One thing I find immensely helpful about Tumblr is, in the dashboard and uhhh I think one blog theme the one that every new account has by default lately, you can press J or K to go down a post or up a post respectively. This is so useful, whether to skip a long post I'm not interested in (or have seen already) or to quickly skim a bunch of posts when I'm looking for Something but I can't remember enough to tell what if any tags it had, that I wish other sites had it. Pretty please! Tumblr dot hell is a trashfire but these keyboard shortcuts are so useful ok

Because I care entirely too much about things like this: I installed the XKit extension "Alternative Timestamps", which causes dashboard posts to have timestamps both absolute ("YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm") and relative ("X [minutes/hours/days/etc] ago"), and then went allllllll the way back to the first post with a timestamp on December 17th. Subtracting the 5 pages of December 18th posts so far, there were 21 pages (210 posts) of posts for the entirety of December 17th in my timezone (EST); this is more what I expect of not checking Tumblr for 8 hours on a typical day, and even then it's on the low end.

I have no idea if my Tumblr circle was disproportionately likely to boycott the blue hellsite, but it's plausible; I'm in a very fandom-heavy circle, and I have heard tell that there are rather a lot of people who use Tumblr for like, not fandom. Well, the nature fandom, I guess, but not, like, media fandom. The parts of Tumblr I do not intersect with are alien to me. But I would be deeply interested in how much of a dip Tumblr's traffic took yesterday.

...is that while it's neither Twitter nor a Livejournal derivative, it does ok if you want to post short snappy shitposts or long rambling effortposts. I feel like with Dreamwidth I can't just make a brief post whining about how I ate about four bowlfuls of lentils-and-stuff on Saturday and then yesterday I farted all goddamn day, I have to have a minimum wordcount or post size or something.

This is of course completely untrue; I could make a post containing nothing but "F" to pay respects to the Tumblrtanic. But Dreamwidth posts are, as far as I can tell, majority or entirely what Tumblr natives would call "effortposts", this one included. It's a different culture from Tumblr, and I've spent the last... -counts on fingers- Gosh, almost 6 years learning and getting used to and going native in the Tumblr style of Doing Things On The Internet.

I'm participating in the "log-off protest" on Tumblr today; I even logged off the mobile app, although I did check that Firefox knew my password before doing so in case I care to log back on tomorrow. Tumblr is my first top site on Firefox's New Tab page, and I have to consciously remind myself "no, we're making a symbolic gesture to Tumblr involving a hopefully-alarming drop in their user traffic, do not click the button".

Transitioning from Tumblr to here and wherever else is going to be messy, and annoying, and fandom is going to splinter to hell and back and I don't know where I'm going to get my Bionicle shitposts when I care to dip my toes back into my oldest fandom because last I checked BZPower thinks PG-13 is pushing it and also is a forum and so really not a good source of Tumblr-style "scroll the tag and see what things people have flung out into the void lately" consumption of fandom.

And Bionicle is a dead fandom twice over and so Tumblr sinking might just mean we lose people as they decide it's not worth trying to get back in because the dedicated fandom is scattered all over... This isn't a problem at all unique to my old-enough-to-vote first and favorite fandom, but it's my first fandom and I love it and BZPower is eeeehhhh and r/bionicle is worse because what I care about is fanfic and flipping off the gender binarism of goddamn robots and only BZPower is good for even the first one.

And oh look, I've made a rambling effortpost anyway. Is there a point to this? Eh. Press F to pay respects to Tumblr in its maybe-death throes, I guess.

My god, I haven't posted anything on here since 2014. Not that any of that is visible, because I hid everything I posted before this because the majority of it was from when I was 16-17 and teen me embarrasses me.

Anyway, Tumblr is probably going to go down in flames and while I will be in that sinking ship until the waves consume it, I want to move the stuff I, like, care about to a platform that isn't in the middle of imploding. So this is where my long-form stuff both personal and fandom will be, probably. I dunno, I haven't had the energy for original posting on Tumblr in a while, I don't really expect this to be much better. But it might be.
