The results of yesterday's polls have confirmed that 2) [personal profile] sionnain and her prepositionally-challenged compatriots are wrong in real life and b) that I will no longer the x-posting regularly to Dreamwidth. That means if you wish to read my randomsauce, LJ is where to do it. I will probably import every so often because backup is good.

In unrelated news: I keep getting emails about the deptartment formal Christmas party, which some innocent has dubbed the "Snow Ball." Because I live in the gutter I cannot help snickering every time I read this. I just. I'm sorry, I have maturity issues.

ETA: And if you didn't see it already, The Flowchart of Manpain. Very helpful in determining if you or your characters have that ~*~special~*~ brand of Angst(tm).

Hi, I have very serious polls for you, here. Very serious.

Clicky! )

In non-poll news, my aunt and uncle just bought the most refriggingDICULOUS 1.3 million dollar home in Vancouver. Next year, when they're all moved and stuff I am SO visiting. Maybe I can go there in advance of/after BP, y/n? If I'm going to spend a bajillion getting out there, might as well take proper time off...

... to keep scientists from going even MADDER when they have to pull 12-hour workdays for experiments. Like I am doing. Right now. I am here till after 9pm and I am boooored. Bored. Waiting for things to go boink so I can take readings every hour. Science is not exciting, okay. Results are exciting, but the science? Is not.

Entertain me, flist! Or at least tell me you're doing something more interesting with your Friday night than I am.

In other news, there is this )

The fax don't get any truer than that. I love despair.com. Geniuses there.

Ohai! Have a list of random things:

1. I am at home right now drinking pre-mixed maragarita and eating peanut butter cups because I left the lab early. Tomorrow is a 12-hour day so I totally deserve it! And the prof is in California and not around to give a crap.

2. The weather is so nice!

3. Dear writers,

So, hey I've been noticing this thing in fanfiction and news articles where people mention, say, food-borne illnesses, and then get the bacterial nomenclature all wrong. To wit: Escherichia coli may be shortened to E. coli, but should always be emphasized or underlined. The genus gets a capital letter, and may not be omitted because a species name without its genus is a) nonsense and b) a naked epithet. "e. coli" is not right and makes baby bacteriologists cry. Similarly dismaying: "salmonella." I mean I guess one can get away with the genus only in non-scientific writing, but let's at least capitalize it. :D? Same really goes for any formal species names.

Italics are your friends.

Love, Meres

4. Tonight is SPN night wheeee! I can has a [personal profile] nos.

5. Uh. That's about it. I'm the boringest boring person to ever boring. Who still loves me?

HI GUYS. It's Friday! An actual nice Friday with sun and stuff! I might walk part of the way home tonight, since this is the kind of fall-cold weather I like and we've gotten so little. Yay!

Also, my prof is leaving for a week-long workshop conference in the US this weekend, so there is no group meeting today, woot. He's really very evil with requiring group meeting at 3pm on Fridays, but we've gotten out of it two weeks in a row, now, HA.

Last night I had a strange dream that I found a little orange-and-white kitten under a tree. I was pretty sure she belonged to someone else, but someone had put a collar on her that was... wrong, somehow, in the dream. Anyway I didn't like it so I took the kitty home with me. I was going to name her Rosalind (because I want two cats and I am going to name them Rosalind and Franklin okay.) Then somehow that crazy dream thing happened where things become other things, and suddenly it was more like I'd taken in a kid than a cat? There was reading of board books. IDEK.

I should adopt actual cats. *nods*

Also last evening I had a [personal profile] nos! We hung out and watched SPN for the first time in a little while, since Nos is a very busy person. There was a lot of giggling 5x08 stuff )

Um. I think that's all I've got. White Collar tonight :D? :D? :D? Even though I don't get USA and Bravo is a week behind. The internet will provide.

Instead of Halloween anything, I stayed home tonight and watched TV and read fic a lot. Yay, me! Tomorrow I am headed to [personal profile] nos's for movies and candy, though. I might attempt stealing her cat again (he is so wee! And fuzzy and snuggly! I loff him.)

ANYWAY. So, I heard a few people talk about White Collar on my flist this past week, and randomly it was on Bravo today after Practical Magic (...shut up) so I checked it out. It was amusing! And very, very slashy omg. Just... Neal. He's very... *hands* Hee. Also Peter/Neal/Elizabeth OT3 of awesome y/y/definitely?

