+++INTRODUCTIONS+++

1. What's your name?

Shannon

2. Do you read a lot?

Yes. Though these days most of my reading is done at a keyboard, and while I'm loving the discourse that goes on online, I think I need to dial that back a bit.

3. What's your favorite genre?

SF, retold fairy tales (which often qualify).

+++FANTASY AND SCI-FI+++

4. Do you prefer fantasy or science fiction?

Fantasy, mostly. I like science fiction, but more with the fiction and less with the science.

5. What's your favorite fantasy book/series?

Does [livejournal.com profile] pameladean's Tam Lin count? because it's my favorite book ever, so it would be my favorite fantasy book too.

6. Who's your favorite fantasy author?

There are a couple of people I've only read one of, but I've loved that one and need more, like Pamela Dean, or Charles de Lint. I'm very fond of MZB, though I know she's problematic sometimes.

7. What's your favorite science fiction book/series?

Dan Simmons' Hyperion series. I know he's problematic too, but I didn't see it in the books, and God, but I love those books.

8. Favorite sci-fi author?

Heinlein. I know, but really.

+++MYSTERY, HORROR, AND THRILLERS+++

9. Which do you prefer: a puzzling mystery, or a terrifying thriller?

My mind craves puzzles!

10. Do you have a favorite mystery novel?

Most mysteries I read are something else too. I don't think I've ever read a mystery qua mystery novel.

11. A favorite horror novel?

Does Anne Rice count? I still love the early stuff. All the back history in The Witching Hour and Queen of the Dammed makes me really happy.

+++ROMANCE+++

12. Do you read romance novels?

Not really. I read a Nora Roberts novel recently because I saw her pwn some idiots online via F_W, and she's awesome. The novel was kind of meh though. Not really my thing. Like Kass, though, I do like romantic fanfiction a lot.

13. How about gay romance novels?

Does [livejournal.com profile] ariastar's Doctor/Master slash count? Because I adore it.

14. What's your favorite?

see 13.

+++CHILDREN'S AND YA+++

15. What's your favorite children's book?

Okay, you're going to make a distinction between this and YA, right? Um, then...Where the Wild Things Are.

16. Is it the same book that was your favorite when you were a kid?

No, I don't think I actually read it as a kid.

17. What's your favorite YA book?

A Swiftly Tilting Planet.

18. Did you actually read it as a YA?

Yes. I had read A Wrinkle in Time for school in 5th grade, and by the time I was 12 or so, I had been given the Time Quartet box set by my mom's BF for either my birthday or Christmas. It was amazing. I think he might have been the one to introduce me to Pern, too.

19. In general, do you prefer children's books over grown-up books?

I love them all! DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!

+++CLASSICS AND GENERAL FICTION+++

20. What's your favorite classic novel?

What is this "classic" of which you speak? Is "classic" supposed to = not-"genre?" How dare you, sir/madam?

21. What about general fiction?

WTH? Where did these categories come from? I guess the stuff I love that's not "genre" and not "classic?" *sigh* I think you're asking about The Satanic Verses. Which I adore like an adoring thing.

22. What classic novel do you just *not* *get*?

The Catcher in the Rye. I read it late (junior year in college), and just didn't see what all the fuss was about. [livejournal.com profile] pix_kristin explained it well not too long ago in [livejournal.com profile] jonquil's comments though, and maybe she'll do it again here.

23. Do you have a favorite play or drama?

For all the time I've spent with it over the last 10 year, you'd think I'd be sick of it, but the Bakkhai. I'm also really fond of No Exit and A Streetcar named Desire.

24. What do you think of Shakespeare?

That he rocks? I mean, who doesn't?

+++POETRY+++

25. Could you pick a favorite poem?

Not really. I got to poetry kicking and screaming. it's Sister Lucina's fault.

26. What about a favorite poetry collection?

Sappho. What is extant.

27. Who's your favorite poet?

Alice Walker's poems are very good.

