* 4/28/24: A massive bureaucracy packet arrived Wednesday afternoon. Sigh. It is exhausting and on top of everything handwriting with my dominant hand is difficult and unpleasant. There is nothing for it. i need the packet finished and out so I can focus on the other bureaucracy that arrived Tuesday. and Physio. And Everything else. It's time sensitive anyway.

Thursday I was still recovering from physio and I had to stay up for the cleaner. (Two times in a row! Things are clean!). Friday I spent a couple hours doing phone bureaucracy, mostly on hold. It'd be faster if Social security voice bot believed in my weird foreign name. Sigh.

Saturday was the Great Sorting. Sunday should be Actual Paperwork. I need Squirrel to print a thing out for me too which is always a drama and requires carrying the printer around.

And then there's the waiting for Things to Arrive in the Mail and the field trip to turn things in which involves highway driving, which I can hopefully manage at that point. *fingers crossed*

My arm still emphatically does not want to go up. I have devised an extra low impact stretch for myself where I rest it on the desk podium where Klaus laptop used to set before the Emperor executed Aidan lap top. It seems small and stupid, but is clearly a lot less dangerous than the official upward arm stretch. I do it in small batches when reading longer things on the internet. I wish I could do it Instead of, but I know better.

Goth Millennial has been very busy in the garden, which is needful. They are moving soon and have decided that they won't need metal outdoor shelving they had been using indoors at their place. They are therefore constructing more plant shelving on the patio. Livia is pretty sure it is actually the zombie hoard coming to get her. The garden is going pretty well despite the weird chill that has persisted most of April despite the weird late March heat wave. Climate change is do weird shit to our weather patterns.

* 5/3/24:
Monday was fire inspection. This involves about an hour of teeth rattling sirens at random interval and a Stranger in Boots invading the cat asylum. As a result, the cats have been incredibly stressed out all week, though things were finally settling down as of Thursday.

Squirrel has been having an ongoing medical issue that got acute enough that on Tuesday they agreed to fit him in extremely early Wednesday morning. I was able to cancel my medical transport for arm torture, and took him. While he was in there I cashed a bunch of the May OTC at the pharmacy and took my bureaucracy packet in to the office where it goes. The timing was excellent. I was a few blocks away when they released squirrel and there was just time enough to take him to his referral for more testing and then drop him home before my appointment. (Everyone's being reasonable about the situation including his employer. I feel a lot better knowing they are checking properly to rule out more serious things.)

Arm torture is arm torture. The new PT is really nice and a delight. We are at the lots and lots of stupid little exercise phase still. (The exercises are correct and there is already noticeable improvement, but they are also emotionally unsatisfying. It is hard to explain. This is probably an ex-athlete psychology problem. In any case, I am being good and not pushing dangerously hard. I dropped stuff my body was not up to Monday evening like I'm supposed to. I am doing everything I reasonably can, which is all of it most days. I am working the program). He added two extra ones to help my arm with the doesn't want to go up issue.

* I am still struggling with the Asshole agency. I was awakened Sunday morning by a cleaner checking in on her way to my place. Fuckssake! I do not understand why it's so hard to grasp only send cleaners every Friday morning unless I say other wise. They tried to send a morning and afternoon cleaner last Tuesday. Every day i have the same conversation about me only wanting weekly care Friday mornings. Every day they cancel the next day's cleaner, but not the day after. I only get so many hours a year and we are saving the extras for Autumn when millennials are busy with Gothmas season and the like.

I did not cancel the morning cleaner Sunday, because she'd already been booked and if I cancel that's money she loses. It was hours of sleep I needed, but oh well. Asshole agency. I did have about two hours of work for her, but I've no idea what happens if the telephone operator lady didn't sort it and a surprise cleaner comes Monday, as the stuff that's left is either complicated or not in the cleaner's remit. She said she'd switched me from daily back to weekly. *Fingers crossed*

This cleaner was very quiet. Tavy liked her. She was so quiet, Livia thought she'd gone and wandered into my bathroom to use her personal litter box and there she was: cleaning! Livia: The horror! The horror! Quiet was good. it meant I could do some tumblr programming with only occasional interruption for directions.

