I gave up on most of my fanfiction reading logging the last couple of months, but hope to start that up again soon. In the meantime, I post TBR Challenge and monthly reading logs on my website/blog - I haven't been cross-posting here recently, my apologies, but my reading has been pretty sparse anyway. My December reading log goes live there Friday morning.

The new DVD/BluRay arrived today! Great service from Best Buy! It arrived before today's watchalong! I could tell pulling it out of the box that it is much nicer than the cheap-ish one that I returned.

However, my research was somehow incorrect and it is not multi-region for DVDs. It worked fine with an American DVD. I haven't tested the BluRay yet - I think I only have one, that came packaged with a DVD of the same movie.

I did not scream. I get a sticker, right? Because I didn't scream or cry?

Possibly the DVD region can be hacked, but I don't have the right sort of universal programmable remote to do that. A problem for another day.

So it's back to the little old tv and portable player to watch British DVDs. Sigh. It's not the end of the world.

While the church for my choir's New Year's Eve performance was not absolutely jammed, it was pretty full, including the balconies, and judging from comments from friends as I exited through the sanctuary, it was an excellent and meaningful performance. Jean, who used to sing with us, said she had cried through the entire part three. Whoa. It was also special because for one of our regular soprano soloists, Jess, it was her fiftieth performance as a soloist.

After the performance, I was too wiped out for dinner; luckily, a bus came pretty quickly. I got home, ate dinner, removed my eye makeup, and crawled into bed. Surprisingly, after my afternoon coffee, I managed to get to sleep fairly soon. I don't recall hearing many fireworks (apparently, someone saved their illegal firecrackers for the night of New Year's Day...a lot of them).

New Year's Day, I had decided our menu was nachos and another small trifle. The nachos had cheese, pre-cooked chicken seasoned with adobo and mild salsa, and spinach. The trifle was in a glass loaf pan: more cinnamon graham crackers for a base, a layer of spiced peaches (from a jar), a thick layer of whipped cream, pumpkin snaps, blueberries, and a drizzle of the sugar syrup from the peaches. It all turned out great!

January 2, I hung out with

Today is laundry and more Flight Rising. I have to go back to the dayjob on Monday, so I might do some cooking today or tomorrow as well.

1. Work load at dayjob has been low this week; we got out at noon yesterday, and today I can log off at 12:30 pm. We are then off through January 2 for winter break (yay, academia). I had a couple of small things I was able to resolve this morning, go me!

2. I did not send out Xmas cards this year, but I appreciate every one I received. I hope to be back to it next year.

3. I am thawing out a chuck roast to cook later this week, probably Friday. My tamarind-sauce-flavored vegetable soup from Sunday, which includes silken tofu, grape tomatoes, carrot, potato, and green beans, is very delicious, especially with a couple tablespoons of congee dumped in. Last night, I finished off my bag of post-surgery chicken nuggets and baked sliced golden potatoes at 425 degrees F with olive oil and salt.

4. I have been listening to a ton of Xmas music, so at least I am somewhat in the holiday spirit. I did not have energy to pull out my ornament tree and dress it up, but we have a smaller one downstairs so I moved it from the corner onto the dining room table--the ornaments were still on it from last year! We have some cards propped around the base, and I have more on the little desk in the guest room. I didn't use my usual space in the back room because it would block my DVD screen, which I need for the Blake's 7 watchalong and possibly even some Shakespeare.

5. I have tentative plans for Xmas afternoon with local friends. I want to get started on my fancy wooden turtle puzzle (which I have had for several years), and also to do some mending of clothing. I especially want to try needle-felting a hole in a very old black cashmere cardigan (commercially knitted); I was wearing it when I broke my elbow years ago, so couldn't wash it for weeks, and it got a moth hole under one arm before I was healed up. I am not sure if the hole is too big for felting. We shall see. I have washed it after its long storage!

TBR Challenge – Change of Plans: Much Ado About Margaret by Madeleine Roux.

Happy Halloween! It's great weather for it today, very windy with a chill in the air. The forecast warned that decorations should be secured against gusts!

I am not sure where my focus is but it does not appear to be in my neighborhood this week. I'm glad the weekend is almost here.