+++COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS+++

28. Do you read comics or graphic novels?

Yes.

That's it? No asking about authors or favorites? Who wrote this thing? it's not terribly consistent.

Sandman, Gaiman. Persepolis, Satrapi. Watchmen & V for Vendetta, Moore. I also just generally like my comics in graphic novel form. Easier to handle.

+++SHORT STORIES AND NOVELLAS+++

31. Do you prefer short stories (or short novels) over full-length novels?

No.

32. What's your favorite short story?

Erg. i don't generally read them for fun, but some of the ones I've taught include The Open Window, The Garden Party, Harrison Bergeron, The Veldt.

33. Favorite short story collection?

I've got a book of Saki. That's pretty cool.

34. Do you have a favorite short story author?

Not really.

+++NONFICTION+++

35. What kind of nonfiction do you usually read?

History, politics, Biography, crit, theory, whatever the hell you'd call Sedaris.

36. Do you have a favorite nonfiction book?

I just finished rereading Kitchen Confidential, which is great fun. Don't think I have a favorite though, no.

37. Read any interesting biographies?

What, recently? Ever? I think the last one was Katherine Graham's, and it was pretty interesting.

38. History books?

Uh-huh.

39. Politics?

Yes.

40. Religious texts?

Yup. Religion in Literature is one of my areas of acute interest.

41. How about books on mythology, fairy-tales, or other cultural stories?

Hells, yeah.

+++ELEMENTS OF FICTION+++

42. What's the most important element of a novel? Plot? Characterization? Style? Themes? Happy ending?

All of it, duh. Well, not the happy ending. That's not required, though it's nice when it works out.

43. What kind of plot interests you the most?

The twisty kind that rewards attention, and that rewards my very good instincts about what should happen. :D

44. What kind of characters usually appeal to you?

Ones like me, of course. Isn't that how it works?

But really: intelligent, sarcastic, and occasionally fucked-up. So, like I said.

45. What is your favorite book overall?

Tam Lin, hands down. It's like it was written just for me.

+++PASS IT ON+++

46. What's the last book you read?

Spiral Hunt! Woohoo! Finished it last night. But that deserves a post of its own.

47. What are you reading now?

Um, just finished two books, actually. No, wait. I'm also in the middle of Rushdie's newest-- The Enchantress of Florence, and Stephen Fry's QI book, which was a gift from [livejournal.com profile] visited. And I have to start on the Serglige Con Culainn for next week.

48. What are you going to read next?

Lots and lots of Old Irish stories, and other stuff when I have time.

49. Is there a book you would recommend to everyone on your friends list?

I can. let me know what you like.

50. Tag five people to fill out this meme:

No. People will do it if they fel like it. My friends are readers.

I don't know, but I'm glad to hear you love them too! When I teach Good & Evil at UMass, The Satanic Verses is our culminating text. We're reading Haroun and the Sea of Stories at BArT instead, but that's good too.

Did you see the graphic novel I mentioned in my meme? Rapunzel's Revenge (http://www.amazon.com/Rapunzels-Revenge-Shannon-Hale/dp/159990070X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233253325&sr=8-1), by Shannon Hale. I definitely think you'd like it. (Apparently Hale has written several traditional books involving fractured fairy tales - which I want to read now.)

I saw it, but hadn't registered yet. Do you have it? May I borrow? :D

From: [identity profile] kcobweb.livejournal.com
I don't have it - it was a library book. So I can verify that the NA library owns it. :)

Okay then.

Can you verify that I can use an Adams card at the NA library? Or would I need to do the inter-library loan thing? Or just get it at Adams, since odds are good it's there too.

Hmmmm..... you'd think I would know the answer to that - but I'm not sure. I know NA accepts all C/W MARS cards, but Adams isn't part of that system, I believe (I tend to forget that). And I'm not sure I've ever tried an Adams card on the NA system, so I don't know if it would work or not.

You might check with Adams, or try ILL.
