Dietary intake of genistein (Gen) prevents STZ-induced diabetes in mice. Male C57B/6J mice (4 wk old) were fed a control diet (C; STZ) or Gen-supplemented diet (0.25 g/kg diet) for 2 wk before administration of STZ (40 mg/kg body weight for 5 d) and continued on the same diet for 4 wk. The mice in the control group were injected with citrate buffer. Panel A, Nonfasting blood glucose levels were measured before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 wk after STZ administration. Panel B, Body weight gain was measured weekly during the whole period of animal study. Panel C, Plasma insulin levels in fasted mice were measured by ELISA. Panel D, Glucose tolerance was determined. Data are expressed as mean ± se (n = 12 mice). *, P < 0.05 vs. healthy control; #, P < 0.05 vs. STZ-alone-treated mice.
