Most leadership frameworks fade within a year or two. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭. That's what struck me in a recent conversation on Stories That Shape Leaders with Akhil Saxena, PCC, former VP at Amazon and now an executive coach. He talked about a framework he calls '𝐉𝐄𝐃𝐈', which expands to judgement, emotional intelligence, digital fluency, and inspiration. The piece I found myself nodding at most was judgement: the ability to hold a decision steady while the data underneath it is still forming. That is rarer than people assume, and it is usually what separates leaders who freeze under ambiguity from ones who don't. I would add that none of these four hold up much on their own. I have seen plenty of leaders with sharp judgement who never built enough trust for anyone to act on it, and just as many who are wonderful with people but lose the room the moment technology enters the conversation.
