CALL FOR PAPERS

The Signal Processing with Adaptive Sparse Structured Representations
(SPARS) workshop aims to bring together people from statistics,
engineering, mathematics, and computer science, fostering the exchange
and dissemination of new ideas and results, both applied and
theoretical, on the general area of sparsity-related techniques and
computational methods, for high dimensional data analysis, signal
processing, and related applications.

Contributions (talks and demos) are solicited as one-page abstracts,
which may extend to a second page in order to include figures, tables
and references. Talks should present recent and novel research
results. We welcome abstract submissions for technological
demonstrations of the mathematical topics within our scope.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

 * Sparse coding and representations, and dictionary learning
 * Sparse and low-rank approximation algorithms

Meeting (in French) Co-conception de systèmes hybrides : quand l'instrumentation et les traitements numériques se rencontrent., June 17th, 2016

Yohann let me know of this French meeting coming up next month at Telecom ParisTech. It is very interesting as imaging systems are more and more going to be judged not on the quality of the images produced but also their ability to provide answers following other metrics (think classification). At that point, these metrics will need to be part of the hardware design process. L'objectif de cette réunion est de discuter des nouvelles approches de conception de nouveaux systèmes d'acquisition pour lesquels le dispositif d'imagerie, de détection ou de mesure est fortement associé aux traitements numériques.
Dans de nombreux domaines, tels que la photographie numérique, la microscopie, l'astronomie ou l'imagerie radar, de nouveaux dispositifs d'acquisition sont développés pour dépasser les performances des systèmes traditionnels, en termes de qualité de signal, d'encombrement, ou pour leur ajouter de nouvelles fonctionnalités. Le principe est d'utiliser un dispositif d'acquisition, autrement dit un instrument, qui favorise l'efficacité des traitements, quitte à dégrader la qualité du signal brut en sortie du détecteur. Ceci donne lieu au développement de nouveaux systèmes "non conventionnels" ou "hybrides", pour lesquels l'instrument et les traitements sont indissociables.
L'enjeu principal de la conception de ces nouveaux systèmes est alors d'optimiser simultanément les paramètres de l'instrument et des traitements. On parle alors de conception conjointe ou co-conception. Cette nouvelle approche repose alors sur :
  1. la définition de nouveaux critères de conception caractérisant la performance globale du système en lien avec sa fonctionnalité
  2. l'utilisation de ces critères pour optimiser conjointement les paramètres de l'instrument et des traitements.
Lors de cette journée seront abordées plusieurs thématiques :
  • les nouvelles technologies (optique, détecteur, etc.) qui favorisent les traitements
  • les traitements associés à ces nouvelles solutions
  • la modélisation globale de la performance des systèmes, en lien avec leurs fonctionnalités
  • l'optimisation conjointe des paramètres d'un système pour une fonctionnalité donnée.

Radar/SAR awaits Compressed Sensing
Compressed sensing (CS) techniques offer a mathmatical framework for the detection and allocation of sparse signals with a reduced number of samples. Today, modern radar systems operate with high bandwidths - demanding high sample rates according to the Shannon-Nyquist theorem - and a huge number of single elements for phased array antennas.
Often only a small amount of target parameters is the final output, raising the question, whether CS could be a good means to reduce data size, complexity, weight, power consumption and costs of radar systems. The amount of publications addressing the application of CS to radar is still limited, leaving open a number of questions.

iTWIST'16, International Traveling Workshop on Interactions Between Sparse Models and Technology, Aalborg, Denmark 24th-26th of August 2016

International Traveling Workshop on Interactions Between Sparse Models and Technology

The aim of the iTWIST workshop is to foster collaboration between international scientific teams for developing new theories, applications and generalizations of the “sparsity paradigm”. This is why this event emphasizes dissemination of ideas through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions.

For this edition, iTWIST’16 will feature invited talks, oral presentations and posters. The workshop welcomes 2-page paper submissions on any aspects of the following themes:

Scope
Technology improvements in multimedia content generation have led to a continuous cycle of creation, processing, communication and consumption of information as part of our social interactions and entertainment. This has spurred the development of efficient ways to acquire, process, communicate and store vast amounts of data. One of the most prominent recent breakthroughs is the development of compressed sensing and sparse representations. To-date these techniques have had significant success in numerous areas of signal acquisition, parameter estimation, communication, and machine learning. These developments have found a home in a number of applications, including media retrieval, radar and medical imaging systems, and video compression, just to mention a few.


