So the County, my employer, decided to take over operation of the hurricane shelters within the county borders, and further decided that the library would be the ideal source of county employees to work in those shelters.

This means that I had to report at 8:00 AM on Friday -- which was _supposed!_ to be my day off as I had already worked five days last week (starting on Sunday) -- to one of the local High Schools for shelter duty.

The school was told that they were expected to accommodate up to 5400 people, but actually "only" about 1400 showed up.

Monday morning, after the tropical-storm-force winds and risk of tornadoes passed, we were released from duty. I got home to no electric, unfortunately. Then I had the rest of yesterday and today to recuperate a bit, and the power came back, at least so far, at lunchtime. (Please let my power stay up!)

So I'm safe and probably back at work tomorrow.

I managed to get to the new Star Wars this afternoon; just got back! I was beginning to worry that I was going to miss it in the theater, so, whew!

So last night I was on the net as usual, checking various sites, reading stuff, playing WoW, etc., when suddenly the link I clicked didn't work. I glanced at the modem and sure enough the net connection was down.

Now this is not uncommon, and usually the connection comes back in a few minutes.

Not this time, but the cable was still working on the television . . . I tried unplugging the modem and unplugging the cable and plugging them back in, but that didn't help.

So I call the tech support (so called) for the cable company, and got the usual fluent-in-accented-English operator, who talked me through her script (disconnect the router and make a direct connection, unplug the modem, shut down the computer, yes you have to, restart the modem, restart the computer) but none of it helped.

Then she says we'll have to schedule a technician, but the next available appointment is on the 7th . . . which is next Wednesday, nearly a week away! (We know you need your Internet and we're sorry for the inconvenience, but it's a holiday weekend, blah blah blah)

Nearly a week on dialup! *shiver*

I decided to unplug the modem overnight, just in case overheating was be the problem.

And yes, this morning when I woke up and plugged it in, my connection came back! *whew* Thank whatever was listening! (Don't know if it was overheating or just came back on its own, and I don't care, either. It's back! And all I lost was a few tabs on my browser session.)

So I have called and canceled their next available appointment *nyah*

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a spare cable modem on hand in case this one decides to die permanently?

May they be chained to a chair for eternity with nothing but Barney to listen to!

May they be caught with diarrhea in public and no access to toilet paper in front of someone they were hoping to favorably impress!

Gallstones! Locusts! Leprosy! . . .

*snarl*

At least this time it was "only" my car that was broken into, and "only" the damage to the car to worry about (it's undriveable because they ripped the ignition apart). Apparently they were trying to steal it.

It's taken the better part of the day, but the police report is taken care of (and I only had to wait about an hour and a half for the deputy), the car is at the dealer, and I have a rental, most of which my insurance is covering.

And I've lost a day's work, but I've got plenty of leave saved up.

Still, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I found out about this from [livejournal.com profile] the_shoshanna and she's right, it's hysterical. You are Captain Carrot Ironfounderson of the City Watch in the greatest city on the Disc – Ankh-Morprok! A truly good natured, honest guy, who knows everyone, and is liked by all. Technically a dwarf, but only by adoption. You’d rather not be reminded that you are the true heir to the throne, but that does explain why people naturally follow your orders…

After work today I headed down to the mall to play with the newest toy check out the iPhone. I was out of the country (a brief trip to BC) for its debut or I probably would've been there that first day, though not necessarily to buy.

And the gadget does have a seriously high cool factor, and I am ticked off at my current cel phone service (my contract ran out a few months ago, and they just hit me with a serious rate hike); but I'm still not thinking I'm going to rush right in and buy one.

I was kind of hoping, really, that this gadget would pull a three-in-one and replace my cel phone and my iPod and my PDA.

And it kind of sort of almost would.

As a cel phone it looks like it'd be fine (I didn't actually get to try that part). As an iPod, well, I'm currently carrying the 60GB model, and a max of 8GB would be a serious comedown. And as a PDA . . . we hit the serious shortfall.

I use my PDA primarily as an eBook reader, and that's the problem. The iPhone won't store documents, except maybe as e-mail attachments. Word is, if you are using the WiFi for your surfing, the speed is okay, but if you're using the cel phone network, not so much. And I noticed that although I could easily shrink and expand the web pages I was looking at, the pages didn't reformat to match the new size; I'd have to keep moving the view from side to side to read something. I'm used to having to scroll up and down, but having to scroll sideways for every line would be a serious pain!

I have a feeling that there'll be third party widgets out soon to take care of some of these problems, and I'll be seriously surprised if there isn't soon a model that has some sort of removable storage option.

Cool it is, but there are still some rough edges to rub off. Maybe I'll succumb after some of them are . . .

Picked up from several people, most recently [livejournal.com profile] badgermirlacca:

Your Birthdate: July 25

You excel at anything difficult or high tech.
In other words, you're a total (brilliant) geek.
It's difficult for you to find people worth spending time with.
Which is probably why you'll take over the world with your evil robots!

Your strength: Your unfailing logic

Your weakness: Loving machines more than people

Your power color: Tan

Your power symbol: Pi

Your power month: July

Now, this is . . . well. I mean. No, I wouldn't say I love machines more than people. You could probably fairly say that I like most machines more than a lot of people, but . . . and taking over the world would be way too much work.

But really. Tan? I mean, Tan? Surely they jest.

Ick.

ETA: On reflection, perhaps the intense reaction to the color comes from having driven a tan-colored car for over twenty years. I was so bored of that color . . . !
