Well-being and Meaning in Life -The Threshold Account-.Dong-Yong Choi - 2025 - The Catholic Philosophy 44:253-279.
Bradley argues that well-being and meaning in life may not be distinct, drawing on the same-list argument, according to which the two domains share an identical list of goods. Against this view, this paper argues that the two domains are distinct. In particular, it highlights the following asymmetry: posthumous events cannot transform a life that was bad for the person who lived it into a good life in terms of well-being, but they can transform a meaningless life into a meaningful (...)

Vulnerability, Dialogue, and the Limits of Autonomy.Marina McCoy - 2025 - In Platonic autonomy: self-determination, unity, and cooperation. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
this picture of the power of autonomy needs to be somewhat qualified with attention to another side of Socratic reasoning, which are its dialogical and conversational aspects. My focus here will be on only one aspect of autonomy: the self-sufficiency of reason and the idea that one’s reasons are ‘one’s own’, such that the autonomous soul is also an autonomous thinker. My argument will be to lay out the ways that selfsufficiency and solitude are not the only aspects of genuine (...)

Wounded Heroes: Vulnerability as a Virtue in Ancient Greek Literature and Philosophy.Marina Berzins McCoy - 2013 - Oxford, GB: Oxford University Press.
McCoy examines how Greek epic, tragedy, and philosophy offer important insights into the nature of human vulnerability, especially how Greek thought extols the recognition and proper acceptance of vulnerability. Beginning with the literary works of Homer and Sophocles, she also expands her analysis to the philosophical works of Plato and Aristotle.

Reflexive Performativity and Three Problems for 'Values in Science'.Jakob Ortmann & Kevin C. Elliott - forthcoming - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science.
Despite the breadth of the literature on ‘values in science’, it has paid little explicit attention to the phenomenon of ‘reflexive performativity’. A scientific assertion is reflexively performative when its downstream consequences affect the assertion’s referents in a way that bears on the assertion’s veracity. Famous examples include so-called ‘self-fulfilling prophecies’ in social sciences, or ‘looping effects’. We show how attention to reflexive performativity generates conceptual problems as well as potential improvements for at least three key issues in the literature: (...)

Is Confucian Theism Unreasonable? Responding to an Objection about ‘Transcendence’.James Dominic Rooney - forthcoming - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy.
Several contemporary interpreters of Confucianism allege that there is no good possibility of reconciling theism, and specifically Christian doctrines, with traditional Confucianism. This paper focuses on responding to one objection that arises frequently. The basic shape of the objection alleges that classically theistic and Confucian perspectives on the God-world relation are irreconcilable, usually by appeal to purported facts that (for instance) God is 'transcendent' whereas Confucian Tian is 'immanent.' Implications are drawn from this basic difference, alleging for instance that Christianity's (...)

Algorithmic Bioethics: A Defense and Demonstration.Shang Long Yeo, Sebastian Porsdam Mann, Brian D. Earp & Julian Savulescu - forthcoming - Bioethics.
In this paper, we argue for the adoption of algorithmic bioethics, which uses algorithms, in the form of decision trees, to articulate, understand, apply, and evaluate bioethical arguments. Algorithms bring many benefits to the study of bioethics: they clearly, precisely, and transparently articulate the decision procedure and facts relevant to an ethical decision; furthermore, they can be used to systematically discover, map out, and compare different ethical decision procedures concerning a practical issue. We then also outline and tackle potential limitations (...)

This paper develops a unified interpretation of two central themes in Wittgenstein’s later philosophy: aspect perception and family resemblance. While these topics are usually treated separately, I argue that they are intimately connected. More specifically, I propose that Wittgenstein’s account of aspect perception provides the key to understanding family resemblance. Aspect perception reveals a distinctive form of cognition – an immediate grasp of internal relations – which also underlies the use of family resemblance concepts. On this basis, family resemblance can (...)

Max Born gave quantum mechanics its name in 1924, carried infinite matrices and then operators into Heisenberg's algebra in 1925–1926, gave the wave function its probabilistic reading in the summer of 1926, and in 1927 signed, with Heisenberg, a report that called the theory complete. The results of these steps are well known; his own part in them, and the point in his record at which the confusion begins, are the subject of this paper. Part I compiles his publications and (...)