Oh, and! SPN 5x07 not-very-spoilery thoughts )

Then Hugh Dillon on The Hour with myboyfriendGeorge. NEITHER CAPSLOCK NOR WORDS OR BOTH CAN FULLY CONVEY MY LOVE. I CAN'T EVEN. BOOOOOOOYS. I... was kind of shipping them just a little. A little! Because how fucking adorkable can they BE before you just have to? Whatever. RPS epics have been built on FAR less okay.

Hi. *beams toothily and goes hunting for White Collar fic* Oooh, a SPN crossover...

Today we had a pumpkin-carving contest in our department. Since we have a small lab, we teamed up with another lab to play, and we won third prize! Many people thought we should have been first.

Lookit! )

Pretty sweet, y/n? Is a scary dragon-thing. Never say scientists don't have some right-brain skillz, too! I barely helped, apart from the initial gutting of the pumpkin (I have Skills when it comes to raking the seeds out of things. It's a legacy from being the fruit salad slinger at Sobeys for couple summers.)

:D?

Also, there were some very good costumes today. One of the guys in my lab had a very excellent Jesus costume which was very fun. Another lab dressed up AWESOMELY as the Fellowship of the Ring. Not only were the costumes fantastically detailed, but the heights even worked out (four of the girls were about a foot or more shorter than the rest of the lab.) Needless to say, they won the group prize. I'm hoping pictures pop up on the dept site.

Hi, I ate a lot of candy. :D

So I ran across an article today: Toronto water has drug-resistant bacteria, and promptly clicked on it because it is Relevant To My Interests.

Bacteriology and out-of-context theatre do not mix )

In conclusion, CBC does not report science/health news in the rigorous fashion I have come to expect from undergraduate lab reports or things I read on the department bulletin board. :P Also the commenter hivemind does not know bacterial genetics from a kick in the head.

Hugh Dillon is going to be on The Hour again. I just got a taping notice for the 28th and I'd REALLY like to go to that except for how it's a Wednesday and I have, like school to do in the week.

Le sigh. Someone else go and tell him we love him!

I will totes watch this when it airs, though, yaye!

Hi! I have some links for you, only one of them fannish but all of them, I think, varying degrees of cool.

First, SCIENCE. Astronomy, actually.

'Ribbon' found at edge of solar system. Yay for unexpected things in space! The solar system has a bow wave of some kind? \o? Also bonus cool: they can still track the Voyagers even though they are waaaaaaaaaay out there. Woot.

32 new planets found. Great success! Imagine how many little rock planets there are below the detection threshold. I predict 4.534565x1019. You heard it here first. It's like those "guess how many gumballs in the jar" things.

Second, Toronto!

Toronto to host World Pride 2014. Yay! Guess I know where I'm going for Canada Day in five years. :D

NB: It is NOT in any way worth your while to read the comments on the CBC articles. It will crush your faith in Canada, and humanity in general.

Third, epic pwnage:

This pdf of the smackdown of that crazypants Orly Taitz. Simultaneously an epic, scathing "bitch, please," and a prime example of how 40-odd pages formal legalese can be beautiful.

Fourth, Paul Fucking Gross!

From here:

on set in Montreal to shoot cameos in the upcoming feature film Barney's Version – the multiaward-winning filmmakers were thoroughly and gleefully humiliated by their fictitious TV producer Barney (played by Paul Giamatti) who called Egoyan's work “appalling” and Cronenberg “stupid.” Among other things.

But the verbal abuse these two men took in their cameos was nothing compared to the ribbing Paul Gross endured as he once again slipped on a red Mountie suit to do his cameo as a Due South -type law enforcer, who stars in the film's fictional TV series, O'Malley of the North.

Are you going to watch that movie? I am going to watch that movie.

... The End.

P.S. Cheddar Bits&Bites from the Bulk Barn = A+.

Um, hi! It is Sunday. That's not as good as Saturday but I'll take it.

This very exciting weekend has so far included:

- cleaning my apartment

- my first real cooking attempt in a while (yay!)

- trying to ignore the embarrassingly loud sexcapades of the downstairs neighbour

- staring into space thinking about my research project (my lab meeting presentation on Friday revealed that it is possibly more risky than I'd envisioned, since I'm going to have to do so much of the basic biochemistry myself and goddamn you inadequate Swedish background papers from the nineties! Give me more to work with.) Ahem.

- it's also about 1C outside according to my weather widget, and I have a window open. It's so sunny and nice out! I love this weather.

So yeah. I have also been watching a lot of ye olde MST3K for my own amusement. It's entirely possible that this is still one of the most hilarious things of all time. To me, it's funny! Oh, terrible 80s scifi, you complete me.

