As cities face rising climate risks and growing infrastructure needs, green bonds offer a potential pathway to mobilise long-term financing for sustainable urban development. But is Kochi ready to access this opportunity? CPPR’s latest paper assesses the Kochi Municipal Corporation’s regulatory, fiscal and institutional readiness for entering the municipal green bond market. Kochi’s traffic needs more than new roads. As Kochi expands its road infrastructure, the bigger question is whether new roads alone can address the city’s growing mobility challenges. D Dhanuraj, Chairman, CPPR, highlights the need to strengthen and integrate public transport alongside road development. Without viable alternatives to private vehicles, additional road capacity could risk encouraging more traffic rather than easing congestion. Nightlife is more than entertainment—it can contribute to a city’s economy, activate public spaces and give people opportunities to relax and socialise after work. The Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR), Kochi, in association with the Center for Social and Policy Research at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), convened a stakeholder consultation on shared mobility and Intermediate Public Transport (IPT) in Karnataka on 6 August 2026, as part of its project "Reforms to Promote Shared Mobility for Economic Empowerment and Growth in Rural India." CPPR presented its study findings on how the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Karnataka's Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, leave shared services such as share-autos and mini-buses without a legal category and outlined reform options achievable within existing law. Local stakeholders, including research institutions, operator unions, transport enthusiasts, and students, then shared their observations, affirming that the issue was pressing and required urgent policy action. 📸 Glimpses from the stakeholder roundtable.
