Fandom: Hench, Ask A Manager Blog
Pairings/Characters:
Rating: teen
Length: 2k

Theme: crack taken seriously, superpowers, small fandoms, secret identities, crossovers

Summary: It's hench week at Ask a Manager!

Reccer's Notes: Ask a Manager is an advice column for workplace issues, and Hench is a comic about henchmen. This hilarious story is a series of good advice for both evil henchmen and people who manage evil henchmen, dealing with all sorts of workplace hazards ranging from the aftermath of sex pollen to how to manage someone who is using their evil to annoy their own team and beyond. It's amazing and funny whether you know either canon or not.

As so often happens, I had several things I meant to post about and now they've mostly evaporated.

But I do know my tabs situation is staggering out of control. (Reliably over 1700 for at least the last couple of weeks.) Odds that I'll get to replying to all the posts I've read but opened in a tab to reply to later on...are currently very slim.

I considered signing up, since the due date is September that gives me plenty of time, but between now and then there will be another round of [community profile] smallfandomfest and I plan to sign up for [community profile] wipbigbang again and hope to finish TWO fic this round. So, not signing up, but thought maybe someone on my f-list might be interested.

I hit Walmart while I was downtown. After McD’s, which was freezing again. (If the thermostat is set and no one can touch it to change it, the temperature should be the same inside every single day. Clearly there’s something wrong with the heating system and they’re too cheap to fix it properly. Or replace it. I called the main number and reported it, so we’ll see how long it takes for someone to fix it.)

I visited mom and hit the post office and filled my gas tank on the way home, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. We had spaghetti for supper.

I watched a lot of tv today and did zero reading! I watched the first two eps of Best Medicine, last week’s ep of 9-1-1 to get caught up, and a couple eps of Zoo Tampa.

Temps started out at 37.0(F). It was still sprinkling in the morning and had probably been doing so all night. Almost at the exact moment I pulled into the driveway at ~9:30am, the rain started to turn to snow. It’s weird how you can see it thicken as it hits the windshield until it’s white. I don’t think the temp went up much while I was out, because it had to be going down for the rain to turn to snow. When I left the house a little after 11am it had dropped to 29.7 and kept dropping the rest of the day.

I made the mistake of looking at the forecast for the next two weeks and, day-um!, it is going to get cold again. High’s in the teens and 20s, lows in the single digits. DNW!

mific: (Rodney screwed)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis'
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Elizabeth Weir, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Explicit eventually
Length: ~33,000
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings, mentions of blood
Creator Links: boochicken on LJ
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, First time, Vampires, Action/adventure

Summary: none

Reccer's Notes: Rodney gets turned into a vampire by rogue technology on a mission. This is crack taken seriously as there's no fantasy element, and for the initial part Rodney himself is adamant that vampires don't exist. The story takes this premise and plays it out in a canon setting, with Rodney having to develop coping methods for the downsides - like bursting into flame in sunlight (his super sunblock helps a bit), and accessing a supply of blood. Apart from the blood drinking and risk of immolation (and not having a pulse) he's very much his usual self, and, as ever, even manages to save the day despite these problems. It's a delightful story with lots of plot and action, and a friends to lovers romance with John. Gripping, and very well written!

Finished reading:

On the Beach by Nevil Shute - which has its flaws as a book (it's certainly not scientifically rigorous and the prose is often clumsy), but I was emotionally overcome by the ending. I think even more so because it's such a slow burner, so much about incredibly ordinary people with no real effect on the world living out their last days. You don't get the point of view of politicians or geniuses or movers and shakers, and the one guy from CSIRO you only get his point of view toward the end when he's thinking about how he'll spend his remaining days. Just normal people living in denial, or numbing themselves with alcohol, or deciding to do things they never got to before, or finding ways to fill out their days and trying not to think of all the things they'll never get to do.

Length: 4,700 words podfic is 29min 10s
Creator Links: written by always_a_slut_for_hc
Podfic done by PolynomialPandemic
Theme: Crack Treated Seriously, angst (with a happy ending), crack, fix-it, humour

Summary: The Jedi Council was nervous. The Jedi Council was very, very nervous, so much so that the usual meditation-and-releasing-emotions-into-the-Force shtick had failed and High General Mace Windu had broken out the spotchka.

If anything called for drinks, it was discovering that your whole Order was sitting on a primed thermal detonator - well. More like a million of them.

Reccer's Notes: A bit less Crack-Treated-Seriously and a bit more Serious-Treated-Crackily. Starts out super funny, veers into heartbreaking, and then swings right back to being funny again. I love the attention to detail that makes every single character (and there are a lot) feel unique and in character even if they only get a couple lines. The Clone Commanders chat is also super fun and is a feature I've seen used before but never so well with so many characters.

Theme: Crack Treated Seriously

Summary: In this house we respect the Jedi Order, the Force, and our Very Holy General Kenobi (peace be upon his beard).

Obi-Wan is back on Coruscant. Wary, famished, and deeply not ready for what’s waiting.

He thought the clones would hate him. Instead?
They built shrines.
They quote his sass like scripture.
And someone really needs to stop printing stickers.

Featuring: false sightings, reverent memes, emotional breakdowns, and a commander who never stopped waiting.

Reccer's Notes: A very fun fic which mixes modern media fandom things (e.g. the clones have a kind of Discord chat), a fix-it AU (well...some things are fixed, anyway), and heartfelt feelings platonic and otherwise.

I had a chiropractic appointment and a pedicure this morning. I’d been doing a lot of reds, and last week was a dark purple, but I decided this week to lean into lighter, more spring-like colors. So I went with the periwinkle again, and she did a cute little flower design.

