Hi I am nuh_s better known as Rosemarycat5! I am new(ish) to Dreamwidth and have only used it for exchanges in the past, but I'd like to get more involved.

Some of my fandoms are The Mechanisms, Stargate SG-1, The Magnus Archives, King Falls AM, The Sentinel, The Adventure Zone, and "mulberry down!!".

I run some exchanges including Let Me Introduce You To My Fandom!, Kill Your Double, Jews In Space, The Mechanized Crossover Event, and the Aromantic Characters Exchange.

My Ao3. My fanvids. SG-1 fic recs bookmark collection.

My goal is to somehow bang out this entire dress by end of day on Wednesday. This may be impossible.

I have cartridge pleated half of the skirt (that took 3 1/2 hours or almost the entirety of the horror audio drama "Do You Copy?")

I have fixed the sleeve pattern, cut the fabric (I think the fabric store only gave me one yard of the peacock instead of 2 but was able to make do with some fudging and doing the side panels in the false-shawl fabric), serged all the edges, and sewed the underbodice sans sleeves (that too 3 1/2 hours or the rest of "Do You Copy?" and the entirety of the lost-and-alone audio drama "All At Sea").

I don't love the texture of the serged seams, but it was the only way I could have finished seams and still meet my time constraints. I would have tried the wrong-sides-together-iron-right-sides-together method, but the princess seams are so finicky with the easing that I decided not to try it out and risk having to seam rip.

We'll see if I go back to the sewing lab tonight and bang out the rest of the skirt or the rest of the bodice!

Here's how cartridge pleats can still win.

The math:
Total fabric length: 240"
Total panels: 10 (24"/panel)
Desired finished length: 46"
Desired finished panel length: 4.6"
Stitch length 0.5" on a 24" panel turns it into 2.5"
What should the stitch length be on a 24" panel to turn it into 4.6"?

After a lot of math saying 0.92" -- which makes the length shorter rather than longer because cartridge pleats are getting length from stacking up the thin layers of cotton, so more pleats = more length -- I finally figured out where I needed to divide instead of multiply.

If we keep in mind the logic that smaller stitch length = more fabric length, 2.5x2=5, half that stitch length is 0.25.

Which is all well and good, but by then I wanted a real answer, so

2.5xA=4.6
A=1.84
0.5/1.84=0.27

Normally, the math in that equation would call for multiplication, but we know because of the weird situation, it's the opposite. SO the answer is a stitch length of 0.27". That's not a full 16th of an inch more than 1/4, so that's what I'll stick with anyway, but I am SO relieved to have an answer that makes sense.

I shall hopefully test this out tomorrow morning!

So, for the 1860s dress I'm working on, it's a hoop skirt, pagoda/bell sleeves, and a false shawl. I bought this gorgeous paneled cotton -- bought out the full bolt of 6ish yards. This is novelty stuff; I will not be able to get more of it. I was PLANNING on doing cartridge pleats for the skirts. The actual 1860s dress I've worked with had that style, and I really wanted to stick with that since it inspired me to try an 1860s dress in the first place. HOWEVER, the tutorial I found on cartridge pleats evidently was done by a skinnier person than I, and the amount that it cuts down the fabric is too much for my yardage.

I have 10 24" panels. Cartridge pleating turns 24" into 2 1/2". Needless to say, I do not have a 25" waist, so I'm gonna have to figure out how to do knife pleats.

The first knife pleat test (which was based on a vague recollection of a tutorial, so possibly incorrect) led to 24"=13", which is then too loose. I'm sure there's a way to do the math and figure out exactly how big to do the pleats to use up the fabric without needing more, but I've yet to figure it out. Time to duck-duck-go "knife pleat math". Wish me good tidings.

I finished my 1890s combo! The shirtwaist took a little too long for my liking. This is because I did nice seam finishing instead of just serging everything. When you don't serge, seam finishing takes FOREVER. Never doing that again if I can avoid that. But it is a nice visual effect.

I am now on draft two of a pattern for my 1920s dress. Boy is that an unflattering silhouette. Hopefully, it will look better with lovely purple chiffon and beading.

I am also running a vidding collab! Me and 10 other vidders have about 20 seconds each of "Call Me" by Blondie to play with, so that's fun.