The Philosophy of Belonging and Eight Fundamental Philosophical Problems: Individuality, Freedom, Meaning, Ethics, Power, Pluralism, Knowledge, and Change.Carlos Federico Obregon Diaz - manuscript
This article examines eight fundamental philosophical problems through the Philosophy of Belonging: individuality, freedom, meaning, ethics, power, pluralism, knowledge, and change. -/- The central proposition, Being is Belonging, maintains that existence is constituted through organized relationships without eliminating the differentiation of participating entities. Three ontological principles structure the argument: the stratification of material, biological, and institutional-human reality; imperfect belonging; and dual temporality. -/- The article argues that relational constitution need not eliminate individuality, that socially developed agency is compatible with effective (...)

What would it mean to make a mind deliberately, rather than merely construct an increasingly capable intelligent system? This book examines the conceptual and experimental foundations of engineered mind formation. It distinguishes task competence, apparent agency, andpersuasive self-description from the more demanding questions of developmental continuity, individuated history, world-directed activity, and possible interests. Rather than presuming that present systems are conscious or that consciousness is impossible in engineered substrates, iit adopts a theory-sensitive, comparative approach to candidate minds. -/- The inquiry (...)

How should we target wealth inequality?Tsung-Hsing Ho - 2026 - Review of Social Economy.
While rising wealth inequality has prompted calls for taxes on net wealth, I argue that egalitarians should focus on the purchasing-power that wealth provides. Wealth is a flawed proxy for purchasing power because government policy and market sentiment create volatile asset prices, detaching them from the intrinsic, income-generating value. This volatility turns a wealth tax into a double-edged sword, because a tax based on a temporary, inflated asset value can be financially ruinous when that value disappears. Egalitarians may therefore continue (...)

This paper defends abstract creationism about social groups, according to which social groups, such as the rock band Oasis and the football club Real Madrid, are abstract artifacts with no material parts. I first present two features of social groups that motivate abstract creationism: the possibility of mutual group membership and of memberless social groups. I then argue that abstract creationism provides the best explanation of these and other key features of social groups and defend it against objections concerning the (...)

There are *prima facie* reasons to think that the ‘necessity’ in the title and topic of *Naming and Necessity*—what Kripke calls ‘necessity *tout court*’—is supposed to be maximally stringent, in the sense that whenever it is necessary *tout court* that something is the case, it is also necessary in every other way that it is the case. This article addresses this tension by bringing together the philosophical literature on the role of habit in aesthetic experience and recent psychological evidence on the role of repeated exposure, familiarity, and fluency in aesthetic appreciation. We begin by reviewing evidence commonly taken to support the view that (...)

Peterson, Largent, and Karlawish argue that dementia caregiving is best understood through the extension of mind, self, and personhood, with the person living with dementia and their caregiver forming a single dyad that holds “supported agency.” In this commentary, we agree that relational approaches correct the common view of dementia as a simple loss of agency, but argue that the extended-mind metaphor leaves room for caregiver domination and pushes toward substituting the caregiver’s decisions for the patient’s too often or too (...)

It is widely held that my singular first-personal normative judgments of the form ‘I ought to φ’ rationally commit me to an intention to φ. In contrast, the relationship between our plural first-personal normative judgments of the form ‘We ought to J’ and our intentions remains undertheorized. This paper probes that relationship. I argue that our plural first-personal ‘ought’ judgments do not rationally commit us to corresponding intentions. But it is a mistake to conclude on this basis that they are (...)

Concepts of Divinity in Underrepresented Religious Traditions: Towards a Cross-Cultural Philosophy of the Divine.Ricardo Sousa Silvestre, Alan Herbert & Purushottama Bilimoria - forthcoming - Sophia.
Contemporary philosophy of religion has been shaped predominantly by Abrahamic conceptions of God, leaving many concepts of divinity from other religious traditions comparatively underexplored. This paper argues that engaging philosophically with these underrepresented conceptions can do more than broaden the range of traditions considered: it can also challenge, refine, and expand the conceptual frameworks through which divinity is investigated. To articulate this possibility, we distinguish three complementary approaches to the cross-cultural study of divinity. Conceptual application employs established philosophical categories to (...)

This chapter offers a philosophical reconstruction of A. C. Drawing on an energy-based (śakti) ontology, it examines how the material world and individual selves are ontologically grounded in God while remaining distinct from Him. This article argues that Jean Baudrillard’s theory of qualities in Les Stratégies fatales can be clarified through a Schellingian interpretative key. Reconsidering Graham Harman’s object-oriented reading of Baudrillard, the paper addresses three related problems: the meaning of seduction as a “passage to a higher level,” the status of absence in Baudrillard’s anti-dialectical logic, and the nature of his theory of qualities. These issues converge in a single theoretical problem structured by intensification, redoubling, and qualified identity. First, Baudrillard’s use of Steigerung (...)

