[community profile] fan_writers is now open for business. It's a multifandom comm for meta about writing. Please post or link your writing theory, tips, techniques, and other writing meta here. As the name suggests, our primary context is fanfiction, but original-fiction writers are also very welcome. We're just here to geek out about writing!

Join, subscribe, say hi on the Introduction post, and comment with Tumblrs, podcasts, Substacks, and any other writing resources you'd recommend on the Resources post. But most of all, post or link to your meta about writing, and join in the discussions. (Or lurk. Lurkers are absolutely welcome, too.)

Hope to see you over at [community profile] fan_writers!

Signalboosting for the WIP Reverse Big Bang - one of the art pieces is SGA.

Not many artists got their stuff in on time so there are only four artworks up for grabs, but they've opened it up so as many writers as want to can claim any one piece. The art thumbnails aren't necessarily the completed works - some will be preliminary drawings or collages from which the final art will be made. The fandoms are Astro, Good Omens, Stargate Atlantis, and The Expanse. The post is definitely still open for claims. Min wordcount is 7500 and schedule and FAQs are here.

You can see the art thumbnails and info here.

Warnings about fanfiction.net disappearing for good have intensified on tumblr. Obviously it's not a problem if the writers later uploaded their works to AO3, but there are some significant writers who never did, often genfic authors from years gone by.
The site's a nightmare to rescue fics from as it has barriers to copy-pasting, and now a captcha barrier to any downloading.

Ways around this that I've found:
- Use a pc and right-click to save the page as an html, which can later be resaved as a text file to get rid of unwanted crap. You lose any italics but at least the fic is saved and can be made into a pdf or ebook (if you prefer to read it that way).
- A better alternative is to see if the fic (often more than one page, if multiple chapters) has already been saved in Wayback. This only works if the Wayback link is fairly old, i.e. precedes the introduction of the captcha barrier. But there often are these an older Wayback links, so I'm making summary documents with a working Wayback link for each fic (where all the chapter links also work), for each author. I hope to be able to upload these as resources to Fanlore, eventually, or maybe squidge.org might archive them.

SGA authors only on ff.net (and mostly) not on AO3 that I'm currently doing this for:
kodiak_bear_country
tipper

Got any other fic-saving tips or tricks?

And can you think of other Stargate writers it'd be good to save/create one of these summary Wayback pages for?

As part of the project to restore the Audiofic Archive, I've gone through all the SGA and SG1 podfics and restored or updated as many as possible of the text links - just about all of them. We're still missing some SG1 ones and a handful of sparky podfics, and there are a small number of fics now available only as podfics, but the vast majority of the Stargate entries in the Archive have been fully restored. They don't all have streaming mp3 links but they do all have download links.

What I want to remind people about is that there are loads of older fics in the Audiofic Archive that were never on AO3, so you may not know them. Browsing the Audiofic Archive is one way to (re)discover many stories, either as podfics or in their text versions, that you might not have read, or that you haven't read for years.

You can use the Advanced Search tab on the Archive to specify not only the fandom, but also pairings, or gen (there's a tag called "info|gen" that can be searched on), not to mention searching based on length, author, and reader. One tip about filling in the Advanced Search fields - as with filling in AO3 fields, for most of them you need to type the relevant word or part of it then hit the drop-down option that you want. That will insert the full, correct tag in the field, which you need as trying to search on a partial tag doesn't work. The exception is the Full Text Search field at the top which is freeform. By the way, if you enter "stream" in that, you'll just get podfics that have streaming mp3 options.

Have fun!  - and now I'm doing the same with due South  :)

Hi all - I'm helping squidgiepdx restore missing podfic files in the audiofic archive, and here are an initial few sga ones that are missing, and which we don't have saved. Let me know if you have any of them saved - either mp3 or m4b is fine, and we can arrange to get a copy from you.

So the current list of "wanted" SGA podfics are:

  • 4g.l17.t2se.b (annex) - written and read by general_jinjur LOCATED
  • Atlantis: I Am Not Yours - by auburn, read by general_jinjur
  • Belonged To Someone Else - by auburn, read by general_jinjur
  • Brothers In Arms - by trinityofone, read by general_jinjur
  • Chambers of the Sea - by trinityofone, read by general_jinjur
  • My Space Adventure - by skoosiepants, read by general_jinjur
  • The USS Indianapolis - by trinityofone, read by general_jinjur
  • Walk A Klick - by trinityofone, read by general_jinjur

TIA if you can help! (There'll be more requests like this as we work our way through)

The McShep Big Bang (MBB) is run from tumblr so I said I'd do a signal-boost here on DW (I'll repeat this in other likely places). Obviously, the main pairing needs to be John and Rodney. Note that the tumblr is best viewed on a PC, not a mobile device, to see all the details.