I found a new little fabric store with some really inexpensive chiffon and satin, which is very exciting because the next garment on my docket is a 1920s beaded dress! I already bought silk chiffon, which I'll use for the final version, but I got about 3 yards for under $7 of poly chiffon in the same color that I'll use for the mockup. Normally, I'd use muslin, but a) I'm running low on muslin and haven't restocked yet and b) the nature of this dress is that the thin fabric will really affect the fit and hang.

I'm planning on using the shirt foundation, which I've already patterned, plus a half circle skirt with handkerchief points to make the shape. Still debating the following
- Whether to have a long v-neck and bring the shoulders in towards the neck or have a wide v-neck keeping the shoulders where they are
- How dropped the waist should be
- How exactly I'm going to set up the thin fabric for beading in the easiest way (current thought is sewing it onto an extra copy of the paper pattern and ripping away the paper at the end)
- The back neckline
- If beads should extend beyond the torso section and if they should also be present on the back
nuh_s: Half of Miss Parker's face is visible on one side with an off white textured background. (Miss Parker partial face)
Just spent 4 hours in the sewing lab setting up my patterns for a 1890s-inspired cape and walking skirt. Turns out I did not know how to properly do the hem of a flared skirt pattern (or at least, working with it in several panels threw me off), but it is fixable without needing to append more paper hopefully.

I also apparently will need to acquire more wool. Hopefully, that will be easy. The wool I have currently took two months to ship, so I'm gonna need a different place. I got a couple recommendations including Fabric Mart, which seems to have a really good sale at the moment. They have 70% a fabric that would make a killer Inverness Cape...

My goal for the long weekend is to
- Fix the skirt patterns
- Cut & sew skirt & cape mockups
- Cut real fabric for the cape

I have reached What's My Line Part 2 in my Buffy rewatch, and, can I just say, I love Kendra. She's such a wonderful character, especially in contrast and collaboration with Buffy. We really get three sides to what a slayer can be: Kendra the dutiful who follows the rules to the point of asking no questions and not fostering choice for herself outside of her role as slayer, Buffy the unconventional who refuses some of the limits of being a slayer and refuses to let that be all she is while still holding herself to her duty at the end of the day, and Faith the rogue who denies her duty entirely and embraces the power itself outside of it.

One of the moments in What's My Line Part 2 that would be great to explore in the Umad AU (an AU in which Buffy was killed by the master, so Dawn was created as the key and sent to the new slayer, Kendra, therefore having an altered history with her - original post here) was Kendra's comments on family.

"Kendra: The things you do and have, I was taught, distract from my calling. Friends, school... even family.

Buffy: Even family?

Kendra: My parents, they sent me to my Watcher when I was very young.

Buffy: How young?

Kendra: I don't remember them, actually. I've seen pictures. But, uh, that's how seriously the calling is taken by my people. My mother and father gave me to my Watcher because they believed that they were doing the right thing for me, and for the world. (puts down the stake and gets a sympathetic look from Buffy) Please, I don't feel sorry for meself. Why should you?

Buffy: I don't know, I... I guess it just sounds very lonely.

Kendra: Emotions are weakness, Buffy. You shouldn't entertain them."

I think Dawn would have had to be sent (or ran away) to Mr. Zabuto along with Kendra in this AU. Possibly as a potential herself. How would Kendra's view of family and connections be different with a sister in the mix?

Also I AM picturing Dawn sneaking along with Kendra in the cargo hold of the plane to Sunnydale.

It also occurs to me that Buffy doesn't actually need to be permanently dead for this AU to work, just for Kendra not to be killed by Drusilla. At that point, the monks' spell could simply diverge to the new slayer rather than the old one, and the AU would continue as planned. It's also a lovely though to imagine this new Dawn who is Kendra's sister also getting to know Buffy and having a connection with her. It makes me think of Toby's -- excuse me -- Tobias's reaction to Bay in Switched At Birth's what-if-the-switch-never-happened episode. Even though he was just meeting her for the first time and had never been her brother, he felt like there was some incredible connection they were supposed to have (even if he didn't realize it was a sibling relationship!).