Also, I forgot to share this gem of Youtube hilarity that my brother showed me last weekend. Basically some internet hero has taken Billy Mays' infomercial spots and dubbed over them in a hilarious and inappropriate manner. The Kaboom dub is the best one. (NSFW audio okay, and also crude humour. And capable of making you die from laughing if you are 12 years old like me.)

Fannish:

- Been reading a loooooot of SPN fic. Once again I am fantastically late to the party. Way to be, self.

- Tell me, should I be watching Eastwick or will it cause me to run in fear? I have a large embarrassment problem when it comes to Paul. (Paul, ilu bb, but you are just... *hands* sometimes.)

- Have to beta a long fic for [personal profile] sionnain. I will try my bestest to get it back to you tonight as requested. Um, if I don't, don't hate me? <3? Ahaha, finished and sent! ♥

Hey home skillets,

So, Thanksgiving has got me thinking about cooking -- mainly, how I don't. It's part laziness, part lack of experience, part logistics. (How did I get this far living alone without cooking much? The answer is I'm a bageltarian and you don't want to know). Cooking for one is daunting, a) because I have this apprehension about spending money on things that will go bad/I'll never use again and also because b) I have a... special relationship with what I deem "leftovers" which is slightly different from what other people would call leftovers). I don't like them. IDK, it's not exactly rational, but after about a day, fridge or freezer, I don't want to be eating something, and some things DON'T freeze well, "make many portions" be damned.

So, I was wondering if any of you with experience at feeding yourself properly have recipes or book/blog recs you could share me? Think beginner-level, 1-2 portions, easy/fast to make (see above re: grad student.) I'm mostly looking for dinner-type things, but if you most faaaaavourite is some kind of sweet I am not opposed to that.

For your guidance:

Things Meres likes especially )

Things Meres Does Not Want )

Hm. Probably not comprehensive, but the major items are there.

Hi. It's nearly Thankgiving weekend and I am bored in the lab. Poking through science things on the internet has led me to a Facebook group called "you know you've worked too long in a lab when..." which has a very amusing list that I now feel compelled to turn into a meme even though the percentage of my flist that will appreciate this is very low. I'll have to make an FB note of it for my science bitches.

But in the meantime! )

Haha, that was amusing. *dork*

Hi! Seems I have not posted yet this month, so here you go!

1. Life and school is kind of hampering my fannish activity. The brain is in a biochemistry place, and while I am still reading the flist and plenty of fic I'm not actually up to much. Sorry! D: I know I promised a fic meme long ago, and it will happen some day, but right now I have protocols to write.

1b. Of course, my current amusement, Supernatural, is not something I'm inclined to do anything but read in, so there's that.

2. Other news: this still makes me grin all dopey. Because eeeeee, flisties met Callum! And he was lovely! ♥!

3. Actual news: one of the many reasons I heart Canada that occasionally stuff like this happens. Which... oookay.

4. Nobel Prizes! Who else is following the Nobel announcements? :D? :D? So far I am nodding right along with the choices. And one of the Physics winners is Canadian! Way to invent digital cameras, dude. And Ramakrishnan, Steitz and Yonath winning the Chemistry prize for the stucture of the ribosome is super awesome because I have read a LOT about that and it's cool to see research I know about be the winnar.

5. \o/:I had a surprise![personal profile] nos over last night for dinner. Yay me! We talked about the world's problems and stuff. We are serious business. I forgot to as her about her thoughts on last week's SPN, though. I suppose I shall hear about it on Thursday. :D

6. Argh: I nearly fucked up the lab printer for everyone a moment ago. FML, and whatever Macs are easier to use and throw fewer errors than PCs. At least when I bork my device networking at home restarting things actually works. Telling me the printer is "stopped" but not allowing me to un-stop it? Not on, Mac. Not on.

7. No value to anyone but me: I finally found a download of an obscure dance song I've been hunting for for YEARS. Sweet.

8. Having friends in the same city as me means I go out for dinner a lot. This is not good for my chequing balance. Also I get paid monthly which is kind of balls for my budget habits.

8b. Damn you American spell-checker, "chequing" is a totally cromulent word! >:(

9. Also: Having a grocery store right across from where I live and readily available snackage? Is like being in residence again or something. I'm having my second freshman fifteen here. Argh. *makes resolve face in the general direction of the Metro bakery*

10. It's Thanksgiving this weekend, though. And the weekend after that because I have that whole bonus family thing. So much for resolve. *om nom*

Oooookay. Now is the time for work. Bye!
