I've had about six iPhones, moving from one to the next because of software-enforced planned obsolescence. Every one but the latest has had a cracked screen within a month of purchase -- perhaps because for this one I told myself "this phone is NOT LEAVING THE HOUSE until I have a protective case that fits it and covers the screen". No other physical damage that I recall.

I've generally used one of the cases that looks like an 18th-century leather-bound book. The current one doesn't have a closure, so if I dropped my phone from a great height, the odds are fifty-fifty that it would land with the "book" open, and a further fifty-fifty that it would land on the screen side and it would crack... but that's a 50% improvement over not having the case.