Winds from the tropical storm in Mexico and California are sending air currents along the coast that bring us smoke from the fires between us and there. Air quality was bad all weekend as a result. Instead of swimming we gathered in my place and goth Millennial made their excellent lasagna.

* I had my shoulder situation investigated again Tuesday. It was painful, of course, and my shoulders are still recovering. The new doctor had not grasped how extreme the situation is. We will be doing another round of specialists as a result. I have just started a new med. I am not sanguine it will be to the point and I worry it will fuck me up, but having eliminated the best option, we are down to two less ideal classes. I thought the other option too high risk for extreme side effects, so here we are.

( Musings on B5, TV Production, and the writer's strike: )

All the actors were amazed that they always got to go home at five. Shooting stopped on time! This hardly ever happens! They could make dinner plans even on a Friday and get proper sleep instead of Friday shooting running into Saturday to make up missed shots. Which I suspect means that all the tech side folk js too got to have personal lives and sleep. O.o For five years! Steady employment with a reliable schedule in TV! I bet it saved money too, to not have to pay over time, to not have all that standing around when they could be setting up the next shot which wastes everyone's time and money. People were happier and they weren't run as nearly ragged and they made five seasons of antifascist and anti-colonialist science fiction with characters and dialog that will live in my heart and mind until I die.

All because they let the showrunner show run and write with a staff of writers who could stay on the project long term. Stuff that got seeded in season one paid off in later seasons. The writers all knew the lore and backstories and the relationships and where things were going.

You can't make TV like that without writers. You can't make TV like that with minirooms and gig employees.

I know I keep harping on how important that the WGA wins and wins big on Tumblr. (I do things on it on the aggregate as well, but I don't trust a lot of the journalism because it tends to be slanted for the greedy ass corporations, so way less turns up there). This is why I care so much. Because tech crew got to drive home safe after a reasonable work day instead of falling asleep at the wheel and crashing. Because it was a huge benefit to the actors who got a chance to really practice their craft and still go home at night. Because the directors could focus on making the best show possible every week without mountains of extra hassle. Because things like B5 and Black sails and stranger Things and Umbrella Academy and pretty much every show I've loved intensely as an adult absolutely require a reasonably stable writer's room with writers paid well enough to live while they do it.

If WGA wins, everybody wins. The tiny sliver of profits it takes to make all this happen is negligible.

I hope SAG and DGA strike too. I hope they all stand together and stop the Capitalist horror that grinds up writers and tech folk like they were components and not utterly essential.

The WGA are not greedy; they are fighting for their livelihoods and their art and it infuriates me that people can't wait a little longer for all the ways it will make the world better if the Studios blink first.

* Spoke to the Allergist today. They are plateauing me for the summer and are guaranteeing me treatment until September. This is good, as my lungs haven't been doing this well in Spring for years. I think it's peeling the trees and weeds away. Grasses remain a major problem. As I'm on Medicare, she's advocating for my transfer to a clinic by the hospital that will take it if they aren't full and my chances are good given the extreme severity of the grass allergy and my general improvement in other areas. They are full to bulging with patients already, especially with the influx from the closing clinic, but digits cruciform, yes?

This does not diminish my horror and distress for all the Medicaid patients and the people who are about to lose their jobs, but I for real was dreading the slow slide into allergy based ER visits that is near future if we stop treatment.

So I'm on maintenance for the Summer while we wait it all out.

I’ve stated some form of this over the years any number of times, but in the current climate, I should reiterate it.

My dislike of Netanyahu and his ultra-right positions is specific to Netanyahu because of his ultra-right positions, his corruption, his policies, etc.. His party and allies have policies I oppose, much in the way I oppose Trump and the Republicans, Rishi Sunak (and Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, and every Tory PM back to the much hated Thatcher which was about when I started following UK Politics in real time), Viktor Orbán, Jair Bolsanaro, and a host of other horrible extreme right wing politicians the world over to numerous to list.

This does not and should not be taken for anger at the Israeli left or Jewish people the world over who did not vote for a right wing party in the recent Israeli election. There is a reason my coverage of Israeli politics mostly originates from left leaning Israeli news sources like Haaretz.

