Please please please bring your band closer to me.  There really ~is~ magic in the blues.  You can't take me where I want to go if you won't come closer!  We have a nice arena.  Good local food, too.  Please.  Please.  I need to hear Santana in person.  Just once.   It would last me a lifetime, I just know it.

Much love,
Chained to Shreveport

Here's a recipe I've been making a lot lately:  Low Fat Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookies (made with beans!)
They are SO satisfying. I hope I have time to make a batch this weekend.  I have pre-measured portions of pureed beans in the freezer already  to save me some time.  I also still have three buckets full of pecans from our tree that I need to use up!

Kathy - I have not forgotten to get you my tortilla recipe - just been busy.  Will post it this evening if my circus of a life slows a little.

I'm not a particularly good writer, but I do have things I'd like to say outside of a friends-locked personal journal.

I love listening to people talk about things they love.  I've watched/listened to a few dozen YouTube videos of Neil deGrasse Tyson while I'm cooking or folding laundry, instead of watching tv.

Somehow I never watched Cosmos before now.  I'm using Cosmos sort of as background "music" at work to drown out the random and chaotic noise, which I can't control.  Even if I can't pay close attention to what he is saying, or watch the video which occupies a tiny corner of my desktop, I'm really enjoying listening to Carl Sagan talk.

My favorite part so far is Dr. Sagan affectionately petting an oak tree.   :-)

Somehow missing from my previous post is this paragraph:

I bought a hardbound copy of The Witches of Eastwick. I haven't seen the movie so I didn't have any expectations... just thought I'd give it a try since it only cost a quarter.   I don't think I like it but I'm just barely into it. I read some reviews and I think maybe I'm not really supposed to like the characters but eh... I'm really not sure I like it.  I may be missing the point or something.

I don't know WHAT I want to read so I'm looking at those "top 100 novels of all time" type lists and just giving things a try.  Great Expectations sounds like a "nice, safe" choice.   Like I said in my last post, I do have twenty or so to choose from so if I really hate The Witches of Eastwick I don't have to waste my time.

SCORE!!!    Every September there is a giant book bazaar just up the street at Centenary College. Some years I haven't been able to go because it's held on D's birthday.  This year it wasn't - WOO HOO!!!   D and I accidentally showed up right as they dropped all prices to half-off. If we had known, we'd have gotten twice as much!!

I didn't find the two books I went looking for:  _Pride and Prejudice_ and _Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance_  (anybody got either of these that they'd be willing to trade away??)  but I did find a pile of other books, including some that Connor will need to read for school this year, and I'd like to eventually read them too.

I do have twenty other books I could read instead.  :)

Being Connor's mom is a lot of fun. He has always been fascinated by bugs.  After a number of episodes with full on shrieking and wall-climbing, he learned how to approach me and present a bug so that I can look at it without flipping out.  He instantly recognizes when I'm calling for him to rescue me from a big water bug.  ::shudder::

Connor and I spent many afternoons "chasing" dragonflies to identify and sometimes photograph them.  He found a cocoon of some sort and we put it in a jar to keep watch over it. Just when we were about to give it up for dead, an adorable nocturnid moth emerged.  He found a dead cicada wasp when we first moved down here - I was tempted to pack up and move right back to California, but instead learned everything I could about them.  Now we look forward to the emergence of the cicada wasps outside the entrance of the library each summer, and we stop to watch them and try to figure out which are male and female where ever we spot them.  I'm still afraid of them when they're particularly agitated, but the knowledge I have sure helps.

When we began to homeschool, I joined the LJ group entomology so that I would have interesting photos to share with him and jumping off point for all sorts of learning.  I still call him in to look at entomology postings every now an then and it still sometimes prompts us to do further searches.  It's fun.  Lately though, he's been catching things and I already know what they are.  This weekend he caught a "fluffy dragonfly-like-thing" and brought it to D, who said "It might be a damselfly...." and so Connor brought it to me.  I said "oh, that's not a damsel fly, it's a robber fly.  They inject their prey with a venomous digestive fluid that liquifies the insides so they can suck it all out through their nose."  I impressed the heck out of him with that but just to be sure, I googled 'robber fly' with him and confirmed that I know my bugs. Go figure. :)

He still puts giant rubber cockroaches in my chair and every once in a while big hairy fake spiders on my desk.  We have fly-strips and every once in a while there will be a giant plastic fly stuck to it.  Even with this I wish he would stay this age forever.  He's such an awesome kid.