I dropped a book off at the library on my way to visit mom, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I grilled Italian sausage for Pip’s supper, since it was so nice out (relatively speaking *g*).

I started Husband Material, and watched several shows I’d DVR’d: Fixer to Fabulous, House Hunters International, and Secrets of the Zoo. That’s the last of Zoo I have recorded, so it’ll be back to Zoo Tampa now.

You may recall me talking about numbness in my fingertips and the theory that it might be carpal tunnel, even though the braces didn’t help at all AND it’s worse when it’s cold out; today I discovered that Sister S also gets numbness in her hands that is worse when it's cold out. Might mean nothing, but I thought it was interesting.

Temps started out at 41.2(F) and reached 48.9 (that I saw; it may have gone up a degree or two after I left to visit mom, but it was already going down when I got home). Totally unexpected, even though it was supposed to get into the 40s today. There was wind and zero sun, though, so it wasn’t a ~pleasant 48. It started to sprinkle in the afternoon.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing well when I visited her. She’d had some protein drink before I arrived and finished the mac&chs while I was there. She planned to make a root beer float for a late afternoon snack AND have tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich (probably just half of one) for supper. Given how little she eats, I think she’s only going to do one of those things. I wrote out a check for her and stuck it in the mail and brought home laundry to do for her.

She had her first regular visit from the Hospice nurse, so I got to meet her. I stayed in the living room while they sat at the dining room table. I could hear them a bit, but I didn’t want to be right on top of them. Mom got to ask some questions she’d written down, so that was good.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: Tomb of the Golden Bird (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) by Elizabeth Peters and Running Blind (A Jack Reacher Novel) by Lee Child.

What I am Currently Reading: I just finished the last book yesterday so I haven’t started anything yet, but I’m thinking Husband Material (London Calling) by Alexis Hall.

What I Plan to Read Next: Undecided, but I have several to choose from; I have another library book out and a couple on my own shelf, so it’ll be whatever I’m feeling after I finish this one.

Book 3 of 2026: Tomb of the Golden Bird (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) (Elizabeth Peters)

I really enjoyed this book. Though I'm sad that it's the final book that doesn't include jumping back in time. spoilers )

Good story; I'm giving it five hearts. I'm going to miss reading about this family and their adventures. (Though there might be one book that goes back to an earlier time that I might give a try.)

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 4 of 2026: Running Blind (A Jack Reacher Novel) (Lee Child)

Good book. My favorite so far. spoilers )

I enjoyed this book and am giving it five hearts.

I had two ultrasounds this morning so I did not leave the house at my usual time. Since I was home a little longer I finished up the chili and got it back into the fridge. Chili always tastes better the next day, which is why I like to get it started the day before. And I figure having it sit in the fridge before I heat it up again will let the flavors do what flavors do. *fingers crossed*

I hit Agway while I was downtown and picked up my aunt’s death certificates. I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and shaved. I made cornbread to go with the chili. I also browned more ground beef and made spaghetti sauce for later in the week.

I typed in ~4,100 more words on my [community profile] smallfandomfest fic to bring it to a total of ~6,600 words! I even got the fic posted! \o/ I finished this Jack Reacher book and watched a couple eps of Secrets of the Zoo.

My healthy eating fail was planning a ‘cheat’ and having it not be as good as I thought it was going to be. :( Very disappointing that I had something not healthy and I couldn’t even really enjoy it.

Temps started out at 33.1(F) and reached 45.0. It was not supposed to get this warm, so it was a nice surprise. And there might’ve been a little bit of sun, too.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good when I talked to her. My aunt and uncle had visited in the morning, and Sister A was there when I called. Mom says she did not make herself another root beer float today. *g*

I got my final [community profile] smallfandomfest fic done!! I hope you enjoy it. *g*

Title: M is for Murder
Author: Spikedluv
Fandom: Murder, She Wrote (tv)/Mistletoe Murders (tv)
Rating: PG13/Gen(/Het)
Pairing/Characters: Jessica Fletcher & Emily Lane (appearances by Detective Sam Wilner, Violet Wilner, June Hubble, and Ray; implied Emily/Sam pre-relationship)
Length: 6,600 words
Spoilers: Takes place post eps 2.01&.02 of Mistletoe Murders and sometime post-season 8 of Murder, She Wrote.
Summary: Jessica Fletcher agrees to participate in a book event in the aptly named town of Fletcher’s Grove. It’s merely a long weekend, so what could go wrong?
Author’s Notes: This story is brought to you by me finding out that Fletcher's Grove was named for Jessica Fletcher. How could I not write the crossover after that?!! Written for [community profile] smallfandomfest for the prompt: Murder, She Wrote (tv)/Mistletoe Murders (tv), Jessica & Emily, Jessica stumbles upon a mystery while visiting Fletcher's Grove (for reason of creator's choosing).
Feedback: Would be greatly appreciated.
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.

I hit Price Chopper while I was downtown. Later I hit the bank drive-thru, the library to return and pick-up books, and Stewart’s.

I visited mom, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for a walk with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. Supper was ham steak. I browned ground beef and added onions, peppers and seasoning for the start of tomorrow’s chili.

I started the next Jack Reacher book and watched HGTV’s Home Town.

My healthy eating win today was stocking up on healthy snacks at the grocery store: grapes and almonds, bananas, yogurt, and cottage cheese and peaches. I still have some oranges at home, two apples, and one grapefruit.

Temps started out at 25.5(F) and reached 36.5. There was a little bit of sun, which was nice.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing okay when I visited her. She was still in her nightgown, which is always concerning to me. She had some mac&chs AND made herself a root beer float while I was there. She said she had one the other day and it tasted really good. Calories!