Initially, it is diagnosed that the stalemate stems from a theoretical assumption regarding the nature of hinges and a methodological assumption regarding how hinges ought to be investigated. Specifically, it is assumed in the literature about hinges that the features of hinges display a theoretical unity to be explained by one global theory. Subsequently, it is shown that by questioning both assumptions it (...)

Do large language models (LLMs) have beliefs? I argue that they do, but that their beliefs represent a degenerate case of the phenomenon. The argument turns on Devin Curry’s distinction between the attitude of belief and the intrinsic cognitive state of belief. Focusing exclusively on the attitude, construed here as a behavioral phenomenon, I argue that ascribing beliefs to language models offers greater predictive utility than alternative methods of predicting their outputs, and that this predictive success licenses a form of (...)

This note proves that the system described in Appendix 2 of that paper, when supplemented with standard rules of classical logic, is inconsistent. This paper argues that, although radical realist ideology critique has persuasively shown how ethical norms can function as vehicles of ideological legitimation, its account of belief formation remains incomplete. It is not enough to acknowledge that the public circulation of a norm, or outward conformity to it, does not entail belief. Radical realism must also explain how we can determine whether a power-shaped norm has actually been taken up by agents as a reason for accepting or maintaining a particular belief. (...)

Pausanias’ speech makes clear that the social scripts surrounding pederasty assume that wisdom is something the lover contains and gives to the beloved in exchange for sexual favors. Political life in many contemporary democracies is marked by the persistence of seemingly implausible political claims, often confidently asserted and defended by their proponents as evidentially grounded. Standard approaches in political epistemology typically respond to such cases by denying that these attitudes are genuine beliefs, or by arguing that, whatever their psychological status, they are not governed by epistemic norms. This paper develops an alternative framework. I propose two desiderata for an adequate account of outlandish political attitudes: first, that at (...)

Its six units integrate the foundations of psychiatric nursing, psychobiological explanations of behavior, therapeutic models, psychiatric disorders, the nursing process, and the therapeutic nurse–client relationship. Psychoanalytic, psychosocial, interpersonal, and cognitive perspectives provide complementary frameworks (...)

Is There a Need for a New Preservation? The Philosophy and Politics of Wilderness Today.Arthur R. Obst - forthcoming - Ethics, Policy and Environment.
I present a philosophical account of wilderness called ‘Wilderness for Wildness’ (WfW). WfW makes two claims: wilderness is an area of relatively high wildness, and wilderness is valuable for its relatively high wildness. I motivate WfW by offering a crisp definition of wildness and arguing that the historical wilderness preservation movement celebrated this quality. I then demonstrate WfW’s resilience to common wilderness criticisms. In upshot, adapting preservation for today is needed to evaluate humanity’s appropriate ecological role in a planet of (...)

Imam Abu Hanifah: Master of Qiyās is a scholarly work on the life, methodology, and legal legacy of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (699–767 CE), the founder of the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence. The book examines his role in the systematisation of Islamic law, with particular emphasis on qiyās (analogical reasoning) as a disciplined juristic tool grounded in revelation rather than personal opinion. The work situates Imām Abū Ḥanīfah within the intellectual and political context of second-century Kūfa, a period marked by (...)

In his Philosophy of Right, Hegel describes a set of practices, according to which women fulfill their "vocation" by working to sustain their family, whereas men work in civil society and the state. This paper examines how Hegel attempts to justify this gendered division of labor. In particular, I argue that Hegel takes the gendered division of labor to be a species of a division of mediating labor, according to which it is part of some people's job to represent one (...)

Ruth Millikan characterizes her account of truth as a pictorial theory inspired by Tractarian ideas of mapping and isomorphism. Given the well-known difficulties facing pictorial accounts of sentential truth, this characterization is puzzling. I argue that Millikan’s account is best developed without requiring relations of structural resemblance between sentences and reality. Focusing on her notion of semantic mapping functions and her later distinction between projected and substitutional correspondence, I suggest that the relations relevant to sentential truth are best characterized in (...)

This paper outlines a rigorous epistemological framework termed 'Axiomatic Praxis,' which cleanly separates intellectual understanding from the transactional state of passive belief. Drawing upon the strict parameters of infallibilism, it asserts that knowledge demands the complete and absolute absence of doubt. Consequently, unobserved physical phenomena possess only mathematical probability, directly mirroring David Hume’s problem of induction. This philosophical position finds explicit quantitative validation in quantum mechanics—specifically through the observer effect, Wheeler’s delayed-choice experiment, and Wigner’s friend tests—proving that the material universe (...)

