Summary: It's hench week at Ask a Manager!

Reccer's Notes: Ask a Manager is an advice column for workplace issues, and Hench is a comic about henchmen. This hilarious story is a series of good advice for both evil henchmen and people who manage evil henchmen, dealing with all sorts of workplace hazards ranging from the aftermath of sex pollen to how to manage someone who is using their evil to annoy their own team and beyond. It's amazing and funny whether you know either canon or not.

Okay, everything about the last 2 episodes of Abbott Elementary ("The Mall" parts 1 &2) was THE BEST.

spoilers )

I haven't laughed so hard in a while.

In other news, my nephew and I keep texting each other "wtf?" about everything the Mets have done (or not done) this offseason. Today we were just like, "Wtf?" The Mets now have like 17 second basemen. Hopefully at least one can pitch and one can play left field, because those are the spots they needed to fill. Now they are going to put Bichette at third and Baty in left? What is happening!?! Also, have an obligatory fuck the Dodgers!

Meanwhile, the Rangers' sell-off begins. It's the right thing but ugh, it's going to be hard if Panarin goes to Florida. I can and do root for Detroit and Dallas, but I cannot root for Florida. I guess we'll see what happens. Maybe they'll be able to foist Miller off on someone else too. *crosses fingers*

I was talking about story exchanges with friends and realized my kink list of yes/no/maybe in fiction dated to 2011.

And that that was 15 years ago.

I overhauled it, so for anyone interested in a dive into my kinks, by all means have at.

OSP's "Chill Year" 2026

If you enjoy Overly Sarcastic Productions (YouTube channel) -- as you will if you try them! they bring joy and knowledge of media, literature, and history in their own delightful ways -- but not so very much that you also listen to their podcast or subscribe to their Patreon, you may be wondering, hey, where's today's new video? What's a Friday without new OSP? How shall I press on through this vale of tears without new OSP to look forward to at the end of each workweek?

Well, after ~15 years of consistently posting a banger new video every Friday, and with Red's webcomic taking physical form via Andrews & McMeel, and Blue working on his second book, and both of them jointly publishing co-written short stories, they have declared 2026 to be "Chill Year." They will post a banger new video every other Friday, fortnightly instead of weekly (aka "not that biweekly, the other biweekly" as Red says of the podcast).

They plan to resume weekly videos in 2027. And they've explicitly promised that the much-loved annual installment of Red's animatic retelling of The Journey to the West will arrive on schedule, as always. ♥

Still trying to catch up...

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good.

1. I leave pretty good comments for people. I try to apply the principle that they could be having a very drab, sucky day. This feels even more valuable to the world with scam and bot comments everywhere.

2. I write fairly well. Not in a timely fashion, or as a great wordsmith, but I don't quit when it's difficult, or phone it in. Whatever I write is always done to the best of my ability, I take pride in it, and I always work toward finishing projects. Eventually.

3. While I am not the greatest at plotting, I am quite good (knock wood) at navigating out of the blind corners and logical implosions I find myself in and fixing my blunders before they reach the public. Sometimes I even discover places to retroactively apply foreshadowing! That's always handy.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis'
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Elizabeth Weir, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Explicit eventually
Length: ~33,000
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings, mentions of blood
Creator Links: boochicken on LJ
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, First time, Vampires, Action/adventure

Summary: none

Reccer's Notes: Rodney gets turned into a vampire by rogue technology on a mission. This is crack taken seriously as there's no fantasy element, and for the initial part Rodney himself is adamant that vampires don't exist. The story takes this premise and plays it out in a canon setting, with Rodney having to develop coping methods for the downsides - like bursting into flame in sunlight (his super sunblock helps a bit), and accessing a supply of blood. Apart from the blood drinking and risk of immolation (and not having a pulse) he's very much his usual self, and, as ever, even manages to save the day despite these problems. It's a delightful story with lots of plot and action, and a friends to lovers romance with John. Gripping, and very well written!

