In advance of the official September opening of the Auckland City Rail Link Stations, a series of First Look events has been organised in the month of August.   Karanga-a-Hape Station was revealed on August 15. The station provides a direct rail link for Auckland’s famous and popular K’road district, one of the most vibrant, diverse and thriving areas in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland). The Open Day crowds brought thousands of people to the precinct surrounding the station, animating the neighbourhood bars, restaurants and galleries and demonstrating how new infrastructure brings social and community benefits to everyone.   The new City Rail Link is New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project, delivering a truly networked rail system and bringing passengers through the city to its most vital and frequented areas - while providing for future growth. Early engagement with Mana Whenua helped shape CRL’s identity, architecture and public realm. Drawing on Te Aranga design principles, integrated public art, te reo Māori station names and place-specific narratives, the stations were designed as enduring public spaces built for decades of growth.   Grimshaw and WSP Architecture designed and delivered the architecture and urban design of the CRL stations from 2017 to 2026. Grimshaw and Jasmax defined the reference design in the project’s initial stages from 2012 to 2017. A first look at Karanga-a-Hape Station. When City Rail Link opens next month, this new station will connect one of Auckland's most creative neighbourhoods to the wider city. Inspired by the Māori creation story of Tāne Mahuta separating Ranginui and Papatūānuku, the station's design pays tribute to the majestic kauri forest that once covered the Karanga-a-Hape ridge. At the Beresford Square entrance, New Zealand’s longest escalator will take passengers 33 metres underground to the platforms. Travellers can look up and see ‘Me te Ōturu’, an installation depicting the Māori lunar calendar, with circular discs carved from kauri capturing the moon’s phases. The mana whenua artist nominated for this station was Reuben Kirkwood (Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki), who also designed the nine-metre-high panels above the Mercury Lane entrance depicting Ira Atua, the celestial realm, and Ira Tangata, the terrestrial realm. Karanga-a-Hape Station opens for a free, ticketed event on Saturday 15 August. Wonderful to see this important project for the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) taking shape. This state-of-the-art biosecurity facility, designed by Jasmax, will feature greenhouses and laboratories to support MPI in protecting Aotearoa New Zealand’s natural environment and plant-based primary industries. Read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/eUmR5txN

The Plant Health and Environment Capability (PHEC) project is taking another important step forward! The facility is beginning to show its finished form, with the superstructure nearing completion, façade installation has commenced and first fix services activities are well underway. One of the most highly technical projects in the country - the true complexity of the building is now clearly evident, requiring close collaboration between all stakeholders. Precon is proud to continue to support this nationally significant project, providing leadership from design management, procurement, consenting, enabling works, and now full project delivery. This continuity has helped facilitate complex stakeholder, design and construction interfaces, and support the successful progression of the project towards completion. We are pleased to contribute to this important project alongside: Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), Crown Infrastructure Delivery Ltd, Southbase Group, Rider Levett Bucknall RLB, Jasmax, Lab-works Architecture Ltd, Jacobs, Holmes Group, Tonkin + Taylor, Pacific Commissioning & Coordination Limited, Marshall Day Acoustics, Bentley & Co #ministryforprimaryindustries #containmentfacilities #projectmanagement #designmanagement #preconstruction

First look at Maungawhau Station – what a stunner! The beautiful exterior, the trickling water wall, and those incredible lava-coloured glass triangles. The station really brings together beauty, function and a deep connection to the whenua. Artist Tessa Harris’s spectacular water wall includes basalt from Maungawhau itself, while 53 glass triangles represent the volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau. And great to see UK expertise playing its part too, with British architects Grimshaw helping to design a station that will be more than just somewhere to catch a train - but also a new community hub for this part of Auckland. Can’t wait for the City Rail Link to open and to arrive here by train! 🚆 Gosha (Malgorzata) Haley UK in New Zealand