Also, having rewatched some Kendra content, I do think the closest accent to hers is Runaway Bay, Jamaica. That would have to be the setting if I ever do get around to writing this! I also think I would do shorter vignettes within the AU rather than one long fic.

The Cranach gown is finally done! I was able to wear it on Halloween with pins as the closures, and I spent a too-long 5 1/2 hours sewing hooks and eyes on Monday. I'd like to get some good shots in focus to share, which I hopefully will be able to do this weekend.

In TV viewing news, I continue my viewing of The X-Files. Just finished season 4, and I am loving it. The ep from all the different povs was hilarious and I cannot stop thinking about Mulder's yelp. Total mandroid, that man in black. And the pie.

I am also rewatching Buffy, and my heart remains so fond. While I dislike Angel/Buffy, I have been paying attention this rewatch to Angel and Cordelia's dynamic early on, long before any inkling of their relationship existed, and I am having fun through that lens. (I like Angel on ATS because he's so well balanced by characters who don't take him too seriously, unlike Buffy who ends up in a loop of 'when I kiss you I want to die').

And I continue to show my friend Stargate SG-1. We just watched "The First Ones." JUSTICE FOR ROTHMAN! I am currently doing Rothman recs over on [community profile] stargateficrec. A wonderful character who was done so dirty by the show. I do love him.
nuh_s: Miss Parker has her face turned to the side with grey circles behind her. Her face is almost gentle. (Miss Parker)
The sleeves are finally finished! After 3 and a half hours, the sleeves are pieced and set into the vest. Now all that remains is:
- Collar, including cutting out the inner side, interfacing, and flat lining
- Skirt, including cutting fabric, sewing the two sections together, gathering, and affixing to the bodice
- Hooks & Eyes

But we're getting there. This WILL be wearable on Thursday, mark my words.
nuh_s: Photo of the Toy Soldier looking up at a blue sky. It is pale with a drawn-on mustache and red lapels on its black jacket. (Default)
I want so badly for this dress to be DONE. I plan on wearing it on Halloween to be Judith, and in order for that to happen, I need to finish it fast.

I have
- Cut the fabric
- Quilted and beaded the velvet sections
- Put in the eyelets for the lacing
- Discovered that putting in the eyelets is going to make machine sewing that section risky
-
Attempted to handsew that section
- Failed
- Discovered I do not have enough hooks & eyes for this closure

So, tonight, if I have the nerve, I will go and attempt to very, very slowly machine sew (not even using the foot pedal, just hand cranking) the center panel with eyelets to the 'vest'. I also need to sew the sleeves, set them, cut the skirt fabric, sew & attach the skirt, and add the collar. I will not have time to make the hat, which is too bad, but at least I have the jeweled hairnet.

My goal with the hooks & eyes is to put in the 5 (it looked like I had 10, but half the eyes are a little too small and an odd shape) to close it well enough for Thursday and then buy more of them to sew on later.

I'm currently trying to figure out (or come up with a plausible option for) where Kendra (the Vampire Slayer) is from in Jamaica. The wiki notes that Marti Noxon said in an audio commentary that Kendra's dialect coach tauch Bianca Lawson a "specific" "obscure" accent, but does not list the location.

Attempts: Asking on Reddit, reading through previous related Reddit asks, looking into Sam Zabuto (Kendra's watcher) especially the surname's origins, looking into Jamaican accents in the International Dialects of English Archive, trying (and failing) to find the name of the dialect coach on the show who is uncredited
Other considerations:
  • Kendra was mostly raised by her watcher. Since the watcher's council is in England, it stands to reason that Zabuto would have spent time there, influencing his and Kendra's accents.
  • If Kendra is code switching from Patwa to standard English in the company of the Americans in the show, the result would end up varied person to person doing that. (People from the same area who speak English as a second language often have more variety in accents in my experience than people from the same English-speaking area would. I'm applying this to the Patwa code switching too.)
If I end up doing anything with the Umad AU, I would want to pick a specific area in Jamaica for Kendra and Dawn to grow up and maybe get a sense of the backgrounds of those around them, not as a plot point but just to flesh them out.
nuh_s: Miss Parker has her face turned to the side with grey circles behind her. Her face is almost gentle. (elegant)
What would the Wishverse in Buffy make Dawn?

The wish: I wish Buffy Summers never came to Sunnydale.