There is far too much violent antisemitism in the world right now, far to many politicians of every stripe happy to stoke antisemitism for personal power, far too many antisemitic movements and the like. In my country one of the two political parties with any power proudly embraces it.

This I am furious about and very much wish to fight against.

Please don’t take the recent election in Israel as an excuse to do or say something that harms real people who have nothing to do with it or were actively wanting a better outcome.

It is important to separate a dislike of a particular person for political reasons from a wider attack on a large group living in many countries famously holding a wide variety of beliefs and opinions.

How The “No Child Left Behind” Act Failed on Every Level

When this was passed teachers called it things like “children Left behind” because we could see it was designed to starve neighborhood schools so Republicans could close them, forcing busing to other schools and shifting funding even further away from the schools that need it into charter schools that can bar students who are poor, or not white, or who have limited English, or who have special needs.

This is about de facto segregation. It’s about starving public schools of funds. it’s about excuses to deprive the students with the biggest needs of an education.

All “Back to Basics” school “reforms” are about defending music, art, social studies, and sciences, because Republicans hate anything that keeps children from dropping out and/or teaches critical thinking. Science and social studies teach things like applying logic to real world problems, evaluating evidence, and thinking for yourself. The last thing they want is accurate history or modern science taught to children.

All Republicans want is to create an ignorant easily manipulable permanent underclass that votes for them. Quality Public education in anathema to them.

Republicans keep saying, “you can’t just through money at the problem,” yet never once in the history of this country have we tried funding the schools for the poor at the level we fund schools for the well off. we know objectively that 15-18 students is the sweet spot for class size at all grades. why not for once try paying teachers a living wage and hire enough of them to give every class room the same student/teacher ratios private schools have. How about instead of pennies per student per day we actually buy enough equipment and supplies so that all students get to do hands on science instead of only students who already have all the advantages? How about paying for proper maintenance on schools so the heating works and the pipes don’t bang and the roof doesn’t leak? How about money for computers and library books? How about desks and chairs so every student in every class gets one as well as a locker that closes and locks?

Can’t we try that just once?

Teaching pays about as well as Burger King and teachers owe student loans and need to pay for continuing ed and certification re-upping. They need supplies for themselves and students and a professional wardrobe and money for transportation and to pay off massive student loans, plus food, housing, medical stuff, etc.. out of what amounts to minimum wage.

Nobody goes into teaching expecting to get rich; they do it because they want to teach. Punishing them because the schools are falling apart and the textbooks are as old as they are is counter-productive. Actually funding the schools properly would let them do their jobs.

But no one ever ask teachers when they do “school reform.” It is nearly always imposed by people who’ve never taught based on ignorance and a deep refusal to look at the research.

* Since the Pandemic started, I put out bowls of candy. each bowl has a handful of things. Adults are welcome too, and I usually give out a lot of candy. This year one person stole the bowl itself, and no one else came. I think the three families with kids have moved out, since i haven't seen or heard them playing since summer. I've noticed that the other people that usually decorate in the complex didn't this year. It's sad.

I did get reverse trick or treated and Squirrel and I split the loot. Weirdly, it was not the bowl thief.

* October is always really hard on my body and particularly so in the back half. Halloween week takes everything I have really. Samhein is the most important holiday of my year and it takes everything.

Wednesday my body hard vetoed Wednesday errands. I called Head Millennial in time for them to get public transport and make evening arrangements. I could barely walk and had the pain shakes. One days like this, it's best to just take ones meds and go back to sleep and home a nap will reset things. This was correct. When I tried again later, I was a functional level of awful. We managed to take in the Halloween specific exterior stuff and box it all up. I'll need to tweek the "Harvest Display" and do a day time sweep to be sure we got everything before boxes go back into storage. Halloweentown is in chaos, but that's another day's problem.

Head Millennial went above and beyond today. I love how fundamentally kind and trustworthy they are. we had dinner together and watched a movie we'd started a week ago, geeking out together about the high quality lighting design and mourning the death of banter in modern romcoms as well as how few productions are willing to pay for really artistic lighting. (I sited Black Sails as proof the art isn't lost, even though we might think it was looking at the newest Halloween and Got/house of the dragon. Head Millennial is very grumpy about Halloween franchise in particular.)

