Jo and Dean are off doing something - the meeting with Oracle is over, so Rachel couldn't care less. Besides, she already pulled Jo aside and swore to cover her in cockroaches if she leaves the farm and leaves Rachel behind.
There's no way Rachel would ever collect a bucket of cockroaches, even to throw on Jo, but intimidation works well.
Even if her arm is going to bruise from that punch later on.
She'll worry about that later. Right now, she's got hours of waiting to do that can translate into training time. About five miles out from the Cooper farm, she'd morphed Hork-Bajir and done what they do best - cut into a tree. A thick branch, one that could be cut up into five or six thick, short pieces, set up a hundred yards away or so.
The gunshots won't be too audible from the farmhouse, but they're sure as hell audible to Rachel. She manages not to wince with each pull - humans are deaf and she's ignored gun blasts before as a dog, she can certainly do it like this.
Her gun is a six-shooter. Every time she empties, she walks over to inspect the stumps she'd set up, frowns and curses a couple of times, then wanders back to her point to re-load and try again.

It's associated with a pair of glossy black batlike wings, which are attached to the glossy black shoulders of Lucy Cooper.
She sees Rachel and circles to a landing, politely refraining from her usual reckless dives.

Then she slips the gun into her shoulder holster and looks over at Lucy with a very small, slight smile.
"Hey."

Downshift.
"Hey."
Smile!
Nod to gun.
"Learning?"
(The scent of frustration is recognizable in the air.)

The logs are riddled with holes, but not a one of them goes straight through the center of the little X Rachel scratched onto the bark. Not perfect isn't good enough.

Delicate pause.
"Getting better," she repeats, cheekily.

Though she doesn't like having people around while she's jumpy with practice with a gun.
She glances over her shoulder, finds the watcher... and waits, one eyebrow arched.

Cheerful.
"Hi," says Rachel, still holding her gun with both hands.

Rachel tilts her head in the general direction of the farm.
"Straight through the trees. Loaded with people, you can't miss it."

They don't much care about the noise and is happy to sit in their stroller and nap, while Mel leans on the handle and watches.
"Who set the stumps up?" After a while
no subject
But for now, she's jumping and whirling around looking irritated.
And, um... babies.
She's got the gun dropped and pointed straight at the ground within seconds.
"What? Oh- I did." A brow arches, irritated at the question. "Why?"
no subject
"Hey, I'm Mel."

She's still frowning, but only a little because-- babies. And she feels a little bad about still holding the gun. Not enough to drop it, but...
"Rachel."

"So you staying for a while? With the target range and all?"

He thought she could fight.

And if he knew what she was shooting like last week, he'd be damn impressed by what she's doing now.
Turning to reload, Rachel does eventually catch sight of him and frown a little. She doesn't mind Dean, though they've only been alone together for about five minutes, all in all. She gets sick of listening to he and Jo argue with the kind of undertone that makes her uncomfortable after a minute or two or listening to it, but Dean himself?
Annoying, but fine.
...she just doesn't want him watching her suck.
"Problem?" she asks, perfectly casual as she reloads.

It's like offering to help, except where it's actually an order.
no subject
And much as she wants to rebel against the order... she could use some help.
"My grip is fine," Rachel informs him as she comes up and holds up her hands to show him, still holding firmly to the gun - and, very politely, pointing it toward the tree stumps rather than his face. "It's the pull-back when I shoot, it knocks me off my aim."
no subject
"Try holding it looser. Get too tight, you'll fuck yourself right up."
no subject
...and she already knows, without going to check, that she just hit the bullseye.
"Damn," is her soft exhale anyway, holstering the gun and heading over to see just how close she got.
