The protagonist, Gwen Foster, is a young therapist treating women in their late teens to early 20s who are unfulfilled sexually or have suffered sexual trauma. Gwen also has her own psychological problems to confront and resolve. She finds herself reluctantly collaborating with a sexual surrogate partner, Caleb Kerner, to save a suicidal client. Gwen and Caleb eventually become romantically involved. Their relationship is deeply impacted by conflict in their professional relationship. The tone is extremely up-close and intimate. Gwen's frank and insightful exchanges with her clients strip away their defenses and denial, revealing the raw emotion deep inside. Despite the sometimes painful subject matter, the series is imbued with hope and an empowering approach to women's mental and emotional health and sense of self-esteem.