My dad used to ride off into the california foothills on his motorcycle just about every weekend.  He's been dead for almost 11 years and I'm finally understanding him and realizing all the ways we were alike.  All I understood while he was alive were the ways in which we were different. I imagine that he saw all those likenesses even though I couldn't.

Damon removed the backrest on the passenger seat on his motorcycle yesterday.  It means that I have to sit a lot closer to him and hang on with both arms. I'm really glad he did that.  Riding on the back with him now is harder on my back and a lot more work to maintain balance but it's so much more fun and it means that we're basically cuddling all the time we're on the bike together.  When we go for a ride like we did yesterday, I usually ride my own bike.  I love that but it's a bit stressful with having to watch traffic, keep an eye on Damon, and trying to keep up with him.  I -really- enjoyed the ride yesterday and again was reminded of why my dad spent so much time riding through God's Country.  It's ironic that I found God's Country for myself in Louisiana.  Some day I would like to ride through my dad's God's Country but getting me and my motorcycle to california isn't a reality right now.

Our "baby" was hatched this week - presenting : The Weekly Tickle
It won't mean much to anyone outside of Shreveport, but it's been a big hit with the locals.  Now we just have to sell some advertisements to fund future publication.  We gotten several nibbles,  "Hell yes, I want to advertise - but I can't do it this week, have to wait till next week."  Now to turn those into full on bites with checks that can go in the bank to buy more toner and paper.

I love the burt's bees moisturizer cream "day radiance" or somesuch, but it's $15 for a 2oz bottle. (EEEEEK!)
I like it because it is pretty potent but feels extremely light, and doesn't feel like a bunch of nasty chemicals.
Can anyone recommend something similar that doesn't cost so much?

I've tried samples of the newer Olay products, but they contain a fragrance that whiffs of diaharrea to me.   It's also in very popular perfume... some of my coworkers smell like they are very sick and need to change their pants.

om nom nom!! This is the best way to get rid of left over chicken.  I sort of followed this sauce recipe, but didn't measure anything.  Connor made his homemade tortillas but since they're so thick, I layered the dish. I also had too much chicken for the amount of sauce, so I tossed in about a cup of my version of Ranch Style Beans.  Next time I'll double the enchilada sauce.  That stuff is GOOD.

BTW - why do you cook the flour in oil?  I didn't know what I was going for with that.

I'm going to make a cobbler later to get rid of some canned cherries I opened and but they didn't suit the need at the time.  It looks easy enough!

I wonder if I'm getting sick?

I just ate a gigantic bowl of lentils and macaroni with lemon juice and cavendar's greek seasoning. I barely stopped to breathe and now I'm considering drinking lemon juice straight from the bottle.

The last thing I want to do is point my coworkers to my LiveJournal so I've put up a website all about the candy and the Junior Olympics.  It's not finished but it gets the info out there.

http://www.lagniappeconfections.com/

Prices are by the dozen to keep someone from trying to place a thirty-three cent order, but I'll sell them in whatever quantity someone wants.

Tonight I made a batch of special ordered candy for a coworker: 50 amaretto chocolate covered cherries, with cherries that have been soaking in amaretto liqueur for several days.  I don't think I can ship something with alcohol in it but it was a neat experiment.

I guess when the JO's are over we'll turn it into a business but right now it's all about fencing.

We Are Going To The Junior Olympics!!!!!!!

Connor was amazing today.  I'm hyperventilating and I can barely type.  He qualified for the Junior Olympics in the TOUGHER competition.  I think it was because he "knew" how it would go and put NO pressure on himself.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!

I have to sell my car (sokay I have my motorcycle) and  a WHOLE LOT OF CANDY to raise the money to make this trip.  What a wonderful problem to have, eh? :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Anybody got a spare $1500 laying around?  SQUEEEEE!!

Edit: - I'm adding a paypal button. This trip is a wonderful burden to have, for certain but we need all the help we can get. Stay tuned for a post about the candy I'm selling!
