Today we had a pumpkin-carving contest in our department. Since we have a small lab, we teamed up with another lab to play, and we won third prize! Many people thought we should have been first.

Lookit! )

Pretty sweet, y/n? Is a scary dragon-thing. Never say scientists don't have some right-brain skillz, too! I barely helped, apart from the initial gutting of the pumpkin (I have Skills when it comes to raking the seeds out of things. It's a legacy from being the fruit salad slinger at Sobeys for couple summers.)

:D?

Also, there were some very good costumes today. One of the guys in my lab had a very excellent Jesus costume which was very fun. Another lab dressed up AWESOMELY as the Fellowship of the Ring. Not only were the costumes fantastically detailed, but the heights even worked out (four of the girls were about a foot or more shorter than the rest of the lab.) Needless to say, they won the group prize. I'm hoping pictures pop up on the dept site.

Hi, I ate a lot of candy. :D

Hi! I have some links for you, only one of them fannish but all of them, I think, varying degrees of cool.

First, SCIENCE. Astronomy, actually.

'Ribbon' found at edge of solar system. Yay for unexpected things in space! The solar system has a bow wave of some kind? \o? Also bonus cool: they can still track the Voyagers even though they are waaaaaaaaaay out there. Woot.

32 new planets found. Great success! Imagine how many little rock planets there are below the detection threshold. I predict 4.534565x1019. You heard it here first. It's like those "guess how many gumballs in the jar" things.

Second, Toronto!

Toronto to host World Pride 2014. Yay! Guess I know where I'm going for Canada Day in five years. :D

NB: It is NOT in any way worth your while to read the comments on the CBC articles. It will crush your faith in Canada, and humanity in general.

Third, epic pwnage:

This pdf of the smackdown of that crazypants Orly Taitz. Simultaneously an epic, scathing "bitch, please," and a prime example of how 40-odd pages formal legalese can be beautiful.

Fourth, Paul Fucking Gross!

From here:

on set in Montreal to shoot cameos in the upcoming feature film Barney's Version – the multiaward-winning filmmakers were thoroughly and gleefully humiliated by their fictitious TV producer Barney (played by Paul Giamatti) who called Egoyan's work “appalling” and Cronenberg “stupid.” Among other things.

But the verbal abuse these two men took in their cameos was nothing compared to the ribbing Paul Gross endured as he once again slipped on a red Mountie suit to do his cameo as a Due South -type law enforcer, who stars in the film's fictional TV series, O'Malley of the North.

Are you going to watch that movie? I am going to watch that movie.

... The End.

P.S. Cheddar Bits&Bites from the Bulk Barn = A+.

Hi. It's nearly Thankgiving weekend and I am bored in the lab. Poking through science things on the internet has led me to a Facebook group called "you know you've worked too long in a lab when..." which has a very amusing list that I now feel compelled to turn into a meme even though the percentage of my flist that will appreciate this is very low. I'll have to make an FB note of it for my science bitches.

But in the meantime! )

Haha, that was amusing. *dork*

I just sent off the last two bits of data needed to complete the revisions on The Paper. With a little luck it will be resubmitted and accepted very soon! A published scientist is me! \m/

We had a celebratory BBQ at the boss' house on Tuesday, which was NOM. Somehow I ended up with the greater part of the leftover chocolate-chip brownies the Minion brought. Yes!

In other news, I have a four day weekend leading to my VERY LAST WEEK at this job. I... have to organise my shit so the next peon isn't completely confused by the nonsense in my lab book.

Tomorrow morning I am heading to the cottage to go drinking with the famn damily again.

Life's a pretty sweet fruit! *g*

Tell me about things! What are you doing? Are you out West with your feet in a bucket of ice? Are you flailing about something? Do you want to leave me comment fics? Should I totally run a C6D anonymous fic meme after I'm done work and into the PACKING phase of this summer? Should I make a picspam? Give me your thoughts!

1. It is really, really rainy and I do not like that. No, I do not.

2. It doesn't seem right that I have to pay $6.80 to liberate my own birthday present from the post office.

3. But I got a card in the mail from [personal profile] queue! It was pretty and ♥.

4. I saw [personal profile] nos! She's still alive! And in danger of getting completely turned around whilst driving. She really needs a GPS. We should donate one so she doesn't end up lost in the Muskokas somewhere.

[livejournal.com profile] scarfe soundly beat me at Battleship, then sold a whack of NBX figurines to a friend of mine (who hung out for a while -- it was like my worlds colliding!) and then Nos and scarfe and I went to see a movie, because you can only party so hard on a Wednesday night.

Which leads to!

4. I am, like, the only person left on the internets who hasn't given their thoughts on Star Trek already. But late isn't never! )

5. There was also some amusing linky, via said scarfe: My Favourite Movie, which is spoilery for ST, and, unrealted, Transforminators, which is not spoileery for either of the movies concerned since it's made of trailers.