It sounds like Visiting Millennial has decided to move up here, so at some point in the future they will be Newest Millennial. There is much rejoicing.

NOTE for newer readers: I like to use sobriquets to prevent people chain tracking through blogs. It was always my instinct and I got stricter after that reporter found me through the blog of a friend who wasn't as careful after Skye was murdered. It was fine. She was nice and professional and my friend changed the post in case of future accident. My point is that a determined swatter could find me, but I like to make them work for it if they want my friends.

* Another disabled Elder Goth friend suggested there should be a "Retired Goth Bat sanctuary" for people like us. This delights me.

* Thursday was the blue beast's mechanic appointment. They are always booked for weeks out this time of year. This meant very little sleep, but the coolant situation is sorted and I should be okay on the engine not melting for a while. *Knock wood*

Friday I just wanted sleep, but of they woke me up trying to strong arm me into a home health assessment. Thing is, it's an excellent service and an important one. My mother used them in her last year of life when her health was failing. They assess the person; they assess the needs; they help organize complex meds schedules; they hook people up with services. I support the program and said so to the lady, but I do not want one.

Why? She wanted to know. I do not need what they are offering and I don't like strangers in my home it's invasive. I don't need a dementia test. I have a home health aid. My meds schedule is, indeed, complex, but it's logical. (Think of it as a logic puzzle. Pills needing to be taken on an empty stomach need to go first thing in the morning. Ppills needing to be taken with food need to be at least an hour after empty stomach pills, and need to work with meal scheduling. Some pills can't be taken within two hours of each other, etc.. Some pills need to be taken multiple times a day. For a while I had a pill that needed to go four times a day, at least two hours after eating and an hour before eating. It was a nightmare, but I did it.) I do not want people tampering with the schedule, because every adjustment is a hassle and a half, and I have it down. The point is, it's my body deteriorating, not my mind, and I handle things just fine within my physical limits and I hate all the invasive monitoring that comes with living in this complex and that comes with being disabled. I minimize it where I can.

So I go to the bathroom, give Livia a come for pettins offer, reset my pillow prop system, and settle back in to try to sleep.

The phone rings. It's the system that pay for my caregiver. Mandatory home inspection. *deep sigh* I managed to wiggle out of this one so far because of the pandemic. It's so intrusive and I fucking hate that I don't get to have privacy because I'm disabled. I can't manage without Head Millennial, so I guess we're doing that Monday, plus the already scheduled social worker call Tuesday.

* Wednesday, the Nearby Millenial did her first training shift under the supervision of caregiver Millenial, now promoted to Head Millenial. It was charming. The plan is we all forage Wednesday afternoons, and then Nearby Millenial clocks in for her two hours. Wednesday's are crazy busy work wise for Head Millenial at it's a huge help to everyone involved. The goal is for nearby Millenial to register to work other caregiving gigs in the area, but also be available if Head Millenial gets sick, etc..

Tavy is on day three of nightmares and high anxiety, which I am doing my best to help him with. I long for good sleep though. It'll pass eventually.

I need to take the car in again. *fingers crossed*

* Tavy was feeling much better by Friday. I alas, had crap for sleep. I had to get up mid sleep cycle to take the car in to get poked at by the honest mechanics. I was lucky. It was the lower end of the range, rather than the high end. They can't actually fix it properly until the 20th, as they are swamped and short staffed, but they patched it together so I can drive it until then if I am careful and don't drive it too much. The fix is going to be about 90, which means I can't pay a bill this month, but luckily, I have not paid it yet, so the money physically exists.

Friday was also forage food delivery. It arrived while I was out and I brought it right in and unpacked it. No mice. It was also pharmacy delivery day. I was also double booked to finish a scene on line I'd started Wednesday that was rather important for both plot and character reasons, while I was also supposed to get a visit from a Millennial to do a thing. Luckily, the timing worked pretty well and everything got done.

