  • 69% of US adults used a wallet in the past 30 days, yet cards still win at physical point-of-sale in North America. The US is the outlier here, not the leader — infrastructure maturity (or lack of NFC terminals) matters more than consumer appetite.

Your phone doesn't actually store your card number — it stores a token. That one fact explains why digital wallets are quietly becoming the default way the world pays. Juniper Research pegs global digital wallet users at ~4.5B in 2025, heading toward 6B by 2029. But the more interesting shift isn't payments volume — it's scope. Wallets are turning into general-purpose containers for anything that needs to be verified: driver's licenses, national IDs, loyalty cards, and soon, spending permissions for AI agents making purchases on our behalf. The EU's eIDAS 2.0 mandate requires every member state to offer a digital identity wallet by the end of 2026. Ukraine's Diia, Poland's mObywatel, and mobile driver's licenses in several US states are already live examples. Payments and identity are converging into the same tap. The question worth discussing: who should own that wallet — banks, phone makers, or governments? • Revolut just stopped being "the banking app." In France, it's now an actual bank. Same IBAN, same card, same app. But behind it: full deposit protection, room for mortgages and business lending, and a second ECB-supervised banking entity alongside their existing Lithuanian one. This is the second licence upgrade in three years — UK in 2024, EU in 2022, now a standalone French bank. The pattern is becoming hard to ignore: scale fintechs are trading passporting convenience for local banking credibility, market by market. Is this the playbook every scaled fintech ends up following — or is Revolut's balance sheet the only one that can afford six more national licences? (Full breakdown in the first comment 👇)

  • Western Union has launched Stablecard: a self-custody wallet connected to a Visa payment card and powered by its USDPT stablecoin. The interesting part is not the blockchain. It is what happens after a remittance arrives. Instead of automatically converting the transfer into local currency, recipients can retain dollar value and spend it gradually through familiar card infrastructure. Stablecoins may not replace cards, banks and licensed money transmitters. They may become another settlement layer beneath them. Is this the model that finally takes stablecoins into everyday cross-border payments—or just a more complicated prepaid card? • Stripe just made a $53 billion bid for PayPal. The company that's already winning doesn't usually buy the company that's losing. So why is this happening? The real story might not be PayPal at all — it might be what happens when payments infrastructure and AI-driven "agentic commerce" collide, and everyone wants to own the rails first. Would you bet on this deal closing? And if it does — does it make PayPal stronger, or just bigger? (Full breakdown in the first comment 👇) #stripe #paypal #merger #fintech #banking #payments

  • Three years in and only 20% of financial institutions have joined? For infrastructure this important, that's too slow. The Fed needs to either mandate participation for institutions above a certain size or create stronger commercial incentives, because voluntary adoption is clearly not hitting the ambition.

FedNow just crossed a real milestone: 1,800 banks and credit unions are now connected, roughly half of all U.S. checking and savings accounts have access, and settled payments jumped 85% quarter-over-quarter. Seven of the top 10 U.S. banks are on board, and federal agencies like Treasury and FEMA are already using it for real disbursements. But the adoption story has an asterisk. Only about 1 in 5 of the country's 9,000 financial institutions have signed up, and many of those are "receive-only" — they haven't turned on the ability to send instant payments, which is where real utility (and risk) lives. The Fed's proposed change to Regulation J could open the door to cross-border instant payments by letting banks route through intermediaries, similar to Fedwire. The next phase isn't about signing up more banks — it's about getting the ones already in the network to actually use both sides of the pipe. #FedNow #InstantPayments #RealTimePayments #Fintech #BankingInnovation #PaymentsIndustry #DigitalBanking #FederalReserve #FinancialServices #CrossBorderPayments https://lnkd.in/dhYMMTkR