6. Okay. Time for perogies and slowly reading my way up from skip=100.

7. And oh, I'm a stupidhead who nearly forgot to add a happy birthday ot [personal profile] akamine_chan! I hope everything is super-awesome.

Tonight I can has an [personal profile] nos! And also a [livejournal.com profile] scarfe! Nos is back from the hinterlands and coming to get me after work. We will go to Nostown for dinner and then (finally!) the watching of Star Trek. Woot. It's a bit silly for me to go there rather than have them come up, but whatever. Nos apparently loves me enough to make the extra drive. :P

In other news, Callum is going to be in Paul's project, Gunless. Which is really kind of awesome Posse-leader!Callum hunting outlaw!Paul will almost certainly involve, uh, tension, amirite? *g* Many hijinks, anyway, since it's a comedy.

Hi! Hi. I am back from my weekend of birthdaying. Apart from early Saturday, it was appropriately drunken and gluttonous, though most of that was my family. (Hey, Meres, what'd you do on your birthday? Oh, I got drunk with my family.) Man, those people can pack it away. Good times. There were seventeen of us in one tiny cottage, being crazy. (On Saturday at lunch, there were roughly thirty, which is not even half the crowd we could have pulled.)

For the epic win, I was at the beach!

Pics! )

It was cold and windy all weekend, which was not of the win. But there were good times! And we played a lot of cards. My family is the only family I know that goes to a bar for lunch and then settles in for about three tables worth of Euchre. We are always equipped with cards!

We also played Things, which... if you have never played that with your family, it is hilarious and wrong. And we tried to go bowling last night but that didn't work out because apparently bowling closes at 10pm up there. Whatevs. We went back to the cottage for more drinking and like 23453 kinds of Mennonite pie and there was a point where I was obliged to point out to my family that The Internet Is Serious Business.

Anyway, I got many cards and hugs and some nice jewellery from the mom and many, many drinks bought for me, including several pints of Peeler cider which is the bestest. Yay!

On the internets, I got a virtual cupcake! And nice comments and many posts! And the fic what Nos started for me for last year's birthday, which is Epic and will take me a while to read but YAY. And [personal profile] sionnain wrote me this fic which I also must read, yay! [personal profile] secretlybronte wrote me a very nice entry that made me giggle. *hearts the flist*

Calling everyone who was in primary or secondary school in the 80s and 90s and played terrible video games on fabulous units like these ICONS (or not because aparently those were only in Ontario: WHO KNEW? They had ROLLERBALLS for a mouse, man. Look at this thing.)

Let's talk about video games!

All you American kids talk about Oregon Trail and stuff, but does anyone besides me remember the fabulousness of the Christopher Columbus game? I don't even know its actual name, but it was hours of fun in GLORIOUS 8 BIT COLOUR and I sank my ships a lot? Hrm, maybe it wasn't even on the Icons. I remember trying to discover the West Indies a lot in Grade Three, anyway.

The Offshore Fishing game sure was awesome, though. It had a fish-detector and everything...

Where was I going with this? Hm. IDK. Name me your most favourite antiquated computer games, dudes. Bonus points if you had to use DOS. /dooork
meresy: (Toronto: African War Memorial)
Check it out, last night [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9 and [livejournal.com profile] primroseburrows and I got to see Paul talk about the State of the Arts and stuff in a lecture hall with only about 150 other people. ROCK.

As Nos has reported, he was pretty and fantastical, despite a Captain Obvious mod guy and deeply bad audio. The school was photographing and filming the lecture, probably for their own edification, but keep an eye on the interweb for that. You never know. My alma mater does podcasts of President's discussions, so. In the meantime I have about 26 minutes of shaky, blurry video for y'all that I'll upload tonight in some fashion. The audio is hearable, if riddled with the clicking of my zoom button and my giggles. But! You can see Paul and his gestures as well. \m/

Things Paul talked about )

So, in conclusion, Paul is terribly thinky and adorable with the flaily gestures, and very gracious and intelligent when responding to Captain Obvious and students. Also, he needs a haircut. We three didn't hang around to bother the guy, being shy fangirls all. The ladies in front of us totally had magazines and copies of the Passchendaele novel to sign. I sort of laughed at them even though I totally had my premiere ticket stub in my wallet JUST IN CASE. Oh, you would, too, shh.

Also, he's going to be on The Hour on the 27th! Nos, we should see about going to THAT, y/y?

I think so!

Nos and I are thinking of going to go see Paul! Because we can, and he will be there being all thinky and lectury and HIMSELF and also is it free but for the cost of a bus ride, so why the hell wouldn't we go? It'll be our second time watching him speak, too. Win!

It's on a Wednesday, but if the weather and Greyhound cooperate it is totes doable. *enjoys not for the first time being within a reasonable distance of the Tdot*

So, yes, Nos, I would totally go with you to that.

Paaaaaaaaaaaul! :D

And hearts.

