Life Goes On
Apr. 22nd, 2021 10:29 amI haven't posted on this journal before, but I have posted on my LJ (same name).
I don't know how many of you know someone who's had covid, but I recently had it. I had no sick contacts that I was aware of. I was in the hospital for eight days, and when I got out I was so weak I could hardly walk, even with my walker. It took about a month and a half to get back to feeling 100% (for me).
This week has been really bad for me, for entirely different reasons. We live in a pretty rural area, and it's not unusual to see wildlife. There's a coyote who wanders around during the summer months. A few years ago we saw a bobcat a couple times during daylight.
My brother takes walks in the woods, so he sees signs of all kinds of wildlife: trees torn up by bears, cougar kills and scat, and once he came face to face with a bobcat with kits.
This week I lost two of my house cats to a cougar. We know this because the next night it showed up at dusk and stayed about 80 feet away looking at the house. My brother checked several times during the night and it was still there until daylight the next day. That was really creepy. We haven't seen any signs in the days since then, but we're still keeping the pets and chickens shut up.
The cats have always stayed in the house at night, but the missing ones didn't come back in the evening, and I was worried about them. It wasn't until we saw the cougar that we realized what happened to them.
I still have an adult cat (who has always stayed near the house when he goes out and also two kittens (nine months old) who haven't been allowed out except in broad daylight.
We've had two other cats we lost in the last ten years. One was found curled up like he was asleep. We don't know what killed him. Another was one that disappeared during the day (like the recent ones). It's not going to stop me from having pets, but we're going to be more careful now.
My grandparents bought this property in 1920, and no one has ever seen a cougar, even when taking a walk in the woods.
