I used an NBC News video for NASA, NBC News, and WESH look back at 2025 and ahead to 2026 in space. Same people and updated.

I found a video with better quality for 'The Year of the Dragon' from The Cadets and Sacramento Mandarins for a drum corps Lunar New Year.

Mandarin: Gong Xi Fa Cai/Xin Nian Kuai Le

Cantonese: Kung Hei Fat Choi

Hokkien (Fujian/Taiwanese): Kiong Hee Huat Tsai/Sin Ni khòai lok

Simplified Chinese: 恭喜发财 新年快乐

Traditional Chinese: 恭喜發財 新年快樂

I had better videos to use for Vox and CNBC explain 'Why China's population is shrinking' and 'What [it] Means For The Global Economy'.

I rejected the following video in favor of two American local news station videos for Happy Year of the Water Rabbit! Just the same, happy Lunar New Year!

I decided I didn't need the following video in China's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for Earth Day, a Flashback Friday special; I had two good ones already.

I decided against posting a science and space entry featuring Elon Musk on "Saturday Night Live," instead posting NASA and '60 Minutes' explore the contributions of Asian-Americans to the Mars mission of Perseverance and Ingenuity, so I didn't use this clip.

From The Infographics Shows asks why are we afraid of Friday the 13th and the number 13? at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

There are cultures that don't share our fear of the number 13 in general and Friday the 13th in particular, although they also have unlucky numbers. I don't know of many Americans who think 4 is an unlucky number like the Chinese do, for example. There's a reason for that superstition that The Infographics Show does not mention. The word for four sounds like the word for death in Mandarin and other east Asian languages. This means April the 4th is considered unlucky. Hmm.

I hereby christen today Tetraphobia Day.

Time to resume my series of saved comments.  Tomorrow, I'm going to post some saved links.

sustainability_spheres

In the previous digest, I promised "global and national environmental issues, local (Michigan and Metro Detroit) sustainability issues, and Tea Party screw-ups." I'll do the first one, as I just posted an entry on that general topic.

Next Media Animation on the Keystone XL pipeline

Next Media Animation on Thanksgiving food inflation

Phil Plait on saving Earth from asteroids

Nebris and I have a conversation

A video gift from a student

Yes, I posted that one before. It's worth seeing again. Besides, I'm an environmentalist; I recycle.

The village of Wukan, China, in open revolt

The situation in Wukan escalates

More paranoia about Agenda 21

You'll see this one again, as it's about Tea Partiers screwing up.

Next Media Animation thinks low birth rates in the U.S. and China aren't all good

Next Media Animation on Canada leaving the Kyoto Protocol, plus a Rick Perry joke

With that last entry, the topics complete the circle, as the first and last are about Canadian tar sands.

A Chinese ratings firm yesterday made financial history and downgraded the US' credit rating from A+ to A. Meanwhile, hot money flowing into hedge funds and gold saw gold prices yesterday shoot to a historic high of US$1,670 per ounce.
It looks like the Chinese think the deal was a Satan Sandwich, too, and that we should have chosen the prize behind Door #3 instead.

I've been busy over at Crazy Eddie's Motie News following the local library situation.

More metro Detroit library news for May 2011

An update on library access for Bloomfield Hills

I'll be combining these two entries and posting the result on Daily Kos and Michigan Liberal. I'll keep you all updated.

I also have posts on sustainability news, including a special post about the U.S.-China relationship entitled U.S.-China EcoPartnerships: The CoDominion plans for sustainability. I plan on excerpting and editing those for posting as well, maybe.

Art Info: China Steps Up Its Cyberwar on Change.org

Apparently, now China is trying to shut down free speech outside its borders as well as within.

On Tuesday, we reported that the Web site Change.org, which is hosting a petition for the release of detained artist Ai Weiwei, stated that it was facing “highly sophisticated denial of service attacks from locations in China,” and that it was appealing to the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of East Asian Pacific Affairs for help. Well, the latest news is that the attacks haven’t stopped — they have only escalated, and the site says that it has engineers “working around the clock to fend off the attacks.” Below, find the complete text of Change.org’s message sent out to supporters today (in this case, our own ace associate editor Emma Allen) to update them on the situation:

Email behind the cut )
As far as I can tell, Amazon.com hosts Change.org, along with a whole bunch of other sites. As a result, a whole bunch of domains are off-line, as documented in Amazon servers take down Reddit, Foursquare, and more. I tried to copy and paste the article, but LJ hiccoughed and wouldn't accept it. Darn.

Above crossposted to we_love_nebris on LJ and ontd_political on both Dreamwidth and on LJ.