Since Dawn was created to be protected by the Slayer by the monks in season 5, she probably would have been sent to the next Slayer after Buffy is killed by the Master, Kendra. So what is Kendra's sister the key like? She would probably look different, more like Kendra since she would be made out of her. Kendra was spotted as a potential Slayer early on and was raised by Mr. Zabutto. In this AU, Dawn would have had to stick with her. Maybe she was too young to be identified as a potential or not and was trained too. Maybe Kendra refused to leave her behind. Perhaps in this AU, Dawn has some Slayer training!

I'd love to find out what "specific" "obscure" region of Jamaica Kendra's accent is from (quotes from an audio commentary from Marti Noxon based on Kendra's dialect coach). That would be where Dawn & Kendra would have grown up!

After Buffy dies and Kendra is called, would Zabutto send her to Sunnydale to deal with the Master? Or to Cleveland to deal with the second Hellmouth? Would Dawn get to come officially or would she sneak along?

How would having a little sister change Kendra's perspective as a perfect Slayer? It would necessitate some level of selfishness. Her role as Slayer in the show comes above all else. She doesn't seem to have friends or many person possessions, just her duty to the world. But if she has a sibling she looks after, that is a connection outside of her duty AND something to protect other than the world. I think Dawn in this AU could play a similar but greater role to Kendra as Buffy does in the show, prompting her to think outside the traditional Slayer framework.

Would Kendra have made the same decision to save Dawn as Buffy did in The Gift?

On that point, how would Kendra respond to the first Slayer differently than Buffy, presuming she met her at all?

For this AU, I'd want to keep Dawn's overall personality, albeit changed by different circumstances, but it could be equally interesting to think about a completely different character who would be made in Dawn's role (the key as a human sister).

My latest vid is at last complete!

This vid includes out-of-context clips from seasons 1-6.

This vid went on my list (endless, endless list) of vid ideas and sat there for a while as I thought through things. I didn't want to do Stargate SG-1 but with a different intro, and I didn't want to have Sam be the focus just because she's 'the girl'. I wanted to imagine a different show set in the same universe where Bra'tac is the main character. And I wanted to be self indulgent! I adore Salli Richardson's performance as Drey-auc before she was recast. The fire and pride and poise! In another world, she could have been main cast. From an editing standpoint, this was SO TIME CONSUMING OH MY GOD. The amount of detail and tiny, tiny clips in the original Buffy opening is wild.

I wanted to challenge myself to recreate the starting section with its flurry of movement and almost incomprehensible clips -- about two frames per clip. If you have time, just go frame by frame for what I added there. It was a lot. I actually pulled in an entire episode ("Upgrades") just to use the shot of Sam's eye through a microscope to match the strange eyes in the original.

I used the fonts Buffied, Chiller, and MV Boli to do the titles. If you have any questions or thoughts on the editing or alternate universe show, I would love to hear them!

I think I've got the cranach gown bodice 80% patterned and at least 75% figured out. It's the lacing (which is not the actual closure) that complicated things, but I folded some paper and think I've got a handle on how to make the false jacket element. I will, it turns out, be doing a separate collar piece instead of a stovepipe collar (no seam connecting collar and bodice), which is fine, just a slight aesthetic change. I've been told to look into millinery wire for the collar since it stands up straight fairly far from the neck.

I've also learned that my base sloper bodice has the wrong waist measurement, which is fine for this project, but I'll need to fix that for future stuff if I want things fitted. Pretty sure the sleeve pattern has the wrong wrist too, but I'll deal with that when it comes up.
nuh_s: Harold Finch and John Reese sit close together. Finch has his hand on his chin. (person of interest)
Got the sleeve pattern drafted for a dress project (Cranach gown). I am going with puffs attached rather than a loose chemise under slashed sleeves. The bodice is a little more complicated to make using flat pattern. I made a version in quarter scale (the pattern not the fabric), and it still looks wonky. Then again, the collar IS strange. It's so far away from the neck and tall and obviously boned or stiffined in some way. Hopefully, I can get that patterned tomorrow. It's a project that's been on my list for four years, and I am so glad it's finally happening.

At least the skirt is just a big rectangle even if I do need to decide whether and how I should flatline it since the fashion fabric is a stretch velvet.