This workshop’s objective is to bring together leading researchers around the world to present their newest accomplishments, exchange latest experiences, and explore future directions in the important and evolving fields of CS and sparse representations. In particular, it is focused on the dissemination of recent results in multimedia methods and applications that take advantage of these techniques.


We are inviting original submission to this workshop in the form of full-length 6-pages papers, or short 2-pages position papers (these latter are not going to be published in the proceedings). Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

  • Theoretical aspects of compressive sensing and sparsity
  • Communication and networking applications
  • CS and sparsity for 5G communication systems

Description of Workshop

Over a decade ago, Stanford statistician David Donoho predicted that the 21st century will be the century of data. "We can say with complete confidence that in the coming century, high-dimensional data analysis will be a very significant activity, and completely new methods of high-dimensional data analysis will be developed; we just don't know what they are yet." -- D. Donoho, 2000.

Unprecedented technological advances lead to increasingly high dimensional data sets in all areas of science, engineering and businesses. These include genomics and proteomics, biomedical imaging, signal processing, astrophysics, finance, web and market basket analysis, among many others. The number of features in such data is often of the order of thousands or millions - that is much larger than the available sample size.

For a number of reasons, classical data analysis methods inadequate, questionable, or inefficient at best when faced with high dimensional data spaces:
 1. High dimensional geometry defeats our intuition rooted in low dimensional experiences, and this makes data presentation and visualisation particularly challenging.
 2. Phenomena that occur in high dimensional probability spaces, such as the concentration of measure, are counter-intuitive for the data mining practitioner. For instance, distance concentration is the phenomenon that the contrast between pair-wise distances may vanish as the dimensionality increases.
3. Bogus correlations and misleading estimates may result when trying to fit complex models for which the effective dimensionality is too large compared to the number of data points available.
 4. The accumulation of noise may confound our ability to find low dimensional intrinsic structure hidden in the high dimensional data.
 5. The computation cost of processing high dimensional data or carrying out optimisation over a high dimensional parameter spaces is often prohibiting.

Topics

This workshop aims to promote new advances and research directions to address the curses and uncover and exploit the blessings of high dimensionality in data mining. Topics of interest include all aspects of high dimensional data mining, including the following:
- Systematic studies of how the curse of dimensionality affects data mining methods
- Models of low intrinsic dimension: sparse representation, manifold models, latent structure models, large margin, other?
- How to exploit intrinsic dimension in optimisation tasks for data mining?
- New data mining techniques that scale with the intrinsic dimension, or exploit some properties of high dimensional data spaces
- Dimensionality reduction
- Methods of random projections, compressed sensing, and random matrix theory applied to high dimensional data mining and high dimensional optimisation
- Theoretical underpinning of mining data whose dimensionality is larger than the sample size
- Classification, regression, clustering, visualisation of high dimensional complex data sets
- Functional data mining
- Data presentation and visualisation methods for very high dimensional data sets
- Data mining applications to real problems in science, engineering or businesses where the data is high dimensional

Paper submission
High quality original submissions are solicited for oral and poster presentation at the workshop. Papers should not exceed a maximum of 8 pages, and must follow the IEEE ICDM format requirements of the main conference. All submissions will be peer-reviewed, and all accepted workshop papers will be published in the proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Submit your paper here.

Robust Subspace Learning and Computer Vision (RSL-CV 2015)

Recent research on robust subspace learning and tracking by decomposition into low-rank plus additive matrices provides a suitable framework for computer vision applications such as video coding, key frame extraction, hyper-spectral video processing, dynamic MRI, motion saliency detection and background/foreground separation. In this context, decomposition into low rank plus sparse matrices has been developed in different formulation problems such as robust principal component analysis, robust non-negative matrix factorization, robust matrix completion, subspace tracking, and low-rank minimization
The aim of RSL-CV 2015 (http://rsl-cv2015.univ-lr.fr/workshop/) are three-fold: 1) proposing robust subspace learning and tracking for computer vision applications, 2) proposing new adaptive and incremental algorithms for robust subspace learning and tracking to reach the requirements of real-time applications such as background/foreground separation, motion saliency and video coding, and 3) proposing robust algorithms to tackle key challenges in applications such as dynamic backgrounds and illumination changes for background/foreground separation.