From the time I got up for pharmacy delivery to the actual arrival of the Millennial, poor Tavy was in an agony of excitement. From my behavior, clearly a Millennial was coming, possibly his personal favorite Millennial. Unfortunately, said Millennial arrived two hour after the usual Millennial visitor arrival time, so every time he heard a small noise or caught movement out of the corner of his eye through one of the windows he went running over to check. He was too worked up to settle. At one point he escaped onto the patio to see if the millennial was out there gardening.

The Visitor was only here for about an hour, and the Emperor tried to leave with him. Poor Button. Saturday game will be more satisfying as he likes both Millennials who are coming and they will arrive at the usualish time. (Don't worry, we mask. we are taking delta seriously. These are also the ones who literally work in the apartment and they follow proper infectious disease protocols when in public and visiting me or each other. So basically a bubble with masks.

* Saturday's game the players planned a raid/heist against the Imperial Palace of the East Roman Empire. Initially, we had four mages (plus a mortal+ henchperson), and three assorted shifts. Two of the shifters had to drop off over the summer for assorted life reasons. Last season one of the characters acquired an NPC through play, but they are still not sure what he can do. This means we have 1 Garou Ragabash in a group of mages. <.< >.> They were not a fight heave group as the other two shifters were not werewolves, so the game is designed with the best fighters in the group being the mortal plus and a literal goose. (Long story on the goose. Basically this is a group that gathers information, and ideally sneaks rather than fights.

The way I world built, some places tend to be one or another species dominant, but the big, cosmopolitan centers are generally neutral by treaty and often have mixed defenses made and maintained by mixed species. there is also some cross species cooperation, particularly between certain groups in cosmopolitan settings. (Some factions, tribes, species, etc. don't cooperate ever. Some do in limited emergency circumstances. Some are way more open and relaxed. When I run mixed groups we select for backgrounds tribes, factions, clans, traditions, species that would ICly be more open and for play balance. shifters are first level to start. mages are arete two to start which makes sense if you've ever played mage. You can do A Lot with arete two, arete one not so much. A level one shifter is about as competent as a level two mage for dealing with starter character challenges). My general way of running things is to put makes sense and fun over often conflicting source books.

The Palace is species neutral by treaty (between a limited number of species), defended by multiple species, with a whole lot of political faction ebb and flow within. The group was working as outsiders to the city power structure so the important faction heads could have plausible deniability. They infiltrated the palace and have been spying basically. Studying the physical and political layout, trying to track down the mystical source of a virulent fever that had been burning off and on for a couple of years. they discovered that and more. So much more.

In the previous session they'd found something so big it really did require a city wide response. A council of the assorted friendly Shifter and Mage faction heads from various species was called on neutral ground. The group reported the fever source and called for help with some taint cleansing in the Palace, because one Ragabash with a cleansing ritual was not going to cut it. The mage PCs couldn't go inside because the Euthantos PC had done what amounted to a plague return to sender type thing. The mystic fever did not effect Garou, but is a pain in the ass to heal in the few mages likely to catch it. (level two and up life mages aren't catching it, but not everyone has two levels in Life.) Also, the mages needed to make and hold a temporary opening in a weak place in the wards to allow Garou in the penumbra through. They also reported the threat big enough to destroy the whole city they'd discovered.

The initial higher up plan to deal with the big threat turned out to be likely worse than doing nothing when it turned out the NPC had information about a similar previous attempt a very, very long time ago. That got tabled, but the raid/heist went ahead. Mages got the cleansing party in lead by our Garou who had found the taint and knew how to get to both sites. Some of them held the hole open, while the others fought the guards who inevitably found them and a cluster of mages come to investigate the hoopla. There had been a tiny combat once before, but this was their first multi-wave, multi-round combat. Meanwhile, the Garou used a thing he'd gotten in the umbra previously to bribe some small spider spirits into helping. They stealthed about, did their cleansings, avoided spirit guardians, and did some nice looting. A guard was beheaded. a mage was cleaved in two. A couple people were battered and bitten unconscious by a Horrible Goose. (Unleash the goose of war. Some others ran away. The group escaped.

They are now at the point where they are ready to formalize the group. Progress!