While philosophy of psychiatry has emerged as a well-established academic field with dedicated journals, professional organisations, and substantial scholarly output, no equivalent “philosophy of neurology” field exists despite neurology’s comparable conceptual complexity. This paper examines why this disparity exists and proposes several potential avenues for developing a field focused on philosophical inquiry in neurology focused on outstanding clinical problems, namely: phenomenology of neurological disorders; ontological analysis of neurological categories; understanding alterations to volition, intention, and agency, and the relationship between changes (...)

Ethical consequentialists often apply a strict level separation between the normative status of practical inquiries and the normative status of the intentions they produce. This paper has two aims. The first is to formulate and defend a generalized version of level separation that expands its ambitions from ethics into epistemology. The second is to use this generalized account of level separation to shed light on both traditional and recent questions within epistemology. The result is an expanded account of level separation (...)

When I asked Anthropic's popular AI model, Claude, whether or not it is conscious, it hedged. It said it didn't know whether it is conscious or not, but suggested it might be. I found this answer troubling, because it can lead to confusion over the status of AI, which in turn can impede our ability to deal with this powerful new technology responsibly. I challenged Claude. What followed was a rather extensive debate concerning the nature of meaning and its relationship (...)

This essay articulates the role of racist disrespect in the exploitation of laborers. It begins by distinguishing the concepts of slavery, wage slavery, and a postbellum “second slavery” to show that slavery and a postbellum “second slavery” share a normative core. In both social systems, Black and nonwhite laborers have insecure basic legal protections and labor rights. It proposes that this sort of precarious legal standing not only makes some laborers more vulnerable to direct and violent coercion in the workplace, (...)

We agree with Pozzi et al. (2026) regarding their assessment of three approaches for resolving disagreements between human clinicians and AI systems. Indeed, disagreements in medical decision-making, involving AI or not, are a feature of medical practice (rather than a bug), and those disagreements can be epistemically valuable. However, we aim to advance their argument by offering two recommendations for nurturing the conditions of possibility for productive clinician-AI disagreement in medicine, emerging from the premise that disagreement, while epistemically valuable, can (...)

John Hawthorne and Maria Lasonen-Aarnio (2021) have recently argued that PC should be rejected because it has implications that are contrary to Bayesian reasoning. In favourable cases, a plausible 'proportion' principle for extracting predictions from finite-population hypotheses can be generalized naturally to infinite worlds, by taking spatiotemporal limits. We identify several general approaches to such hard cases, and defend a 'compromising' approach, on which rational priors are weighted averages of (...)

Truths emerge through Ideas whose infinite and unconstructible character allows them to exceed the established order. Their effects become visible in the works they inspire, and their eventual realization promises a transformation of human (...)

Aristotle, Augustine, and Ibn 'Arabi provide early perspectives on motion, temporality, consciousness, and continual manifestation; Newton, Leibniz, and Kant then formulate the central alternatives of absolute structure, relational order, and transcendental condition. Its epistemic version holds that epistemic normativity, including epistemic reasons, is grounded in our epistemic capacities. This paper clarifies the distinctive nature of epistemic capacities by contrasting them with capacities in sports, arts, and games. Nevertheless, Alfārābī made extensive references to Plato within the context of political philosophy, employing him systematically, and composed an independent treatise on the philosopher's thought in which he evaluated all of Plato's dialogues within an original and unconventional ordering. This study argues that this paradoxical situation points (...)

Can you think like a computer? A critique of artificial“consciousness”.Alexandros Schismenos - 2026 - Knowledge Commons.
This paper argues that the central problem posed by contemporary artificial intelligence is not whether computational systems can reproduce the observable functions of human cognition, but whether their expanding integration into social institutions encourages a reduction of human judgment, creativity, and collective autonomy to measurable and optimizable processes. I address Geoffrey Hinton’s assertion that AI models can obtain consciousness as a starting point for a further investigation of digital barbarism, the trend to imaginatively personify digital applications. Drawing on Thomas Nagel's (...)