As I work my way through my Person of Interest rewatch (all two seasons of it), I made an icon of that cute moment with Reese and Finch watching a security feed together. While they ARE together in the shot, I actually combined two different frames of it to get both of them somewhat in focus. I'm not thrilled with the result, but I like it well enough, and I didn't spend too much time on it. It still has Many adjustment layers though.

I have started watching The X-Files, and I am really enjoying it so far. I already knew going in I was going to be a noromo (a fandom term I think should make a comeback), and I am, true to form, loving Mulder & Scully's relationship. The trust that they are building!!

I went down a little rabbit hole looking for X-Files fan websites, especially noromo ones, so here are some archive links to those. I think my favorite fan term I saw besides noromo was TBO (The Blessed One aka Scully). Remains to see if I'll end up properly fannish about The X-Files, but I shall have the links if I so choose, and now so shall you.

The Acacia Archives.
The Shipper's Nightmare (Mulder/Other and Scully/Other). The LOON. X-Files University. X-Files University Theses. The Bee Squad (Noromo friendly links).

I am currently at the start of season 2. Just finished "Sleepless" in which I was delighted to see Broots. I so want a Pretender fic where Miss Parker, Broots, and Sydney end up at that bar and meet Broots' evil twin.

I'm gonna play around with some posting types, and I'd like to try out a regular multifandom fic rec post for whatever I'm enjoying at the moment. Right now, I am doing a big reread of King Falls AM fic, so I'll include a fair bit of that here! If you read any of these, be sure to leave a nice comment. If you're curious about any of the fandoms, reply and ask about them! I'd be happy to summarize or chat about them!

If You're Drowning (Swim Down) by

Fandom: King Falls AM
Relationships: Sammy Stevens & Ben Arnold
Spoilers: Episode 75
Warnings: Suicide discussion
Summary: After Sammy dodges being taken by the lights and isn't taken by the void, he just keeps driving.
Rec: With some of the most beautiful prose of any kfam fic, this fic is the perfect exploration of episode 75. It takes us out of King Falls to a motel somewhere between the small mountain town and Sammy's old house in California. It's discussion of suicide is honest and hits hard, especially the complicated emotions surrounding it.
Excerpt: "It does not look like the scene of a suicide. It looks like a country road at night, muddy and raised above the surrounding fields, the forest sweeping in behind Sammy. Sammy’s hands are empty, but the fear is there all the same."

Things Stay the Same by

Fandom: King Falls AM
Relationships: Sammy Stevens & Ben Arnold
Spoilers: Episode 68 (set before it, though)
Warnings: car accidents, major injury
Summary: During blizzard season, Sammy and Ben end up crashing the car.
Rec: Some of my favorite kfam whump! It has such excellent character voices and tone and wonderful whump! I find myself rereading this one when I want some comfy whump (comfy for me, not the characters!).

Values Scale by

Fandom: King Falls AM
Relationships: Sammy Stevens & Mary Jensen
Spoilers: Episode 68 (set before it)
Warnings: discussions of loss  abduction
Summary: "AU where you see in black and white until you meet your Soulmate and then you see in full color. Or, at least you should. " Mary finds something kindred in Sammy with regards to losing her husband Tim to the rainbow lights.
Rec: Easily my favorite soulmates series ever. Mary and Tim are not soulmates. They chose to be together and build their life together. This is such a powerful choice for the most stable relationship in the show. Sammy & Ben are platonic soulmates, which is also delightful.

Relationships: Johann & Barry Bluejeans, Johann & Lucretia, Johann & The Voidfish
Spoilers: Full podcast
Warnings: Major character death
Summary: The Red Robe possesses Johann in order to get access to the lunar base. Enemies to friends.
Rec: WOW. This fic is long and good and really, truly explores minor characters in a way that makes them so real. Brad Bradson (who appears in ONE SINGLE live show) is a real character in this (albeit a minor one). Johann feels so real, and this fic makes me care about him so much and wish that that major character death warning wasn't there. This fic also has probably the best Lucretia voice I've read; it perfectly captures her dry, elegant tone and absolutely batshit McElroy humor (Lucretia "point and click, baby, windows 98" The Director, ladies and gentlemen).