* After Saturday game, I needed to get gas so I could take Head Millennial home. I usually budget $30, but prices were so high it was just short of $50. This on top of the repairs I need to the car. I was just loading back into the car, when an out of breath man jogged up. He had very little English. I have even less Spanish, since it's just random words and phrases I picked up living here over the years (slowly deteriorating since I quit teaching), plus things I can deduce from what is left of my deteriorating French and Latin vocabulary. Plus Mime.

I worked out his car had run out of gas and he'd left his family there to come try to get some. He seemed legitimately freaked out and desperate for help. I gave him one of my cheap emergency cloth masks I keep in the car so we could go inside. At some point I had a gas can, but Skye gave it away in a move, and they were now charging 18+tax for a one gallon plastic can. (Jesus, Fuck!) Luckily he had it, because I didn't, having just blown it gassing my car. I negotiated the purchase. He only had cash and the change wasn't enough, so I bought him the gallon of fuel with what was left on my card, which legitimately startled him. I kept saying and miming zero when he asked how much. I was imagining he'd need what else he might have to gas up and possibly find food and lodging for his family, and it was the least I could do. There was no question of me not offering him a ride. I've been rescued by strangers when I had car trouble before and there was simply no question of me not doing the same.

Now we had to figure out where his car was. O.o Luckily Head Millennial had taken a little Spanish via language learning program, so had about as much as the gentleman had English. This was not enough for anything like clear directions, but we did manage to work out he wanted us to get on the highway going south, which was odd, because he was definitely saying North also, but I worked it out.

They'd been travelling North through the twisty, foggy, mostly unlit mountain pass at night, which can be scary on it's own. Also, there is a very long stretch of farmland with no gas South of the mountain, and literally one place to get gas in the pass. It's not as bad as the 40ish miles of farmland on a stretch further south where I got stranded on a shoulder at night once, but it is bad and waaaaaay the fuck scarier. The shoulder is narrow, and people get nervous driving a twisty two laner that high up. especially in fog. (South bound is far lower of the slope and nowhere near as alarming at night). No one was going to stop for a latino man, even with kids anywhere up there. Odds are no one would much notice them, being too busy driving and not tangling with trucks. If you runout there you are fucked 'til morning and there is a non zero chance of someone messing up and clipping you or your car. Jesus fuck! No wonder he was so happy to see us and grateful for our help. It was a massive relief to him when I mimed turning around. he must have been terrified. I'd suspected that when he was willing to get in a beat up old car with two strange white people at night).

It was a very, very long drive to the next exit south of the gas station where we collected him. I'm not kidding about how little flatland there is on that stretch of coast. The small ass community where the last gas station before the really rocky bit is well past the high bits. We found the north on ramp after a bit of fumbling with shitty signage in the dark. (I've pulled off here maybe three times since I moved up here in '98. I know how empty the passes are, so I am super careful about enough gas. A non-local wouldn't know that though). Then there was the long drive back, with us not sure how far they'd gotten before their gas ran out.

I spotted the car in time to stop. They cleverly owned flares (I don't) and had blinkers going. He must have jogged two to three miles for help, luckily down hill, but if I hadn't offered the ride, he'd have had to do that uphill going the wrong way. I just kept thinking how scary this would have been for him even without the language barrier and not knowing if American convenience stores carried gas can. They were so happy when they saw him get out of the car with the gas, I was incredibly happy they were all safe. (We could have easily been a car full of MAGA monsters or Proud Boys with guns or bats instead of someone bringing their husband and father back).

Yes, I've had people try to scam me with out of gas stories. Yes, the PNW has a history of robbing people who stop to help stranded drivers. Yes, there is always a risk taking a stranger into one's car. It's just I am good at reading people, and I absolutely believed him. He was clearly trying very hard not to freak the fuck out and was just as clearly out of breath. He had way more reason to be frightened of approaching white strangers at night. I'm glad it was us, a couple of mild mannered goth weirdos and not some asshole he approached in his desperation. We’re a blue state because of the cities strung like necklaces on the highway strings, but scratch blue here and you get red. I hope wherever they are going, they get there safely.