[personal profile] havocthecat asked a question that made me realize that the casting news for the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie may have flown fully under the radar last year, for people less obsessed than me, because the studio very deliberately cast virtual unknowns:
These two were announced last July. No others have been announced, but an unconfirmed leak strongly indicates a certain third character. Perhaps interestingly, that leak, which happened in November when someone took sneaky unauthorized video footage, was successfully drowned out for virality when the studio responded by releasing three official stills of the leads in costume, in character, on set: a portrait each of Zelda and Link, and one of the two of them together looking out across Hyrule (as played by New Zealand).

This IGN article has all three official photos, the story of the leak and official release, and a link to the spoiler leak footage. Here's the Zelda portrait:

musesfool: Kaz/Inej (we never stop fighting)
[personal profile] musesfool
I had a very long anxiety dream last night that involved trying to get home and failing repeatedly. First I told the driver I lived at my old address on the Upper East Side, then other people joined the ride and demanded to get dropped off before heading to Queens. The then driver bailed and a new set of passengers took over the driving and refused to exit the BQE to the LIE to get me home. Eventually I was dropped off on what appeared to be Hillside Avenue, which is not far from me in the waking world, but somehow in the dream the walk never brought me any closer. Ugh. I guess it was a new spin, since usually I'm trying to get to work in these dreams, but it felt like it lasted all night (I did sleep through for about 6 hours straight, so maybe it did).

Anyway, despite the ongoing trashfire, some cool stuff is coming:

- NEW SIX OF CROWS BOOK IN JUNE!!!! It's supposed to be the "private correspondence of Kaz Brekker with a mysterious person identified only as 'I.'" KAZ/INEJ EPISTOLARY STORY!??! I am seated and ready. Take my money, please!

- You probably already know this, but The Pitt was renewed for a third season last week.

- Pitchers and catchers report in less than 1 month. The Mets only got worse over the winter, so who knows what the hell is going to happen, but that is always a sign spring isn't too far away!

- The (NY football) Giants may be getting an actual factual head coach? I don't expect miracles but maybe they won't be embarrassing next season?

I feel like there were one or two other things I meant to post about but can't remember what they were. Oh, there's a new Fonda Lee novel coming, too! I do want to try out Matt Fraction's Batman at some point, and Cass's new book, but since I generally wait for the trade paperbacks (in ebook form anyway), they're not always top of mind. Still no release date for Alecto the Ninth (is it ever coming out?) and no kindle edition for DCC: Parade of Horribles but I keep checking!

Podfic done by PolynomialPandemic
Theme: Crack Treated Seriously, angst (with a happy ending), crack, fix-it, humour

Summary: The Jedi Council was nervous. The Jedi Council was very, very nervous, so much so that the usual meditation-and-releasing-emotions-into-the-Force shtick had failed and High General Mace Windu had broken out the spotchka.

If anything called for drinks, it was discovering that your whole Order was sitting on a primed thermal detonator - well. More like a million of them.

Reccer's Notes: A bit less Crack-Treated-Seriously and a bit more Serious-Treated-Crackily. Starts out super funny, veers into heartbreaking, and then swings right back to being funny again. I love the attention to detail that makes every single character (and there are a lot) feel unique and in character even if they only get a couple lines. The Clone Commanders chat is also super fun and is a feature I've seen used before but never so well with so many characters.

I'm over four-hundred hours into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild since I got my Switch 2 this summer, and while I am a lore-hound and story-obsessive, I'm not a completionist as such. I'll try just about anything in game for more dialogue, but very little to run up numbers. So the end is near. I won't be able to put off storming the castle to join the princess and together defeat the big bad much longer.

But! I have the DLC pack -- that is, downloadable content, in this case 2 bonus adventures. After I finished all the shrines in the base game, I triggered "The Champions' Ballad." Unlike "Trial of the Sword," which is just a battle gantlet that I may never finish (it rewards nothing but a power-up), "Champions' Ballad" rewards story, sweet, sweet story: new side quests to help familiar characters, new puzzle shrines to solve, new journals of deceased companions to read, and new prequel flashbacks to watch (and, yes, more fights). I want all this story!

