Ex-JAMB Registrar Oloyede Urges Kwara Universities to Find Solutions to Socio-Economic Challenges Former Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has urged universities in Kwara State to become a major force for addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges through research, innovation and evidence-based solutions. Oloyede, who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Consortium of Universities in Kwara State (KU8+), made the call at the opening of the fourth KU8+ Conference held at Summit University, Offa. The ex-JAMB Registrar challenged universities to move beyond teaching and awarding degrees by actively contributing to policymaking and developing practical solutions to challenges affecting their host communities. He also urged Kwara universities to collaborate with agricultural research institutions in the state to improve agricultural productivity, food security and economic growth. Oloyede further called on the institutions to explore ways of reviving industries such as the Bacita Sugar Company and Jebba Paper Mill, whose decline has affected Kwara’s industrial and economic development. Meanwhile, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, called for the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence hub under KU8+ to develop AI solutions tailored to Africa’s needs. The conference also featured calls for stronger academic collaboration, including a credit transfer system that would allow students to move more easily among member universities. ABSU Suspends Professor Over Facebook Posts on Lecturers’ Welfare The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has suspended Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze of the Department of Economics over comments he made on Facebook concerning the welfare and salaries of lecturers at the institution. The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Nwogu, on Thursday, August 13, 2026. According to the university, the action followed social media posts attributed to the professor which management considered inimical to the interests of the university and uncomplimentary to its Visitor. Professor Nwaeze had alleged that lecturers at ABSU were among the least-paid university lecturers in Nigeria, while also raising concerns about the non-implementation of certain salary structures, unpaid salary arrears and other welfare-related issues. He further alleged that some professors at the institution earn less than ₦400,000 monthly and compared their earnings with those of commercial tricycle operators.