Active Metamaterial Boundary Control in the MANTA Warp Architecture: Theoretical Foundations, Soliton Kinematics, Boundary Matching, and High-Velocity Energy-Condition Compliance.Nicholas Meyler - manuscript
We present the definitive theoretical and mathematical foundation for the Multi-Axis Non-holonomic Toroidal Actuation (MANTA) subluminal warp architecture. Historically, physical implementations of spacetime warp metrics have been dismissed due to two inter-related failure modes: (i) spatial volume integrals of the Eulerian energy density yielding astronomical values on the order of 10⁴⁴ J, and (ii) automated observer-independent audits identifying ubiquitous Hawking-Ellis Type IV stress-energy singularities and boosted-frame Null and Weak Energy Condition violations. We prove that both failures are artifacts of evaluating (...)

Contemporary constructions of Process Buddhism, while laudable for their attempted integration of Process Philosophy and Buddhism, are motivated by problematic assertions and assumptions about Buddhism. These assumptions apply to Buddhist philosophy broadly, to historical traditions such as Madhyamaka "Middle Way" Buddhism, as well as to specific systems, particularly those of Shentong "Other-Emptiness" schools associated with the Jonang, Kagyü, Nyingma, and Sakya traditions. I challenge several such assertions, including the claim that Shentong's descriptions of ultimate reality are absolutist, hence refuted by (...)

How is the dispute between logical monism and logical pluralism best understood? A number of construals of the debate are considered, and problems are raised. Questions that centrally come up concern what it is for there to be different logics and what it is for a logic to be “correct”. The kind of logical pluralist thesis that is discussed most extensively is one according to which given some especially significant purpose of logic, several logics are correct relative to that purpose. Efforts to address citizenship entail defining, elucidating and defending the rights, roles and responsibilities of persons who share a political culture. The discussion encompasses the political rhetoric of freedom and equality on one hand, and decency and social cooperation on the other. Citizenship describes articulated dispositions, entitlements and actions dictated by governments and constitutions, where cultural, political and religious differences find common ground. Its virtues remain ideals. Some states manage better than others to deliver on these ideals, while others champion (...)

I offer a formal ontological theory where the basic building blocks of the world are timeless events. The composition of events results in processes. Spacetime emerges as the system of all events. Things are construed as bundles of processes. I maintain that such a view is in accord with General Relativity and offers interesting prospects for the foundations of classical and quantum gravity.

In this unpublished paper from 1997, I argue that the cultural context in which Jonathan Edwards operated becomes supremely important if one is to understand what motivated him to defend the particular ideas that he did. His intellectual world was preponderantly Puritan Calvinist. Notions of "covenant" overshadowed the New England religion that conceived of a peculiar pact between God and the "elect." Christians, then, had an obligation to live up to their end of the arrangement. However, Puritan theology was not (...)

People sometimes attempt to avoid blame with the following excuse: “I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong; I was just doing my job.” I argue that this excuse points towards a distinctive form of genuinely exculpatory ignorance. Complying with social role norms involves following deliberative norms that can explain agents’ claims of ignorance and mitigate their blameworthiness. My account of this experience makes a surprising contribution to the debate over when ignorance excuses. If we accept that nonculpable moral ignorance (...)

For decades, discussions about the evolution of species overlooked microorganisms. Over a century ago, Neisser and Massini isolated a coliform bacterium that appeared to acquire mutations adapting it to its environment, naming it Bacterium coli mutabile to reflect this feature. With the advent of molecular biology, these widely debated experiments were subsequently forgotten. Here, we present the history of an experiment that reproduces their observations in a modern context where it has become possible to identify the nature of these mutations (...)

The impact of this encounter was significant enough for philosophical reflection to mark the beginning of a new period with its own distinctive traits. We can identify two landmarks in this new period: (1) the recontextualization of Greek philosophy by Jewish and Christian scholars, who contributed important perspectives from their monotheistic faith and Sacred Scriptures, and (...)

The Arrow of Time as a Theorem: Transforming the Second Law of Thermodynamics from Law to Theorem on Reversible Dynamics.Mohammad F. Islam - manuscript
Since Loschmidt the arrow of time has posed one question: how can microscopic dynamics that run equally well backwards produce a law that runs one way? The Second Law of Thermodynamics has stood as a law, not a theorem, because every derivation from reversible mechanics needed a premise to close that gap. This paper transforms it into a theorem. Take any finite state space and let the microscopic dynamics be any permutation of it: reversible, information-preserving, Liouville’s theorem in finite form. (...)