- 3.3: The Paradise Syndrome.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to an 'improbably' earthlike planet. ('Improbable' despite lots of AU planets they've landed on already). They find an ancient advanced large metal artifact. They need to deflect an asteroid from the planet in thirty minutes, so clearly faffing about on the surface instead of solving the problem at any time before the last minute. They find a mix of Navaho, Mohican, and Delaware native Americans living traditional lifestyles there. There is a lot of extremely unfortunate dialog here, but it's nothing next to the appropriation, use of red face, and white savior crap to come.

Spock wants them to stop wasting time while a planet is at stake. (I agree, Spock, I agree). Kirk insists on futzing about with the obelisk for fun and to raise the stakes by wasting more time and gets sucked in. The search parties fail. Spock beams everyone up to go save the planet. McCoy has hysterics about abandoning Kirk even though logically saving the planet will save Kirk, while not saving the planet will definitely kill Kirk. Um, duh! Despite supposedly being a Doctor, McCoy somehow couldn't grasp this without it being explained as if to a three year old. McCoy gives no fucks that the entire planetary population of Native Americans will die if they don't stop the asteroid hitting the planet.

Kirk has amnesia. When he emerges from the obelisk the locals take him for their long awaited Savior God which...*head desk* Seriously, this is painful to watch. The local Elders want Kirk to prove he's a God. Kirk is supposed to rouse the Temple spirits to save them from the asteroid. Kirk vaguely remembers being from the sky and saves a drowned child with CPR, thus proving his white savior godhood. If you can not hear my disgust with this whole plot line in my typing, trust me, it's there.

Spock exceeds the safety margin to make up time for the time Kirk and McCoy wasted for no good reason. Scotty tells him off. Whatever they are paying Spock is clearly not enough. They try to deflect the asteroid, but the engines are damaged and they don't deflect the asteroid enough. Spock puts the ship in front of the asteroid in hopes of breaking it up. McCoy is still hysterical and obstructionist, unable to grasp that they need to save the planet or everyone on it dies, including Kirk.

Apparently the white lady made up in red face named Miramanee was engaged to a local named "Salish," which is the name of a real tribe near where I live. I have so many questions this episode will never answer. She breaks up with him to be Kirk's lover, because of course. Somehow Miramanee isn't bright enough to pull a tunic off using the head hole. Way to depict a grown woman as childlike. The Elders grovel in a way that turns my stomach and want to know how to advance and improve to please the Sky Gods. Ugh. I just... Why even is this episode? Kirk is happy and relaxed for the first time ever.

Miramanee is betrothed to Kirk because tribal law demands it. Suuuuurrrre. Anyway Kirk is into it, so they are to be married tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Enterprise is reduced to impulse power and they need to go to a repair base. The Rock is still headed for the planet. They will arrive in months, but four hours ahead of the asteroid. McCoy has more hysterics and berates Spock.

Salish attacks Kirk. The blood proves he's not a God. Kirk refuses to kill Salish. He and Miramanee marry. Months later, he's having nightmares and believes he doesn't deserve this happiness. Miramanee is pregnant. He invents irrigation and a lamp even though they would have had that technology.

Spock refuses to go to sick bay, being busy deciphering the obelisk. McCoy berates Spock and threatens to call security. Spock pretends to rest, then goes back to work. The symbols are both notes and an alphabet. The Preservers seeded "primitive cultures" throughout the galaxy. Their asteroid deflector has become defective. They need to fix it fast.

The asteroid approaches. Kirk tells them to go to the caves, but the locals say the caves aren't safe and he needs to go rouse the temple spirits. He prays fruitlessly. Chaos ensues. The mob stones Kirk and Miramanee. Spock and McCoy beam in, terrifying the locals. They save Kirk, but let Miramanee and her unborn baby die with only palliative care. Spock mind melds with Kirk to bring back his memory. Kirk resists, but it eventually works.

Spock catches Kirk up on the plot. He repeats his original message which accidentally opens the trap door. They try to figure out what Kirk did to screw up the system. Spock sorts it. Zap! Miramanee dies still believing in Kirk. They all bugger off having endangered a planet and contaminated another culture because they like site seeing.

