Hibak Barkhad Jama and Rahma Ismail spend their days having conversations most people in their community would rather avoid. They sit with relatives, neighbours and parents in Awdal region, Somaliland, and talk about FGM/C and child marriage. Practices that have decided what girls can expect there for generations. Hibak remembers one conversation with a relative who was certain that marrying girls early was how you protect them. She didn't argue. She talked about education, about the health risks of early pregnancy, about what delaying marriage opens up. Her relative didn't change their mind that day, but admitted they had never thought about it that way, and said they would encourage the girls in the family to finish school first. She calls that planting a seed. This International #YouthDay, the theme is Different Contexts, Common Aspirations. Hibak and Rahma work in a context few would envy. What they are asking for is the most ordinary thing in the world: that a girl gets to be safe, stay in school, and decide her own future. Africa doesn’t lack health innovation. So, what’s holding us back? At #AfyaFest2026 in Dakar, one message was clear. Africa’s health future depends on collaboration, not silos. Innovators thrive in strong ecosystems supported by communities, health workers, governments, investors, researchers, and the right technology, policies, and infrastructure to turn ideas into real impact. From AI and health data to entrepreneurship, biotechnology and community-led solutions, #AfyaFest sparked important conversations about what it will really take to build health systems that work for Africa. She wants to finish school.  She wants to choose when she marries, and who.  She wants someone to ask her what she thinks. Nothing about that is unusual. It is what young people want everywhere.    This International Youth Day, we are saying the quiet part out loud: the aspiration is ordinary, and the obstacles are not. Future4Binti works across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia to end FGM/C and child marriage, so that every girl gets to answer that question for herself.