Schedule:

April 20th: sign-ups due/ sign-ups close
April 30th: pair-ups for complementary works finalized
May 1st: complementary creators can start creating (primary creators may well already have started!)
June 1st: first check in
July 1st: second check in. Pinch hitter sign ups close
July 31st: Everyone is hopefully finished & we start revealing works in the collection

While it's still called a Big Bang, in fact this year it's a low-pressure challenge due to the stresses of 2020. Almost any medium can be used for a primary (or complementary) work (but see the discussion below for details), and there's no lower size limit this year. The most common medium will probably be fic, but vids and new art are also fine, as are newly written podfic. The mod will link up complement creators with primary creators, but if you have a pre-existing team you can say so in the sign-up.

In 2020, 17 Primary and Complementary works were posted to AO3 in the first McShep Big Bang. :)

Sign-up posts via g-docs: (these will work - there may be some problems with the tumblr links in the sign-up posts there)
Primary work sign up

Complementary work sign-up

Pinch hitter sign-up

More details about Primary Works from queries on Tumblr (my reading of the details):
Any medium is okay for primary works, and for fics, as the last year has been tough there's no minimum for the wordcount.

Q: Would a podfic of be considered a primary work if the fic being recorded is a new work?
A: If the work hasn't been publicly revealed at all then the podfic could be a primary work (pretty sure this could be done as a team - one writing the work and the other podficcing it, but check with the mod).

If you're looking to record someone else's fic, you're looking at making a secondary work (if the Primary is in the Big Bang). If the fic is already previously posted publicly elsewhere, then the podfic isn't suitable for the Big Bang.
Similarly, art done as a primary would need to be a new work, not fanart created for a pre-existing posted story.

Overall, if you're unsure whether what you want to do is acceptable as a primary work regarding the medium or size, message the mod @mcshepbigbang on tumblr.

(More details about what a Big Bang is are in the comments, here.)

In the recent Snowflake challenge I mentioned the Gateworld Stargate Atlantis episode transcripts as a resource, and fretted about what would happen if the Gateworld site ever vanished.

So I decided to make sure they were all saved to the Wayback machine, and in the end it didn't take that long. I think someone else had the same idea, as many had already been saved around October 2020. There were a handful unsaved, so I've checked all the episodes and saved those last ones, and have added the links and info to the Fanlore page on Gateworld (and a link to this on the SGA page in Fanlore).

In the course of doing this I discovered that Stargate Wiki also has a set of ep transcripts, here. I linked to two of them on the Fanlore page as, weirdly, two eps in season 1 had no transcripts on Gateworld. So now, hopefully, all episodes of SGA have transcripts linked in Wayback, if we ever need them.

So I was moderating a comment over on SlashWorld, and found out that all of the old SGA Big Bang sites that were on TalkOnCorners.net are gone.  The domain expired and hasn't been brought back.  Some of the stories are available on the Wayback machine, though.

Has anyone made any attempt to rescue these stories and give them new homes?  Or should someone?  I have the resources to do so, if need be.  Thoughts?

Bit of panic in the last 24 hours as Wraithbait's domain expired.

But the site has moved to a new address: http://cathandnick.com/wraithbait/

I've added that link to the Fanlore page and [personal profile] em_kellesvig's looking to see if it can be imported to AO3.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairings(s): Ronon/Woolsey, background McShep
Rating: NC-17
Word count: ~4600
Warnings/Tags: none of the usual / first kiss, first time, poetry,
Disclaimer: Don't own or profit from them

Summary: Woolsey finds out his love of poetry is shared by Ronon, and Ronon shows that it doesn't have to be the only thing they have in common.

Author's notes: This story got started several years back when I learned there's a deleted scene somewhere that mentions Ronon used to write poetry when still living on Sateda. In my head it sounded like poetry could be something he and Woolsey had in common :) When I mentioned having an idea for a Ronon/Woolsey story, esteefee enthusiastically encouraged me to write it, so I wanted to make it happen. Sorry I kept you waiting for this long, hope you enjoy this at least a bit ^_^

Finished for the [community profile] story_works Spring Cleaning challenge. I claim no knowledge of poetry, so to anyone who really does, my apologies. Unbetad, all mistakes are mine.

A New Hope of never getting anything done again! Muwahahahaha!!

I scoured the AO3 SGA/McShep/AU/complete/English search results (from 5/07/19 back to the dawn of time), and that seemed like a good stopping point. Best of all, I found chibis for multiple 'verses!! Gaw-dang, they're even cuter than I remember!

Also, I'm letting you know that I'll be removing the ā€˜+++’ notations in the next update. If you want to read all the new entries from the 3/25/19 cohort now's the time to do it, before they blend into the general awesomeness.

(I may have posted a stealth update without telling anybody, too.) :D

And it's not just 165 stories, let me tell you. For example, one of [personal profile] nagi_schwarz's 17 entries is a 'verse that has 83 entries!

switched to Dreamwidth

dug out of any available corner of the internet with the help of Google, or
sadly noted as being no longer available
