The next Tata Sons chairman will inherit much more than a ₹16 lakh crore business empire. They will inherit unfinished arguments. How much more capital should Air India absorb? How long should Tata Digital be given? Can a semiconductor bet worth a trillion rupees be judged on normal commercial timelines? Should Tata Sons remain private? How does SP get liquidity? And, most importantly, where should power really sit between Tata Trusts and the Tata Sons board? Our latest episode on The Morning Brief looks at the real legacy of N Chandrasekaran’s final months. Tata Group is facing a leadership transition at a critical juncture as chairman N Chandrasekaran prepares to step down in February, putting the conglomerate’s planned $120 billion investment programme over the next five years under scrutiny. The change comes as the group pursues large bets across semiconductors, aviation, electric vehicle batteries, AI infrastructure and consumer technology, while Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, pushes for greater capital discipline and quicker returns on investments. “Chandra has overseen an investment-heavy transformation of the Tata Group across aviation, electronics, semiconductors and digital. His departure could signal a greater focus on capital discipline, consolidation and extracting returns from those investments rather than continuing the same pace of expansion,” said Utkarsh Sinha, managing director, Bexley Advisors.

Ola Electric has received a two-year extension to meet key milestones under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cells. The extension gives the company additional time to scale up its domestic battery-cell manufacturing, as India continues to push for greater local production of advanced batteries and reduce dependence on imports. Ola Electric is currently the only beneficiary under the ACC battery PLI scheme to have installed production capacity, with the broader programme facing delays in capacity rollout. The move provides some breathing room for Ola Electric as it works to expand its battery manufacturing operations and meet the revised milestones under the scheme. “We hadn't factored any incentives into our business projections after overshooting the original timelines,” Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, said in the statement. “Ola is now well ahead of the government's revised schedule, and enables us to access the full potential of Rs 7240 crore and receive disbursement as soon as next quarter.”
