When the past meets the present. 40 metres below Kensal Green Cemetery, our two TBMs constructing the Euston tunnel passed beneath the final resting place of Sir Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Last week, Our Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture team joined HS2 CEO Mark Wild and Katherine McAlpine, Director of the Brunel Museum to unveil a plaque in honour of two of engineering's greatest names. The Brunels pioneered tunnelling methods that have shaped how we build safely underground today.
We've unveiled a plaque 40 metres beneath Kensal Green Cemetery, marking the spot where our #Euston Tunnel passes directly beneath the graves of Sir Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Two tunnel boring machines are currently driving the 4.5-mile Euston Tunnel between Old Oak Common and central #London, passing beneath the cemetery as part of the journey. Our CEO Mark Wild joined Katherine McAlpine, Director of the Brunel Museum, and engineers from Skanska Costain STRABAG to mark the moment and pay tribute to the Brunels, whose pioneering tunnelling methods still shape how we build safely underground today. The tunnel is due to be completed next year, with the boring machines finishing their journey just outside the new HS2 station at Euston. What if buildings didn't just consume energy, but stored and shared it? That's already happening. In Trondheim, Powerhouse Brattørkaia often generates more energy than it consumes – the excess is stored in batteries and charges electric buses serving the neighborhood. In Malmö, our Hyllie Terrass development uses the building's structure as a thermal battery. Excess energy is shared between residential and commercial tenants. The result: potentially up to 75% less energy needed for heating and cooling. I właśnie dlatego z ogromną przyjemnością rozpoczynamy realizację nowej inwestycji, jaką jest budowa domu studenckiego dla Uniwersytet VIZJA w Warszawie. As principal contractor on this important project, working alongside our Alliance partners we’ve repurposed the site’s existing assets and reduced the need for new materials, while extending the operational life of valuable infrastructure. Together we’re delivering a more sustainable approach while maintaining long-term value.
Sometimes the best solution isn't building something new... it's finding a smarter way to make the most of what's already there! That's exactly what's happened at Spilsby Water Recycling Centre in Lincolnshire, where our team are nearing completion of a project that has increased the storm storage capacity by repurposing the site's existing infrastructure. Rather than constructing a new storm tank, two former sludge holding tanks have been successfully converted into operational storm tanks, providing an additional 125m³ of storage and increasing the site's total working storm capacity to the 370m³ required to meet updated environmental standards. Alongside the tank conversion, the project has also delivered new gravity-fed pipework, upgraded overflow arrangements, a gravity return system with actuated valve controls, a new wash-water system and improved access for future operation and maintenance. And by adapting the existing assets instead of building new ones, the scheme has reduced the need for new materials, lowered the embodied carbon & extended the operational life of valuable infrastructure. Truly demonstrating how sustainable thinking can go hand in hand with effective engineering. Zielona transformacja w sercu Warszawy! Jeszcze niedawno ul. Złota w centrum Warszawy była przestrzenią zdominowaną przez ruch samochodowy. Dziś, z ulicy dla samochodów przekształciła się w zieloną przestrzeń dla ludzi. Uroczyste otwarcie, które miało miejsce kilka dni temu, symbolicznie zakończyło proces przywracania tej części miasta mieszkańcom. Wydarzeniu towarzyszyła konferencja prasowa z udziałem Prezydenta Miasta. W ramach inwestycji nadaliśmy ul. Złotej zupełnie nowy charakter. Pojawiły się strefy odpoczynku, elementy małej architektury oraz rozbudowana zieleń. Na samej ul. Złotej posadzono 81 wiązów, a w całym kwartale Złota-Zgoda docelowo pojawi się blisko 200 drzew oraz około 3000 m² nowych terenów zielonych. Zmiany objęły również rozwiązania mniej widoczne na pierwszy rzut oka. Pod powierzchnią ulicy powstały zbiorniki retencyjne magazynujące wodę opadową, która będzie wykorzystywana do podlewania zieleni. Dotychczasowe rozwiązania podporządkowane ruchowi samochodowemu ustąpiły miejsca przestrzeni projektowanej z myślą o ludziach. Efekt? Więcej zieleni w ścisłym centrum Warszawy, lepsze warunki dla pieszych i rowerzystów oraz rozwiązania, które wspierają retencję wody i adaptację miasta do zmian klimatu. Jesteśmy dumni, że możemy realizować projekty, które na nowo definiują sposób korzystania z centrum miasta, łącząc potrzeby mieszkańców, środowiska i nowoczesnej mobilności. 👉 Zobaczcie zdjęcia z oficjalnego otwarcia.