  • Seven years ago, this company sold no-fee credit cards. Last week, Mexico's regulator handed it the keys to a full bank. Nu México just received its Operations Authorization from the CNBV — the final step in converting from a limited-scope savings institution (SOFIPO) into a full multiple bank. The numbers behind it are hard to ignore: → 15M+ customers (≈15% of Mexico's adult population) → 12,000 new customers added every single day → $5.9B in deposits, breakeven reached in Q1 2026 → $4.2B more committed through 2030 What actually changes: Nu can now offer payroll accounts, higher deposit limits, and a much broader product set. In a market where only ~36% of adults hold a payroll account — and 90% of those sit with just four banks — that's the real target, not deposits. The bigger pattern: regulators across Latin America are showing they'll license fintechs all the way into full banks, not just tolerate them as apps with banking features bolted on. Where do you think this ends — fintechs becoming banks, or banks becoming fintechs first? (Full breakdown in the first comment 👇) #fintech #license #nubank #banking

  • Money that never sleeps is (almost) here. 🌍 Swift just confirmed its blockchain-based ledger is ready for initial use — and 17 major banks across six continents are lining up to pilot live cross-border payments with tokenised deposits. That means value moving 24/7, including weekends and overnight, before settling through the systems banks already trust. The interesting part isn't the tech. It's who's behind it. The cooperative at the very centre of traditional banking is now routing tokenised money on-chain — laying groundwork for programmable money and agentic commerce. So here's the real question: is this the incumbents leading the future of payments — or finally catching up to the crypto rails they spent years dismissing? 👇 #CrossBorderPayments #Fintech #Blockchain #TokenisedDeposits #Payments #Banking #DigitalAssets #ProgrammableMoney #Swift #24x7Payments #Treasury #FinancialInfrastructure

  • Everyone optimizes for conversion; fewer optimize for cost per authorized transaction. Dynamic fee routing and local acquiring can move your net margin more than a UI redesign will. Payments is a P&L lever, not just a growth lever. I'd love to see more teams treat it that way.

Checkout used to be plumbing. Now it's product. The best payment experiences share one trait: invisible sophistication. The customer taps once and it just works — but underneath sits a stack doing serious work. A few things separating the leaders from the laggards: → Local payment methods aren't optional. Pix in Brazil, A2A transfers in Europe, digital wallets in Asia. Miss a customer's preferred rail and trust evaporates at the worst possible moment. → Security should be felt, not seen. Behavioral biometrics, tokenization, and 3DS2 let you challenge only the risky transactions — not punish the 95% who are legitimate. → Redirects cost you. Pushing users to an external gateway can drop conversion up to 15%. Embedded, single-tap checkout is the new baseline. → The magic happens after "Pay." Smart routing and cascading failover quietly rescue transactions that rigid systems would decline. Payment is no longer an afterthought bolted onto the funnel. It's a core product pillar — and increasingly, a competitive moat. #Payments #Fintech #CheckoutOptimization #OpenBanking #CustomerExperience. https://lnkd.in/dhQrYVJM

  • 140 companies. One stablecoin. And some of the fiercest rivals in payments — Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, Stripe, BNY and more — all backing it at once. Open USD promises no-cost minting, shared reserve income, and "collaborative" governance. On paper, it's the open, neutral rails the industry has been asking for. But when giants this big agree to share the same infrastructure, it's worth asking who really benefits — the market, or the members of the club? We broke it down on the blog 👇 (link in the comments). Would a stablecoin built by 140 competitors make payments more open — or hand a new set of gatekeepers the keys? #Stablecoins #Payments #Fintech #DigitalAssets #OpenUSD #CrossBorderPayments #Banking #PaymentInnovation

  • A milestone for European finance: Crédit Agricole has issued EURXT — a euro stablecoin on Ethereum, fully backed 1:1 by fiat — and already used it to settle a subscription to a tokenised Amundi money market fund. Regulated bank-issued stablecoins are no longer a concept. They're settling real transactions. Read our full take on the blog (link in comments). Do you think bank-issued stablecoins will make private stablecoins like USDC and USDT irrelevant in Europe — or will they coexist? #Stablecoin #TokenisedFinance #DigitalAssets #Payments #Fintech #Blockchain #MiCA #InstitutionalCrypto #Banking #Ethereum