Choir is kicking off with a long weekend rehearsal September 6. I might or might not have to miss the first Monday night rehearsal after my surgery, which would be a bummer, but it's better than missing a concert.

We will be singing a joyous concert all about death, LOL, consisting of the following three pieces: Pearsall's "Lay a Garland," Victoria's "Requiem Officium Defunctorum," and Howells' "Requiem," old sandwiched in the much newer.

We had some big thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and the heat seems to have broken for now. Although humid, it was in the mid-sixties Farenheit this morning when I did my jog. I have opened windows!

On my jog, I have occasionally, rarely, had a male observer yell something catcall-y from a car or whatever, but this morning, I got a solemn thumbs up from a middle-aged woman whose car was stopped at the light, and a smile from a younger woman jogging the opposite direction while I was doing my cooldown walk. That was really nice.

I’ll be at Readercon 34 this weekend after spending most of the last couple of weeks doing massive re-reads.

Love for our Elders is a program to send handwritten letters to older adults. "Our mission is to alleviate social isolation among older adults through handwritten letters and intergenerational connections."

1. I participated in Science! This involved an MRI of my right calf while at rest and before, during, and after doing a minute of movement. I got paid, and used part of it to finally buy the Shape Note song book a college friend (from choir) worked on. The next step is to try and make at least a few of the monthly sings in my neighborhood this summer, while I'm off from regular choir.

After a glitch with my Apple account, their very helpful (!) customer service got me fixed up and I managed to sneak in the first episode of Murderbot before dress rehearsal, and the second one when I got home. I just finished it and am ready for more. It's a good adaptation. I never feel like adaptations replace books because there's no way to capture narrative voice in the same way in a visual medium, but there are other advantages books don't have. I love seeing actors interpret characters; it's a sort of fanfiction. The actors are all great.

Maybe I will also finally watch Ted Lasso. Severance sounds too depressing for me right now.

I returned to the AU soulmark series An Ever-Fixed Mark by AMarguerite for the second and third installments, which I enjoyed as much as the first.

That Looks on Tempests explores what might have happened if Colonel Fitzwilliam had survived Waterloo. A Dalliance with the Duke tries a different path, in which widowed Lizzy takes up with the Duke of Wellington instead of her cousin-by-marriage Darcy; this one gets a bit spicy!

For those who are not fanfiction readers, a "soulmark" story generally posits that people are born with, or attain at adolescence, a mark somewhere on their body, usually a name or a line of dialogue, that indicates one's soulmate/true love/most significant person. The best of these stories, I feel, interrogate the concept and its societal and personal implications, which the author does in this series.

I saw Sinners last night with my friend L. at The Bourse, and wow wow wow.

Generic description: set in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s, the story revolves around a pair of twins (both played by Michael B. Jordan) returning home from Chicago to open a juke joint in an old, empty sawmill with an ominous stain on the floor. Their young cousin, whose preacher father tells him playing the blues is unholy, is going to perform there for opening night. Things don't go well, which is clear from the opening scene, one day after the rest of the movie.

The music in this movie is absolutely sublime and there's some great dancing as well. Also, this is a dark fantasy/horror movie, so expect gore.

It was filmed in Louisiana. Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish stood in for the Mississippi town in the midst of cotton plantations, and they also did some filming in Bogalusa.

Yes, the new year of Dracula Daily has begun and I am still finishing up. Onwards!

October 11:
Mina says, "I know that all that brave earnest men can do for a poor weak woman, whose soul perhaps is lost—no, no, not yet, but is at any rate at stake—you will do. But you must remember that I am not as you are. There is a poison in my blood, in my soul, which may destroy me; which must destroy me, unless some relief comes to us."

It is interesting to me that it's two women who are attacked by Dracula and transformed. Is this partly because the author thinks women dying is more poignant, or because the author thinks women are weaker and thus more likely to either succumb or to become victims? Or some degree of both? Because otherwise, Mina is a strong character, very proactive. We don't know anything about Renfield prior to his enslavement (?) by Dracula; is there an implication he had a mental illness already?

"You must promise me, one and all—even you, my beloved husband—that, should the time come, you will kill me. I mean, this is the sign of a badass character. Mina, you are a BAMF.

This whole day's section absolutely revels in Victorian literary sentiment.
