I didn't know we could do this! On a whim, I thought I'd see if we could post polls using pictures instead of text. (I pasted the html coding from Photobucket.) Feel free to skip, this was only a test. I picked two icons at random.

Ooooh, the possibilities are infinite.

Sorry, I had some trouble posting this. To anyone who voted before the edits... please vote again! :)

Here's an interesting page:

"How are Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and Bilbo related?"
http://thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi?HobbitRelations

It's fun to see everything laid out so succinctly. But you didn't think you'd escape without a quick poll, right?

I'm reading a book with a copyright date of 1988, and the author is referring to personal computers and Compuserve, one of the first online databases. I didn't encounter the internet in any form until about 1996, at my job. (I remember a search engine called Infoseek as the first thing I learned to navigate.) I was 40 years old in 1996, so none of my school experience involved computers. Which brings us to... a poll!

[Poll #1111479]

If you'd like to comment about your first experiences with the internet and the World Wide Web, and what sites you discovered and used first, I'd love to hear it!

I came home to find my little bedroom TV not working,; there was just static and snow where a reality show picture used to be. Oh no! Was the TV kaput? Was it the cable connection to my apartment? The TV in the livingroom was working, so it wasn't the cable company's fault. It had to be the TV, or the actual cable connecting it to the wall. The little TV worked (yay!) in the livingroom, plugged into the livingroom's cable, which meant the TV worked -- but the cable for some reason had burned out, I guess. Aha! I ran to the huge, bulging bag of random cables, wires, and plugs taking up space in a cabinet -- probably 20 years' worth -- pulled out a spare cable, and exchanged it for the burnt-out one. And it worked! Which OF COURSE leads us to our Froday poll...

Small Talk

Why do social events and having to make small-talk wear me out? I just don't have the stamina to sustain it for very long before getting restless. If only people wanted to talk about hobbits, I'd be so energized!

It's hard for me to describe words phonetically. The first choice is like the doctor asking you to say ahhhhhhhhhh (the 'a' in 'father'), and the second choice is when you see a cute puppy and say awwwwwwwwwww (or the word 'or'). And I know this is from a purely American POV, sorry! I'd love to see 'pronunciation' polls from those of you around the world.

I may faint from the shock. I woke up to find that it's actually RAINING. I mean, rain, with water falling from the sky and getting things wet. I know this isn't very thrilling to most of you, but I literally can't remember the last time we got any rain. It may have been... 2006, I kid you not. Boy, do we need it. I may just spend the day doing rainy-day things like sewing, reading, and writing.

Speaking of sewing, since I'm so small I usually have to alter sleeves and hems of anything I buy. How about you?

What do you think about clowns? The only one I was ever scared of was that doll in "Poltergeist" who dragged the little kid under the bed. *shudder*

I just found some fluffy lavender rugs for my bathroom. (They're much darker than they look in the photo, and match things that are out of frame.) No more cold toesies! So naturally, I realized that a poll was in order...

Once again, I'm flabbergasted that something I thought I was pronouncing correctly is apparently dead wrong. First it was Merry, which I pronounce Murray (MUH-ree). Not even my own mother pronounces it like that. Now it's... Elijah! All this time, I've been pronouncing that name with a soft "J", like the 'zs; in Zsa Zsa Gabor. But I just heard Elijah say his own name in a video, and I'm... I'm wrong! *gasp* How about you?

Last night, for a reason that's still a mystery, my laptop starting running soooooooooo slowly. It was taking about 15 minutes just to boot up, and once it did, nothing worked. No matter what I clicked on -- 'my documents', internet icon, ANY icon on my desktop -- nothing happened. I couldn't even shut it down, because that button wouldn't work either. So I forced the computer "off", booted it up again, same thing. I tried this two or three times over the course of an hour, but nothing worked. I wanted to cry! I also wanted to run the virus program, but couldn't get into that, either. Panicked and upset, I drove over to Best Buy to leave my baby with their tech guys for who knew how many weeks??? The guy behind the counter decided to try to boot up the laptop himself so he could see the problem, and.... there was nothing wrong. Everything was now working perfectly! Somehow, on the ride to the store, it had fixed itself, and it's still fixed.

[Poll #1021375]

Have you ever had mysterious computer things happen to you?

*kisses and hugs my baby and murmurs lovingly to it*

I've never seen "Napoleon Dynamite", although I've heard a lot of buzz about it. It's airing on MTV next Saturday at noon.

Over the past few days, I've been re-reading Keith Robertson's "Henry Reed" series of children's books, with Robert McCloskey's adorably simple illustrations. I still have "Henry Reed, Inc.", "Henry Reed's Journey", and "Henry Reed's Babysitting Service", which I probably first read when I was 11 or 12. I have a few other books that I got in the 1960's and still love (and which are falling apart from how many times I've read them over the years).

So naturally... it's poll time!
