We saw the new Avatar: Fire and Ash movie this past weekend. My view: It's visually beautiful, as all the Avatar movies are, but it's at least 30 mins too long. And the first movie is still the best. A lot of rather complicated politics happen. Different groups start making strange bedfellows in their joint desire to get rid of Jake Sully and family - and even then sometimes show each other strange mercies when they could have easily killed each other. I felt like some things could have been better explained, and other parts probably dragged on a little bit too long. See it if you're already an Avatar fan; skip it if you're not.

Books:

1. Of Wicked Blood by Olivia Wildenstein & Katie Hayoz (audio). Modern (but not urban) fantasy, New Adult-ish, set in France.

I'm currently listening to The Jasad Heir, which I'd heard great things about. I like it so far, but still have a bit to go before I finish and can give more detailed pronouncements.

2. Just listened to Bujold's Penric's Demon in audio. Aww!

3. Watching Younger on Netflix, and wow, nothing dates an American show like all of the regular cast members being white. In New York. (Other than that, it's light fun and about what I'm in the mood for. Kind of like an Amy Sherman-Palladino show with less wealth porn.) Also started season 2 of The Pitt, despite intending to rewatch season 1 first.

4. (Burying the lede.) Andrew's surgery went well! We played two games of Scrabble this morning. I'm spending most of my time at the hospital.[a] Halle is confused by his absence and seeking an injunction.

[a] I've spent so long in North American fandoms that I've forgotten when we put "the" in front of "hospital", but I'm pretty sure this is one of those times, it being a specific hospital.

So I went to sleep last night, earlier than usual, and... woke up just before 3am. I don't know HOW long it took me to get back to sleep again, but I had to read for like 45 minutes before I could even try, so... :| :| :|

Clearly there is no point me trying to go to bed early unless I'm so sick I can't actually stay awake! Gah!

Anyway!

Today we went to the nearby fabric shop, and I didn't find anything there (also they are QUITE expensive, sigh), but we also went to spotlight, and I actually??? Found something I like there??? It's a purple space print, which is uh. Well. Let's be honest, it's no surprise I like it! The only way it could be more me is if it had rainbow bits!

I didn't buy it yet, though; we're gonna go to the shop A recommended tomorrow, and I'll see what I find there. But it's a distinct possibility, yesss. I suspect that either way I'll end up choosing a fabric tomorrow, hahahaha.

ALSO! We FINALLY got dates for the new windows! Next week, Wed-Thurs. SOON THEY WILL BE IN. SOOOOOON.

I decided, this year, instead of spending money on a calendar, why not print free ones from the Internet, since I have a working laser printer and can always go to the library if I need to save toner. January's was just a random January 2026 calendar page.

However, a few days ago the Internet was out for several hours, so I made a February 2026 calendar based on what my computer's calendar said the month would look like. Moreover, I spent the time to number it in the number system used on Traipah, for funsies. It's a base-6 counting system, meaning you can count really high with just two hands. I think you can count to 55 with two hands before you have to find a different way to count the 100's place. Of course, 55 in base 6 is only 35 in our standard base ten, and then 100 in base 6 is 36 in base ten. To get to 100 in base ten, you'd have to count to 244 in base 6.

Anyway, so because this February -- like most of them -- only has 28 days, that's 44 in base 6. And in the Traipahni number system, everything is reversed -- right to left. So 10 is 01, 12 is 21, 100 is 001 and so on. And they don't use the same characters to represent numbers either. The 1 looks like a capital I in a sans serif font, 2 is a V because there are two lines in a V, three is a triangle, four is a + or an X, five is a pentacle, and 0 is O. This calendar prints the Traipani numeral on top, under that is what that number means in its native base 6, and then on the bottom corner under those two is the date in base ten.

I feel like crap, and have pmuch all day. Well. The parts of the day I've been conscious, which is not many. May have eaten something stupid, or maybe it's just bodies being bodies, idk.

An idea for a story I just got from watching a video about the reasons for the Salem witch trials (it wasn't ergot, it was likely a mass panic event triggered by the pre-existing mental illness called Christianity). The idea is simple: the Devil or something like it is real (no idea about god in this story), but the Devil wasn't taking in covens of witches. No no no. What it was doing was much more subtle. In this story idea, the Devil plants the idea of witches in the minds of the "righteous," causing supposed Christians to stray from the path Jesus laid out by their paranoia snowballing into a religious panic event where "the least of these" get targeted for violence.

It's an interesting idea, I think. And I think the best way to go about it would be that none of the ideas the Devil gives people are new ideas, just he's taking pre-existing human ideas and using them to start a fire of paranoia and violence. Thus the evil is still caused by humanity, the Devil is just fanning the flames.

I'm giving this idea freely to anyone who wants to write it because there are a great many reasons I know I could not do this idea justice. I know my limitations as a writer.

I've been trying very hard to work on those resolutions I made, although I can tell my ability to limit social media time is already slipping a little. But I *am* trying to be more aware of how much time I'm spending, and when I'm starting to mindlessly scroll, I'm getting off. ( As for other resolutions )

So, anyway, most of those are still just tiny steps in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pleased with my conscious commitment to them. Two weeks down (well, nearly), only fifty left to go! :-P

In other news: I have a job!. Sort of. ( Yet another leave-of-absence position )

I had one final sub gig this morning at the K-2 school I was at two years ago, where I've stayed friends with the other specialists and have subbed for them on a regular basis since leaving my last leave-of-absence post (the grade 3-5 school) in June 2024. They kindly got me a cake to celebrate getting an actual job again. I'll miss them, though, and the school.

Next time: New Avatar movie, and the first books I finished.

I actually tried to stay up when I got up to feed the cats, but even though I'd slept through the entire night I was falling asleep sitting up, so I also had my usual morning nap. And now I'm awake at fucking 4am. I_GUESS.gif Body clearly has Opinions on when I should be awake, and who the fuck am I to try and force it otherwise when I don't have reason...

Anyway, other than Big Sleepy, I did some goddamn paperwork - apparently it was due in today, only they first sent me a notif that it needed doing on Saturday, and given that I try not to do work-related stuff on the weekend... Bleh. Still, done and not late, so that's okay. Gotta do some sort of "make your resume better" class, only you're supposed to book it via a to-do item, and that wasn't showing up, so I guess I'll just check back on the site every day until it does show up. Which is fine, just. Ugh. Why do I constantly have this kind of problem with it...

Also did some more work on the chook coop thing! We got an entire side finished! \o/ Probably coulda done more, except I was getting eaten alive by mozzies and fuck that. More tomorrow though, for sure!
