Title screen

As We Know It is set in a future dystopia, where the surface of the earth is practically unlivable and people are retreating to underground communities. You and your mother have just recently been accepted into one of these communities, and the game is largely about learning to fit into the day to day with a little bit of a crisis showing up to spice things up.

The tl;dr of this one is: The story was alright. Maybe a bit disjointed and linear at times but it was interesting. There's more filler than I would prefer but skipping was easy. The characters were interesting and I liked the LI in the route I took, but I wasn't really feeling it overall.

Description: Otome high school game with a fucked up undercurrent.

Menu screen

In some ways this game is a super typical high school Otome, where you're going through each and every tedious school day between the beginning and the end date, dealing with high school bullshit over and over again. In some ways it goes a little off script, particularly in the beginning, where it gives the player an entire opening music video, and then introduces in quick succession, stalking, some kid stabbing another kid with a fork over you, a single instance of child abuse, a missing person's case, possible homelessness... and then mostly goes back to the boring every day classwork. The tonal weirdness between clicking through actual math lectures and constantly being reminded that there's some girl missing in the neighborhood so don't stay out late or you could get murdered was kind of odd, because in both of the playthroughs I hit there was no real closure on the peripheral weird stuff. In every run at the very end the MC ran into a bloody person on the road, gets a little scared, and then goes home without anyone contacting the police or anything, the end. In another throwaway scene the principal gets too handsy with people and everyone feels gross.  In another run the MC notices some shadowy figure looking up at her room window and this is never mentioned again. There's just a lot of weird serious shit that just sort of happens, and then the game moves on to mean girl stuff and going to basketball games.

Because it appears that some of the elements of the story, maybe the weird dark stuff, and the side stories that all of your girl friends are going through, get no closure and the devs have said that there were sequels planned, Destiny feels almost incomplete. But the romance tracks are all there at least. I don't know how I feel about the whole thing. On the one hand the more out there elements were what kept me interested, but since in four playthroughs none of them ever came to anything, I can't say I was very satisfied in the end.

Menu Screen

I would warn for spoilers in this review but the spoiler is in the title, so I'm not going to bother.

Changeling is an otome game where the MCs is a changeling who doesn't know she's a changeling. She moves with her family back to her old hometown to be closer to an ailing grandfather, and on her second day back at school gets pushed into a magic clubhouse and told she's a "cryptic". It turns out that a large portion of the population in the little town where she grew up are also "cryptics," or supernatural beings of one sort of another. Most are either werewolves, vampires, fae or some sort of wizard/witch. Although the MC's friend immediately realizes that MC is a cryptic of some sort, exactly what sort of cryptic she is is uncertain to the characters through most of the game. The plot mostly revolves around the MC trying and failing to get a clue about herself, while also getting involved to various degrees with the story of the LI you've chosen to pursue.

I'm not really sure what to think about Changeling in the end. I sort of didn't have all that much fun with it, but it's also not significantly flawed outside of the tedium. I think if you want a long play where you can date guys and kind of like the supernatural but more as sprinkles on an otherwise mundane story this could actually be a game that goes down pretty well.

This is the third otome game I've played in the BLM bundle and I'm starting to see a trend. I go in, mildly apprehensive but willing to give the game a shot. Almost immediately a series of small moments is enough to squick me out and I think, ugh, ok, let's just get through this. Then, after playing for a little while those bad impressions tend to fall away, and the game becomes a little more interesting. Seduce Me fit that script closely, but it went a little further and I found myself actually enjoying my time with it once things got going, enough so that I started working towards completion without feeling obligated to do so. And the game is relatively large when you do this, so it's taken me some time to complete and move on from it. I'd say it's one of the largest games that I've played so far, with maybe Dry Drowning and Arcade Spirits beating it.

So while there were flaws with Seduce Me, I had a lot more fun with it than I expected and feel it was one of the better made games in the batch that I've played so far. However, if anyone is interested in purchasing this, a comment on the "Complete Story" itch.io page made note that it's cheaper to purchase each of the individual components separately than to buy the bundle.

I honestly haven't played that many stat building VNs, so I don't have much to compare The Nine Lives of Nim to. Even though there felt like a lot of down time at certain points I kind of liked the exploration involved in trying new jobs or learning new skills, meeting new people, visiting new places, and so on and so forth. And there are ample tracking elements to tell you what you've missed or what you might want to try for. There are dozens of story lines to pursue, and many different endings for Nim, so if you are an exploratory gamer you might find a lot to do here.

Description: A somewhat paint by numbers fantasy otome

Game title

Blue Rose is a straightforward fantasy adventure Otome. The MC, Lena, is a Templar who is wounded when her party is ambushed by a dragon in the forest. She is separated from her group, and after falling off a cliff she wakes up in the hut of a hunter. It turns out that even though she thought the area she was passing through was empty of civilization, there is a little hidden town here full of people who have run away from their countries for one reason or another.

