When Cody and Ford pulled up, Klavier and Tempo bolted out of the house.

Apollo had met Cody a few times before. He was a frat boy type, and Apollo wasn't too thrilled by the idea of spending the week with him. He acted much younger than he was and not in the way Klavier and Tempo did, which made them vulnerable and whiney and a bit cute. Cody seemed obsessed with living out his early 20s forever despite Apollo knowing he was months away from turning 30. He enjoyed making messes he wouldn’t have to clean up. He liked playing protector of his younger bandmates.

Apollo began seeing the fun of being engaged to a celebrity the first month of publicly being Klavier Gavin’s fiance. It could have been because, at home, Klavier was a normal person. Normal-ish. He poured over case files and suggested ordering cheap take-out when they were both too tired to cook after long trials. He burned toast when he was drowsily making breakfast. He had morning breath, he sometimes left his dirty laundry on the floor right next to the hamper, and he was prone to laying books and reports all over the house with strict instructions to Apollo to not touch. He had a system only he understood.

Klavier Gavin was capable of living a normal life 90% of the time. Apollo cherished that 90%. He needed the 90% to recover from the 10% that was full of parties and dinners and things normal people didn’t do. Klavier owed his company to some people—producers, old friends, former bandmates that were left just as shocked as he was in the aftermath of their breakup.

In the end, Phoenix walked away with silver.

Mia had screamed and hugged him. Maya, still hanging around, joined in the jumping and cheering even though the weight of the situation was lost on her. Phoenix had picked her up and spun her around while the cameras caught his reaction.

A 278.95 was much higher than he could have dreamed of. It didn’t come close to Miles’ 294.28. He hadn’t clawed his way up to gold like Mia thought he could, but it was okay. Silver was good—better than good. It was amazing.

And Phoenix could stand next to Miles on the podium and take a moment to stare up at him and his shiny gold. If it were a little quieter, if Miles actually wanted to acknowledge someone else’s existence while up there, Phoenix would have congratulated him. His free skate really was amazing. He had chosen songs from Faust, the perfect end to his demonic theme. Of course, Phoenix already saw it in the Grand Prix. Though, he did enjoy it more on TV than having to watch it after Miles blanked him.

The day that Phoenix was set to skate in the senior men’s short program, he met Maya Fey.

Mia was waiting with her in the hotel lobby, already set to go to the rink. She was in one of the suits she always wore for competitions since she started coaching, bundled up in a trenchcoat and gloves and a scarf. She was ready for the January temperatures, and she was ready for the cold of the arena.

“Nervous?” she asked.

“Just a little.”

His stomach was set in a very tight knot. He got just enough sleep to not be totally exhausted, and he ate just enough breakfast to not collapse on the ice during warm-ups. But the young girl at Mia’s side made him forget about his nerves for a second.

The fluorescent lights made Miles look sicker than he had all night. The dark circles under his eyes were more pronounced. His skin had turned gray with a sickly, sweaty sheen to it. Every tangle and fly away hair was visible.

His coughing even sounded louder, the room suffocating any other noise. A nurse, a serious-looking woman maybe around middle age, kept a hand on his arm until he caught his breath—his wheezy, painful-sounding breath.

Lana stood close by as the nurse swiped a thermometer across his forehead. Mia sat behind them, the designated jacket and purse holder of the evening.

“104.3,” the nurse said, barely reacting to what made Lana’s stomach sink. “Go ahead and get into this gown, get comfortable for the night, and I’ll come back in a minute, okay?”

The gown in question sat next to Miles and got a confused look from him as if he couldn’t remember how to change clothes. The nurse seemed to understand.

“Can your friend get you changed?” the nurse asked, speaking gentler than she had before. “Or would you rather have me help?”

It was Friday afternoon by the time Lana knocked on Miles’ front door, holding a thermos of soup and smiling.

Miles stood in his doorway, squinting at her. He wore his pajamas still—a comfortable set of flannel bottoms and a large t-shirt that hung off of his scrawny frame—and his hair was ruffled and messy. Lana could see how it stuck up in the back while the fringe had become frizzy and laid flat against his face.

“I thought I’d check up on you,” Lana said. “And bring you soup.”

“That was… thoughtful.” His voice was hoarse, and it sounded like he strained to get the few words out.

He would have looked adorable if there wasn’t a worrying flush to his face and glassiness over his eyes. But he did look younger than Lana had ever seen him. And smaller. If Lana didn’t know any better, she would have assumed he was a teenager taking a day off school.

She just had to take care of him. She couldn’t leave a sick child home alone.

“Mind if I come in?”

Miles had met Lana Skye a handful of times. They had worked together on a few cases, and he often saw her around the prosecutor’s office. Miles was always impressed by her. She was put-together and smart and, most importantly, she was patient with him. And deep down, he appreciated that.

Lana seemed to know what Miles needed when not even he knew. She was the only person to cut him off when he got snappy with the other detectives, to privately suggest that he take a second to collect himself before returning to meetings or investigations. And, embarrassed, he would do as she said. He would step away and remind himself to be professional if only for Lana’s sake. She would thank him and praise him when he finished work in a significantly better temperament, and he would try to brush it off.

She never snapped at him. She never humiliated him in front of colleagues. It seemed that she was genuinely interested in helping him.

That was why he emailed her to ask if they could look through old case files together, and that was why he found himself in her and Gant’s office on his way to see Mia in the middle of the week.

“But you didn’t get a guilty verdict? That’s what I’m asking you.”

“I don’t know what else I could have done. The defendant killed himself.”

“It should have never reached that point. It should have been an easy win in a matter of minutes—you had everything you needed.”

“It was Mia Fey who—”

Von Karma slammed his hands down on his desk. It echoed through the room that stretched on for miles into white nothingness. Edgeworth flinched. There was a gust of wind that made his hair flutter.

He was so small compared to his mentor behind his mammoth of a desk. Von Karma sat far above him and leered down with a heavy scowl.
