X-Men #23 - A question answered...
Jan. 24th, 2026 07:57 pmOne thing about the Doug Ramsey/Bei the Blood Moon's relationship has been constant from the start.

Bei's mutant power (or mutant weapon in Arakko terms) is something called the Doom Note which exists within her. It's amplifies her voice to permanently-on-Black-Bolt-like levels of destructive force, meaning she does not speak aloud unless she's TRYING to destroy a mountain.

The Doom Note also allows her to make herself understood in another way, by projecting a sort of psychic voice straight into the minds of other people. However, since it's not actually a language, Doug's powers can't translate it and he remains the only person we've met so far who cannot understand her speech, though she can understand his.
Even his transformation (I won't call it an upgrade) to Revelation didn't fix that

So exactly how they established a LOT of things about their relationship was a rather gray area which was never addressed, except in fanfic.
However, X-Men #23 confirms that they went with the most obvious solution when one of the people can't be understood by the other:

I also like the limitation that she doesn't use it when carrying a weapon, which is a lot of the time, and that they are in synch enough that they'll make the same sort of comment about it.

Very Doug.

They can get by without it for most basic situations (context, experience), but for a heart to heart like this, it helps.
