Olagi: To Change
Jul. 11th, 2023 06:02 pmI hope you don't mind the slightly pretentious title, I'm getting used to titling my writing things that aren't either just character names or unfunny jokes. This is a post about my fictional species called the Olagus (Olagi plural).
To start, I'll be using a character named Ravon to demonstrate certain traits the average Olagus has.

Olagi are generally inspired by real animals somehow. Ravon herself has a rat-like face, a pair of antelope horns, a cat tail, and bird wings and feet. The feathers around her neck and her three fingered hands/paws are mostly random. Really, an Olagus can look like anything, with one rule: eyes.

Ravon's eyes are purple with a slit darker purple pupil. The darker pupil part is what's important: An Olagus' eyes can be any color but the pupils must be a darker shade of that color. Hues can be shifted around a little to make it look better because sometimes a darker shade of yellow just looks gross while shifting it into orange a little makes it prettier. I'm more interested in making these designs look good than following my own rules to the letter.
One of the most important part of the Olagi are their ability to shapeshift. Some basic rules for what exactly they can do with this power:
- The most difficult thing to do is adding or removing limbs. Only the most powerful of shifters can do that.
- Changing the patterns or colors on their skin or fur is only slightly easier than growing or removing limbs.
- Changing eye color is impossible. Changing the shape of the pupils or iris is very possible but changing the colors in any way is a no go.
Olagi shapeshift through breaking and then fusing their bones together, most often in order to look like another species. Shapeshifting is painful, but because Olagi are doing it since such a young age they generally have a very high pain tolerance for it. Olagi are unique for their way of shifting by growing the necessary body parts, as most creatures change's are more magical than biological.
The Olagi's home Olvion, while deeply entwined with Olagus culture, is going to be a different post, but here are some important notes anyway:
- Olagi are taught from a young age to be very secretive towards other species.
- Family is to be held above all else.
- Talking about death is highly taboo. Talking about or openly grieving the dead is seen as almost as bad as murder itself.
If you're wondering more about Ravon herself, she was once an advisor to Great Change Arianwyn during Olvion's civil war, but after Kudjion won and took power, Ravon fled. Thinking her leader dead, she left Olvion entirely and went into hiding with her friend and former bodyguard, Valbit.
Thank you for reading! I hope this was in any way interesting