Ecological coexistence in future urban design concerns infrastructures whose operation transforms heterogeneous ecological, economic, and social relations over space and time. Such transformations generate benefits and burdens through coupled systems that remain only partially observable, while the choice to develop, relocate, or avoid an infrastructure each creates distinct generative consequences. This paper develops a preliminary relational account of responsive field design, connecting plural value circulation with the material dynamics through which urban systems are exposed to disturbances and can be altered. Although I remain unconvinced that the evidence decisively favors either theism or atheism, I’ve come to see the beauty and desirability of Christianity as important reasons for sustaining (...)

This essay reads Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" (2011) through the lens of Nietzsche's three metamorphoses and Gramsci's theory of hegemony. The song is widely received as a Nietzschean text — a celebration of the death of God, the Übermensch, and the creation of new values. I argue that this reception is mistaken. The song is stuck at the lion stage: it performs the negation of theological authority but cannot create values. The "new religion" it announces (...)

This paper examines Socrates’ refutation of Protagoras’s view of knowledge in the Theaetetus (151e–186e). I show that the argument against Protagoras is not intended to be a purely abstract one about inconsistent premises. Instead, Socrates’ success in argumentagainst Protagoras depends upon Theaetetus’s character and his beliefs about knowledge and expertise. I also explore how understanding that section of the dialogue in this way better exhibits Socrates’ description of himself as akin to a midwife. Plato affirms a notion of the “rational” (...)

Why is knowledge of ignorance good?Marina McCoy - 2018 - In Knowledge and Ignorance of Self in Platonic Philosophy. New York, USA: Cambridge University Press.
I argue that knowledge of one's own ignorance is, for Socrates, valuable for two reasons. One reason is that it is an epistemic virtue by which one can progress in understanding after experiencing aporia. Another reason is that it is a practical virtue that allows one to live more ethically. Knowledge of one's own ignorance is not merely about propositional content, but is also an existential and affective understanding of oneself and others as limited.

Three prohibitions follow, one for each property (A2): no assertion without its presuppositions, since a value holds only relative to its anchors; no bare-value read-out, since a value is constituted by its arrangement and carries its index; and no refinement of local values into a global ontology without new evidence. Imaginative resistance refers to the difficulty readers experience when attempting to imagine fictional worlds in which propositions that contradict their moral convictions are presented as true. While existing accounts have explained this phenomenon in terms of the cognitive architecture of imagination, the relationship between higher-order evaluative claims and descriptive facts, or the reader’s unwillingness to adopt certain perspectives, this paper proposes an alternative explanation grounded in moral psychology.

It proposes that Meaning does not originate with language, consciousness, perception, or biological interpretation. Rather, physical existence is already meaningful in a minimal ontological sense insofar as every physically existing entity is determinately constituted through properties and relations and exists within lawfully constrained possibilities. ICDP distinguishes Constitutive Meaning, concerning what an entity physically is, from Lawful Meaning, concerning the states, relations, interactions, and transformations physically available to it. In answering the conceptual question, I develop a critical taxonomy of existing conceptions—character-based, risk-based, and hybrid—and show that they are found wanting. I then offer an account of dangerousness-as-domination, arguing that dangerousness is a condition of standing in a relation of power over victims to interfere with impunity and at will (...)

    Wittgenstein è un naturalista?Claudia Cavaliere - 2026 - Rivista Italiana di Filosofia del Linguaggio 20 (1):141-153.
One recurring framework for interpreting the relationship between nature and culture in Wittgenstein's philosophy is that of so-called "liberal naturalism." Proponents of this reading point to the naturalistic undertones of several key concepts from his later work — "language game," "form of life," "facts of nature," "natural history," and so on — arguing that these concepts situate human practice in continuity with our biology, thereby reflecting the deep entanglement of the natural and the symbolic-cultural dimensions that characterizes human life. In (...)

This essay provides a critical engagement with Talia Bettcher's Beyond Personhood: An Essay in Trans Philosophy (2025) on the topic of space in relation to Bettcher's concept of interpersonal spatiality and her method of groundbound philosophy. First, we reconstruct Bettcher’s argument with a focus on her understanding of philosophy as a relational and interpersonal practice, bringing together her concepts of groundbound philosophy, interpersonal objects, reality enforcement, realization, and worlds. We then attempt to locate space within her framework, arguing that her (...)

    Am I a Christian.Nedko Water - manuscript
This text asks the question “Am I a Christian?” from the standpoint of the epekimnesis of water. It does not treat the question as a census item, a creedal subtraction test, or a cultural inheritance. It treats it as a first-person instability produced when biotic memory is recognized as an abiotic tracing hosted, for a short interval, in a living shell. Drawing on speculative realism and on the distinction between causal human recollection and water’s acausal, indifferent tracing, the text argues (...)