The issue here is the creeper stuff (sending people unsolicited threatening sexual material, boundary pushing, lack of after care), and the out right not okay stuff like grooming underage people, animal abuse, rape, doing particularly extreme kinks without a safe word and the real risk of traumatizing, physically harming, or killing some one. * I wanted to go to bed 4AMish, but I stayed up for the specialist appointment anyway. I called at8AM sharp to check for snow cancellation. It was not cancelled, so we suited up and Squirrel brought his car around to the door where the overhang means I only had t take one step in snow and none on ice. It was fine once we left our neighborhood and even there it was fine mist drizzling. It was also noticeably lot warmer. I watched it rain gently but steadily the whole appointment, slowly melting the roof snow.

I don't like being indoors with humans, but mask and distancing were excellent. The specialist was charming. I was very on with my charm the doctor humor routine, which is always useful in getting them to take my medical stuff seriously Once upon a time I held small crowds mesmerized without a microphone. Now? I bring it out almost exclusively for nurses and doctors. Sigh.

Anyway, it looks like the mechanical joint damage isn't quite as bad as it originally sounded. The real issue is the extreme fucking pain and the atrophy (in response to the extreme fucking pain). He decided it was safe to do the treatment after all. I had this in my hips before. The needle was still comically large, though not right out of a cartoon large. It hurt even more than I remember.

I did not get to bed until noonish and it was ages to get to sleep with the pain. You know how when my lungs are bad I have the ICU oxygen dream? When the pain is extreme even for me it tends to get translated into things like stabbings or what have you. In this case I dreamed I was in hospice dying of advanced cancer (Every thing above my mi thigh was horrific and I felt terrible whenever I woke, so it's not much of a stretch), and people kept trying to kill me so I kept having to fight off or charm the assassins.

By the third bathroom break I could feel the improvement though. I am still I a lot of pain just generally, but this is the rough edge of manageable. We'll know how well it actually worked in a few days, and I need to keep an eye out for infection, but I remember when we did my hips and the ground glass in the joint feeling going away. They still fucking hurt, especially in this weather, but trust me no ground glass was a big fucking improvement over ground glass. If it goes from pain scale 7-10 down to four to 7 for my dominant arm? That would be a game changer.

* You may remember that the site for direct deposit stimulus payments glitched out on me when I tried to use it so I thought I was going to be waiting until may with the SSI people who didn't file. (The free service I file through uses Turbo Tax). It turns out I didn't and they sent me a check in the mail today.

I was bad. On the way back I went into the grocery, masked up with one of my few heavy duty masks, of course. It was a half hour before close and they are usually fairly empty then anyway, which they were. It was the neighborhood one, so full of college age people at that time of night. I was shocked only half were masked, though all the workers were. People were being good about social distancing and the aisles are wide. They had one way signs, floor spacing lines, and sneeze guards.

I know I'm not supposed to go out; I haven't since early March, but we've hardly any new cases here, though many still on the ventilators, and I felt pretty safe with people being obviously careful with spacing.

I managed to score a mega big package of my personal favorite TP that may last me up to two months, the good kleenex that doesn't chafe my nose, though in the smaller sizes, bagels, and fresh veg. Alas, the starts there sucked, so I didn't get any, but I expected that and the place with the good starts closes at 8.

It was more money than I should have spent, but no the fuck way was I turning my nose up at that much good tp.

I had salad with dinner! And bagel sandwiches so good I nearly orgasmed. Toasted everything bagels, soft and fresh. Whipped philly chives cream cheese and a slice of swiss melted. Fresh lettuce. An extremely ripe, juicy, flavorful heirloom tomato sliced up and the seeds carefully buried in the garden in hopes of volunteers. Omnomnom.

I also managed to brain myself but good with a falling lamp. The crack when it hit was alarming, the bump is massive, and it hurts. I may or may not be mildly concussed. squirrel says my pupils seem okay. Plan is to keep an eye out. Really, I'm safer here than going to get checked given the situation p at the hospital.

Speaking of which, the hospital mass mailed a letter trying to convince us the whistleblower is lying and it's perfectly safe up there. Riiiiight. This hospital is dodgy for a whole bunch of reasons and I haven't trusted them for decades. Obviously I can't verify the whistleblower account myself, but I trust the reporting there a lot more than I trust admin. It's not like one really has a choice unless one has time to drive down to Mount Vernon for their significantly better hospital, so.... Yeah.