However, starting "The Champions' Ballad" one Saturday night with only a general idea of its mechanics, I found the first stage a frustrating, dismaying leap in difficulty. I was immensely put off. I thought about giving up. I grumpily Google Searched on: "Breath of the Wild Champions' Ballad is no fun because it is too hard." Read more... )

I'm enjoying "Champions' Ballad" immensely since I got out of that first section, btw. Story, story, story...

Alright, I was given an idea of how to make this challenge more psychologically acceptable to myself, and that is Fic Rec Requests. I recently discovered that I can organize my AO3 bookmarks, with little annotations to jog my memory and with bookmarker tags which enable me to sort them by baseline mood and format. Once everything was indexed, "plot" turned out to be my winning tag, with "character study" right behind.

And I finally reached one hundred bookmarks! So what better way to inaugurate the next hundred than by asking for recommendations!

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

Rating from G to M is great, gen or shippy is fine. I am not very fond of complete AUs (canon divergence is great).

1. Buffyverse recs. I like pretty much every character, and the myriad moods of the shows, so hit me up with whatever you think is good. Stuff dealing with consequences from show events. Wackiness. Missing scenes. Interactions between people who scarcely or never did so in canon.

2. Teen Wolf. All the above applies, but please, no Sterek and no Magical McMuffin Stiles.

3. Highlander. Especially if it deals with secondary or one-shot characters.

4. Fanvids (any fandom). Fanvids are really hard to stumble over in the wild, and they are an absolute joy, even if I know nothing about the fandom.

Thanks in advance! My completionist self is now happy.

Summary: In this house we respect the Jedi Order, the Force, and our Very Holy General Kenobi (peace be upon his beard).

Obi-Wan is back on Coruscant. Wary, famished, and deeply not ready for what’s waiting.

He thought the clones would hate him. Instead?
They built shrines.
They quote his sass like scripture.
And someone really needs to stop printing stickers.

Featuring: false sightings, reverent memes, emotional breakdowns, and a commander who never stopped waiting.

Reccer's Notes: A very fun fic which mixes modern media fandom things (e.g. the clones have a kind of Discord chat), a fix-it AU (well...some things are fixed, anyway), and heartfelt feelings platonic and otherwise.

The other day, I posted If you wanna know if he loves you so, a 150-word story about a boy meeting his soulmate(s)(?).

I included discussion questions in the first comment because I had recently had a Tumblr conversation with [personal profile] teland where I linked her to someone floating the possibility of discussion questions on fanfiction with the implication that the questions, and responses, would be AI slop.

She responded by writing discussion questions for her seminal DC Comics identity porn story, A clarification of range, written before we called it "identity porn" and long before the term got diluted into "X doesn't know Y's secret identity... yet!" which is more properly, if less catchily, (if I do say so myself) anagnorisis.

If you have any knowledge or inquisitiveness whatsoever about DC Comics, run, do not walk, to read or reread that story. I still laugh about it regularly, and I have to remind myself it's not canon. I read it before I read any of Young Justice or the relevant Teen Titans, and it built foundational parts of my characterization.

Here are [personal profile] teland's questions:
Students! Did you know 'The End' is just the beginning? Follow along with me, and the story will never die! )

My response was:

Tonight’s homework: Read Whither Kelvin Trillion, Wither the Republic (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Explicit, the one in which one character writes filthy limericks about everyone else in canon worth boinking and a few who aren’t.)

Pre-reading: Given your knowledge of the author, speculate on the pairings.

Discussion Questions )

Té and I had a good laugh about it.

Then we got talking about soulmates as a trope, and I wrote the story linked at the top with discussion questions.

[personal profile] sanguinity's comment threw me bodily to the floor, convulsed with giggles of joy. It's considerably longer than the drabble-and-a-half I wrote and shows an attention to detail I cannot but applaud.

I may have broken kayfabe in my response. Can you blame me?

See, sometimes a good grade in commenting is normal to want and possible to achieve. I definitely got a good grade on the story and questions, so it's only fair.

But it's not a perfect grade, due [personal profile] sanguinity having good enough taste not to have watched the Star Wars prequels. Gotta deduct points for not reading the deeply silly text.