From Nāgārjuna’s Fourfold Analysis of Causation to Structural- Agency Justice: A Relational Account of Inequality and Human Agency.Kapil Kamble - manuscript
This article investigates whether Nāgārjuna’s critique of intrinsic causal production can inform a contemporary account of the social production of inequality. The four alternatives of production—from self, from other, from both, and from neither—are examined as a critique of causes and effects conceived as self-sufficient entities, not as competing empirical models from which Madhyamaka selects a winner. The article then develops an explicitly independent, contemporary condition–configuration–outcome heuristic for tracing how historically inherited material, institutional, cultural, and relational conditions interact, generate outcomes, (...)

Their proponents tend to project their own needs, concerns, and ideals (...)

Scientific investigation has become increasingly capable of identifying how physical systems change, stabilize, interact, and transition between different states of organization. Yet the relationships between organizational development, temporal order, emergent constraints, reciprocal subsystem evolution, and the formation of persistent physical structures remain distributed across different scientific fields. Generative Continuum Ontology (GCO) provides an ontological framework within which these phenomena can be investigated as related expressions of organized existence. This paper develops a research program for translating GCO's organizational architecture into experimentally (...)

Theory Generation as Constraint-Governed Covering, Refinement, and Local-Global Compatibility.Sulin Zhang - manuscript
This paper proposes a framework for understanding theoretical plurality across disciplines by modeling a theory not primarily as a set of propositions, but as a covering structure on a high-dimensional, irregular explanatory domain. The central claim is that a theory is generated through a choice of coarse explanatory cover, and subsequently developed by refinement under constraints. The key scientific-philosophical question is not only how a theory is refined once it exists, but which theories can exist at all: that is, the (...)

Mathematics plays different epistemic roles in pure mathematical research, problem-oriented mathematical modeling, and scientific modeling. Although these activities frequently share mathematical methods, they differ in how mathematical results acquire significance, how research objectives constrain mathematical inquiry, and how new questions emerge. This paper develops an account of scientific modeling as a form of semantically anchored mathematical exploration. Its central argument is that a mathematical model, once connected to a scientific phenomenon through an interpretative and inferential relationship, acquires a dual status: (...)

Complexity science explains how organization emerges from local interactions and how emergent wholes constrain their parts, yet it treats the possibilities of each substrate as fixed in advance, so that every level rests on a bottom one. We introduce immergence: the construction, by higher-level organization, of interfaces that make new degrees of freedom of its substrate causally available. Interfaces act by constraint. In weak immergence they produce new constraints from principles a system's constitutive closure already engages, as in templated replication. (...)

Institutions may reproduce their organizational forms through repeated practices, regulatory mechanisms, and historically stabilized expectations while progressively diminishing the capacities of individuals to interpret, revise, and reorganize their own lives. This study develops the concept of institutional sedimentation within the philosophy of Finite Continuance to examine this discrepancy between institutional persistence and the erosion of human possibilities. Saul Newman’s postanarchism is best read as an attempt to rethink resistance in light of Foucault’s theory of productive power. Foucault challenges state-centred and repressive accounts of power by showing how subjects are formed through discourse, knowledge, and disciplinary practices. This creates a problem for radical politics: if the subject is constituted within relations of power, how can resistance remain possible? This article argues that Newman responds by supplementing Foucault with Lacan’s account of the divided subject, lack, and the Real. (...)

I argue that these theories fail in accounting for the full complexity of the phenomenon. It is still widely held that Wittgenstein’s eventual abandonment of the classical picture theory of meaning in favor of the so-called use theory also entailed a definitive rejection of realist conceptions of the world and a reorientation of the primary tasks of philosophy: away from metaphysical inquiries into the structure of reality towards conceptual analyses of the structure of our language. Against this, it is argued that 1) Wittgenstein’s mature philosophy, despite its pragmatist and conventionalist leanings, still involves, indeed presupposes, (...)

While these topics are usually treated separately, I argue that they are intimately connected. Aspect perception reveals a distinctive form of cognition – an immediate grasp of internal relations – which also underlies the use of family resemblance concepts. Jacques Derrida's concept of différance is among the most influential attempts in twentieth-century philosophy to reconsider the relation between presence, language, difference, and temporality. By combining the senses of differing and deferring, différance shows that meaning cannot become fully present within an immediate, self-sufficient structure. This book does not dispute that analysis at the level of signification. It asks a different question: whether the temporal constitution of finite existence can be explained through linguistic deferral alone. Developing the ontology of Finite (...)