The first part of the game is you recovering and meeting some of the townsfolk. The second half is action heavy, as you try to protect the town from an outside threat.

Art and music wise the game is about as ok as the rest of it. There's nothing particularly bad, and there's nothing that stands out. There are a few small worldbuilding elements that are interesting, but overall the setting feels generic. I think if you are looking for some comfortable, predictable story and have an LI type that you know you like romancing in any situation, you will probably still find a run of Blue Rose entertaining, but it ended up failing to elicit in me any emotion.

Title screen

Animal lover is an otome game, so F/M, where 6 guys have been cursed by a witch, and the MC is the only person who seems to be able to temporarily turn them back by kissing them.  You run around the first part of the game trying to find as many animals who are actually guys that you can, and then the latter part is figuring out how to permanently undo the curse and keep them human forever. Each guy was cursed at a different time. The eldest is Edmund, who is an actual prince from many hundreds of years ago. The rest of them come from America in the 20th and 21st centuries, including a guy from the 50s, 80s, 90s, and then one from very recently. They all have stories and personalities that are tied to those times, which is a neat way to provide variety.

I would say that this was a firmly OK game. It doesn't do anything particularly badly, but it also doesn't take too much advantage of a VN's strengths. Playing it was also a little weird, because Aadara's argument for why the LIs should be cursed to live out an eternity as hamsters and ferrets was pretty strong. If you romance a guy he is able to express real remorse for his behavior, but it still feels kind of weird to be okay with them after having only known them for a little while. Did any of these guys really learn their lesson? The game ends before I'm able to say.

Rating: PG-13
Pairing: F/M and F/F side plots, with M/M between NPCs
Description: A magepunk detective game with simple mystery but complicated characters

title screen

While this game has some superficial elements of point and click adventures, it is primarily still a choice-based game and its core is pretty solidly that of a VN. There's a small point and click layer where you do some inventory management, and move your sprite around on a limited side scrolling map, but these things really could have been removed without there being much of a change beyond saving a little time watching your character move back and forth.

The setting is a magicpunk fantasy Eastern Europe. Humans have started using technology to manipulate the fey, and their neighbors, the long-lived Leshin are not happy about this at all. They start a war, which rages for about a generation, and then the Leshin go a little too far and explode an entire human city by blowing up a fey reactor. This act results in more moderate Leshin rebelling against the extremists who were running the show, and eventually we have an armistice and a peace. The game starts shortly after that peace. The main character, Sofya, was present at the Immolation and has ended up with some unique powers as an after effect of the explosion, which she keeps hidden. She works as a private eye, and is approached by a Leshin woman who insists that her son, who was reported dead, must actually be alive, and wants to pay to have him found. The game then revolves mostly about trying to find this missing Leshin, to determine if he's alive or dead, and just generally what happened to him.

A final note: the game is advertised as Episode 1. This is typically cause for concern, but the overall plot here is finished. There are a few hooks for future games (and there is a sequel already out) and a bit of a cliffhanger coda after the final credits, but overall you can play this game without being worried that it will end at an unsatisfying time.

Arcade Spirits is a professional and polished game, which is a rarity in these reviews. Tl;dr it's a great little VN, with good writing and very nice art, a personable cast of characters, great mood-setting music, and a decent system that both helps you control the plot but also lets you make choices without feeling that you are obligated to say one thing or another to get the ending you are seeking. The length of the game is also decent. I thought it was going to be the end twice before it actually was. Retail cost of Arcade Spirits is $20. That is always going to feel a little steep for me when it comes to VNs, but this is because I am cheap, not because the game doesn't deserve it, and I think in this case the game is definitely worth that if you are a VN fan.

So all in all I'd say this is a successful VN. It's nice to play something that does have some straight forward romance elements but also has an interesting Gen story, something where the characters are easy on the eyes and emotionally engaging, and all of the bells and whistles are operating as intended. The renpy engine is taken full advantage of, with some new game plus elements thrown in too, and it's clear the game was made with love.

This is actually the first Otome game I've ever played in my life. I'm pretty strictly an M/M kinda guy and am not just disinterested but actively turned off by the prospect of playing a girl in a romance game, but since I gave myself a challenge of playing every game labeled "Visual Novel" in the itch.io BLM bundle and this was next on the list I girded my loins and installed it. From the very beginning I wasn't sure if I was actually going to finish it, because the themes felt tailor made to make me hate it, but after getting through it my opinion has mellowed out some.

Final judgement is that the execution is professional and there are no surprises in terms of the mechanics or systems, but the writing is definitely not for me. The only character I ended up liking was the MC, who was hardworking, got shit she didn't deserve, and should have had a better ending.