Introducing Maungawhau Station. The former Mount Eden Station has been majorly upgraded to connect existing lines and reduce commute times for many Aucklanders. The platforms might be quiet for now, but they will soon be flowing with people when City Rail Link opens on Sunday, 13 September. We’re excited to share more about this transformed station ahead of the ‘First Look’ event tomorrow. Since 2012, a Mana Whenua Forum made up of eight Auckland iwi has been at the heart of City Rail Link, collaborating with architects and artists to develop the design, artwork and narrative for each station. The network tells the creation story of Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, with each station featuring a Māori deity, known as an atua. For Maungawhau Station, Tessa Harris (Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki) was nominated as the mana whenua representative artist, and her artwork references Mataaoho, the atua of volcanoes. For mana whenua, the importance of Maungawhau (Mt Eden) lies in its summit, crater, slopes, lava caves and water springs. Tessa designed a nine-metre-high water wall ‘Parawhenuamea’ which represents the atua of freshwater. The large triangle symbolises Maungawhau (Mount Eden) and features basalt from the mountain itself, while 53 lava-coloured glass triangles, made in collaboration with artist Sofia Athineou, form a map of Auckland's volcanic cones. The copper-coloured ceiling 'Te Ipu-a-Mataaho' references Maungawhau and the volcanic landscape of Tāmaki Makaurau. Maungawhau Station opens for a free, ticketed event on Saturday 8 August. “Good infrastructure binds cities and the people who live in them together.” Those were the words of Transport Minister Christopher Bishop after he announced this morning that City Rail Link will open on Sunday, 13 September. He described CRL as “not simply another piece of infrastructure”, saying its real value lay beyond the tunnels. “It’s what’s outside the tunnels, what’s outside the station doors that matter. Thousands of people riding up the escalators into streets full of shops, offices, students, somewhere decent to eat afterwards – all thriving because of this project. New apartment buildings, homes and town houses popping up, made possible because of this project. “City Rail Link is a symbol of our ambition for Auckland and our ambition for New Zealand.” Designed by Jasmax, Grimshaw and WSP alongside mana whenua and many other collaborators, this project will shape Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland for generations. We are so proud to have been a part of this epic project, and we can’t wait for it to open soon. What a fun experience judging Home of Architecture Interior of the Year Awards this year. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at so many incredible projects was equal parts inspiring and humbling. The calibre of work being produced across Aotearoa is seriously impressive, and choosing winners was no easy task. A huge congratulations to all of the finalists and winners, and to everyone who entered. It’s always worth taking a moment to celebrate the creativity, craftsmanship and passion that goes into creating spaces that genuinely enhance the way people live. A big shout out to my fellow judges Abdallah Alayan Federico Monsalve Gary Lawson It was also an absolute pleasure sharing the judging experience with such a great group of people. Plenty of robust design discussions, lots of laughs, and somehow we even managed to nail a few photos!

Every venue needs a story, and Eden Park’s story has been shaped over 125 years by the people, moments and memories created here. Today, I'm delighted to announce the next chapter in that story: the Lower West Stand redevelopment and the creation of the Coca-Cola Field Club. The Coca-Cola Field Club will be an amazing space which will set a new benchmark for live event experience in New Zealand. This permanent field-level hospitality destination will give fans and guests the opportunity to arrive early, stay late, and remain connected to the action, while being part of the stadium atmosphere at Eden Park. This project is a tangible step in the delivery of Eden Park 2.1 and reflects how leading stadiums around the world are evolving to meet changing fan expectations. Many fans are looking for more than a seat - they want atmosphere, connection, choice and experiences that extend beyond the match, concert or event itself. Made possible through Eden Park’s icon partnership with Coca-Cola, the Coca-Cola Field Club will support sport, entertainment, corporate events, private functions and non-event-day use, while the redevelopment will also include a new balcony overlooking the turf from the west. My thanks to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Naylor Love, Jasmax, KMA and everyone involved in bringing this exciting project to life. This is another important step in ensuring Eden Park continues to evolve as a world-class destination while staying true to what makes it special. The renders shared here, alongside the photo of myself with CEO Naylor Love, Bruno Goedeke, are artist impressions of the Coca-Cola Field Club. Two striking bronze sculptures have been revealed as part of Te Hā Noa – the regeneration of Victoria Street in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Wāhine, a 3.7-metre bronze sculpture, takes the form of a Māori woman performing a karanga – a call of welcome. She will greet people flowing out of Te Waihorotiu Station, expected to be the country's busiest train station when City Rail Link opens. Further along Victoria Street West is Horotiu, a 7.2-metre tuna kūwharuwharu (longfin eel) referencing the legendary guardian of the Waihorotiu Stream. Sandblasted etchings beneath the sculpture trace the stream's former path through the valley now occupied by Queen Street. Wāhine was created by artists Arekatera Maihi (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara, Tainui, Te Waiohua, Ngāpuhi) and Beronia Scott (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei). Horotiu was created by Chris Bailey (Ngāti Hako, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Porou, Te Aupouri) and Sally Smith. Te Hā Noa will turn a six-lane road into a two-lane thoroughfare, widening footpaths to make space for public art, cycle lanes, street furniture, trees and native planting to support stormwater management and ecology, and provide places to pause, linger and gather. This theatre represents a step change in the cultural life of Kirikiriroa Hamilton. It is a clear signal about the intention of the city to connect more deeply with the magnificent Waikato river through a very sophisticated design of outstanding quality. Its immersive interior draws inspiration from the site’s layered history, finding moments of luscious richness and prudent restraint as it demonstrates the level of skill required to realise civic buildings that both inspire and perform to a world-class technical standard.