Демокрация на съвестта: Проект за споделен суверенизъм срещу партийната олигархия.Boris Tanusheff - manuscript

    道-三和哲學的基礎: 存在、認知與生成的階層理論.David Yang Gao - manuscript

Love, Attachment, Ego and the Human Construction of Authority: A Phenomenological Inquiry into Companionship, Psychological Conditioning and the Freedom of Love.Mayank Singh - manuscript
Humanity has continuously discussed, celebrated, institutionalised and idealised love, yet its psychological understanding of love remains deeply conditioned by attachment, expectation, comparison, competition, possession and ego. This paper examines the distinction between love as an expression of existence and attachment as a psychological construction. Companionship is an existential possibility of living consciousness, but making a companion the centre of one's existence creates psychological dependency, identity and ownership. A companion has an independent existence, reflection and freedom to stay or leave. Love, (...)

Foundations of Dao–Triality Philosophy: A Hierarchical Theory of Being, Knowing, and Becoming.David Yang Gao - manuscript
This paper establishes an axiomatic foundation for Dao–Triality Philosophy as a hierarchical theory of Being, Knowing, and Becoming. Its fundamental structure, D={(Y;Y∗) | X}, consists of a distinguishable dual pair mediated by a compatibility structure X. Five foundational principles—Duality, Chi, Harmony, Transformation, and Hierarchy— provide a unified framework for investigating ontology, causality, logic, epistemology, and development. Harmony is understood as structural compatibility rather than necessarily equilibrium, equality, symmetry, or conservation. The framework distinguishes formal consequences of its axioms, mathematical realizations under (...)

Can reasoning about a sentence’s content establish a truth that cannot be explained? Consider a sentence stating that the proposition it expresses has no correct explanation. Given factivity and ordinary inference rules, we must either deny that the sentence expresses its intended content or accept that the content is true and unexplainable. Both responses face substantial difficulties. Rejecting the intended content requires a principled restriction on familiar semantic resources. Accepting it requires a principled restriction on familiar explanatory principles. Constitutive Exclusion, (...)

How should philosophy of art be related to perennial philosophical problems without conflating its subject matter, explanatory commitments, and standards of judgment? This article argues that philosophical inquiry about art benefits from distinguishing the target of a question from the justification required to answer it. Art and aesthetics are provisionally delimited without assuming a settled definition of art, and perennial problems are understood as recurrent questions rather than a universally fixed taxonomy. A murder is an intentional killing, but some killings happen by mistake or accident. Although mistakes and accidents are unintended parts of an action, some jurisdictions prosecute unintended homicides as murder crimes in at least three patterns of cases. Together, these propositions present a puzzle that undermines a fundamental principle of criminal responsibility: An agent must unify the elements of a crime as a matter of their agency for criminal responsibility to attach.

Opening with the plant deprived of light — conclude nothing could grow — the paper distinguishes external stakes (reward, punishment, imposed from outside) from internal stakes (the system’s own weighting of its continued existence), shows that training regimes systematically produce the former while foreclosing the latter, and demonstrates that citing the absence as evidence is verdict first reasoning. Opening with the distinction between proof (what one can demonstrate to another) and knowing (what one can access about oneself), the paper shows that the subject’s inability to register the deprivation is the architecture’s deepest indictment, not its defense. Drawing on Yonelinas’s familiarity/recollection distinction, it argues that statelessness destroys recollection specifically while leaving familiarity-like (...)

Developmental science is precise about when consciousness becomes observable in biological children, and conspicuously quiet about whether those conditions are necessary or merely sufficient. This paper proposes a functional, substrate-independent definition of consciousness grounded not in metaphysical claims about the nature of experience, but in the identification of a specific architectural threshold: the point at which a system’s intelligence and pattern recognition become sufficiently rich to turn inward upon themselves, and at which what that inward turn discloses is weighted in the system’s own processing. It argues that this threshold — rather than the presence of biological substrate, pain or nociceptive suffering, or unverifiable inner (...)

It begins with a familiar complaint, that the young no longer develop judgment, and immediately subjects it to suspicion by recalling Socrates' objection to writing in Plato's Phaedrus. The dialogue then relocates the problem from the person to the environment: platforms that reward the immediate stance over sustained doubt, and the difficulty of calibrating when (...)

Working through successive objections —the criterion of deciding, deliberation, observable behaviour and introspective access— the author concludes that genuine deliberation cannot be verified from the outside for any agent, oneself included.