[livejournal.com profile] zabira wants to know what the BEST TIMES were. It was supposed to be five, but the flist has upgraded it to ten. Since Z is my fandom wife, I'm required to do her meme. I already commented on her entry, but I thought I'd repost the list, plus some more...

In no particular order, and in no way comprehensive... )

- I'm starting to digress now. :D?

So yesterday afternoon my BFF arrived to hang out. YAY! I convinced her to watch the BSG miniseries with me, which we got partway through before we had to leave to make our dinner reservation at our favourite restaurant. I had the world's best Caesar salad and red West African chicken curry and dark chocolate mousse with raspberries om nom nom. Then we went around the corner to our most favourite martini bar, where I drank a Riviera and a Red Candy Apple and had monkey dumplings for second dessert. Most excellent. The bar was so crowded, though. Fortunately the martini bar doesn't draw the student crowd much, but that night there were two birthday parties going on. Crazy!

We got back to my place and watched the rest of BSG, which the BFF quite enjoyed. \m/ We also talked, variously, about Blindness, which she wanted to hear about, and about the excellence of Paul Gross (conclusion: we endorse him.) She intends to see Passchendaele while it's still running.

Slowly! I am turning her into a fangirl, I think. \m/

You guys should all be reading Newsweek's Secrets of the 2008 Campaign if you're not already. It's interesting and gossipy and really rather like reading an episode of the West Wing. Only in real life.

*waits for Chapter 7*
meresy: (Default)
I has no more Nos. :( But it was good to have her for a night! Not that we got up to much, besides a dinner out and going to see a movie we'd already seen (still good) and putting in our ten bucks on opening weekend so Paul Gross doesn't cry. We also talked about fandom stuff, which is always nice, and non-fandom stuff about which I am a major dork. I'm not quite sure why Nos lets me ramble on so much. :P Next time I think it's my turn to visit, though. Gotta go harass the cat. :D

Nos gave me a housewarming-ish present! [livejournal.com profile] scarfe located a store that sells the Giant Microbes and hooked me up with MRSA, Herpes Simplex 2, and Epstein-Barr Virus. Yay! That rounds out my collection nicely. (I already had E. coli, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Trypanosoma brucei, Orthomyxovirus, Poliovirus, Hepatitis and HIV. All in cute little plushie form. Yay!) (ETA: Ohman, I want the T4 bacteriophage so bad. SO bad. /doooork)

Now I'm watching BSG. Coincidentally, the ep I'm on is A Measure of Salvation. Yay, pathogens!

This here contains random shots of the city in which no actual fangirls appear. Those pics will be along in another post under a filter (CanCon only). Much as there are some folks on my flist I'd love to share any and all photos with, I have to keep them back for the comfort of the other fangirls in said photos, gnome sane? And it's just too complicated to run a spreadsheet of who precisely can be shown to whom. Sorry, dudes.

Anyhow.

Hi, flist! *waves*

I just got back from Toronto where I spend the afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9, [livejournal.com profile] bohemian__storm and [livejournal.com profile] primroseburrows and her son. We went to a nice little cafe and had yummy sandwiches and pizzas and the world's most bored waiter. Oh, and massive pieces of chocolate cake.

I think we were supposed to be thinking about Can Con things, but mostly we just talked fic and fandom and RPing and generally bored Prim's son to tears. He peeled off in search of a bar, since he's legal to drink here, while we parked it in a Second Cup and yakked. *g*

Very unproductive, but good times! I am very sleepy Meres, though. All the bus riding. *zzzz*

Tomorrow is Monday. Blah.

ETA because I fail: This weekend was also the occasion of the births of our very own [livejournal.com profile] slidellra and [livejournal.com profile] callumvixen, who are both total rockstars and awesome me regularly. I know you had a rocktastic squee-filled weekend, which means at least some things are right with the universe. Happy birthday! \♥/

Dudes! Duuuuuuuuuudes!

It is fate. Someone is running a Hard Core Logo Tribute Night in Roncesvalles on Thursday, August 14th. HCL in theatre! (Again!) And Bruce will be there!

I am so fucking going. I am taking [livejournal.com profile] zabira (who showed me this, because she is a rockstar), any other nearby fangirls, and I am there like nobody's business.

So, check it out! It is More Joy Day again, and my tabs are getting out of hand! I amd feeling very joyful today. There is a lot of squee on my flist! [livejournal.com profile] vsee sent me a daisy, and I got an anonymous polar bear! [livejournal.com profile] _unhurt_ made a whole post about my other other tv boyfriend!. YAY!

I'm not very organised at all. I don't really have anything fannish prepared, though I WILL try to get my BDtH picspam winnowed for posting by the end of the day. Jeez, I've had since the end of March to do that! What gives, Meres? Falling down on the picspam job, I am.

What I DO have is a whole tonne of pictures from my Pride/Canada Day weekend with Nos! That is joyful, right? Right!

Onward! To a connection-breaking number of pics! )

If you got all the way through that, I salute you. Now I must eat. Then maybe more picspam.
