Dear Yuletide Author Letter 2020
Oct. 26th, 2020 04:23 amDear Yuletide Author: Thank you so much for writing something for me! I'm very much looking forward to reading whatever you come up with.
Some things I like: Emotional interaction, banter, worldbuilding, things that happen around the edges of canon.
Things I don't like: This year, I would really like at least a moderately happy ending. Angst and explorations of canon trauma are fine, although I'd prefer no on-screen sexual violence.
Ethan of Athos: I've always wanted to see more of Ethan and Terrence's relationship (romantic or platonic; either is fine). I'm interested in how their different personalities and backgrounds make them surprisingly complementary and offer them both things they need. (Terrence's response to Ethan's open acceptance is clear in the book, but after spending his adult life with Janos I also bet Ethan is not going to get tired of a competent, reliable partner any time soon.) But those differences also probably leave them spending a lot of time staring at each other in baffled confusion because they just do not have the context and don't know what questions to ask to get it. I'd just really like to see some of them working through that, whether it's the two of them getting to know each other on the trip to Beta Colony, Ethan helping Terrence deal with the foreign territory that is Athos, or the two of them sorting out their romantic signals.
Hellspark: I really like Om im, and have always wanted to know how Tocohl's distracting next meeting with him went--bonus points if Maggy is trying Very Helpfully to get them together. Aside from that, though, I am just generally fond of Maggy and Tocohl and their relationship, and would be happy to see anything featuring them—another cultural clash for Tocohl to judge, Maggy trying to figure out Weird Human Stuff with Tocohl's help, family time with Bayd and Shandon, whatever.
Tam Lin: I have loved this book since forever—I love the beautiful language and the literary references, the relationships between the characters, the way the slow-burn magical plot keeps mixing eerily with the mundane-but-still-interesting college events. I'm interested in the idea of what the events of the book looked like from Thomas' perspective, or more bits and pieces of Janet's slow confused realization that Something Is Wrong Here, but I'd also love Janet and Thomas dealing with things post-canon, worrying about to how to protect their baby, writing that book about the ghosts that Janet talks about, or just trying to cope with the rest of their time at Blackstock—imagine knowing that your teacher is the queen of Faerie and almost sacrificed your lover to hell, and still having to study for her exams! I'm also very fond of Molly, Christina, and Robin, and would be happy to see any or all of them in the story. But honestly, I will love anything written for this book.
New Mutants: Mostly I'm familiar with the original '80s series here, though if you're interested in doing something with the later material, go for it. My requested characters were Dani Moonstar, Rahne Sinclair, and/or Illyana Rasputin (not necessarily all three; if you'd prefer to focus on just one of them, that's fine). I love all of these girls and would be happy with pretty much anything for them--intense emotional drama, relationship conversations, adventures in time/outer space/Limbo/absolutely wherever, or just hanging out and having what passes for a regular day for teenage mutants. Also, the three requested characters are my favorites, but I love the whole New Mutants team; feel free to use as many of them as you would like (and Kitty Pryde as well). I would be happy with either genfic or romance; I don't have any particular preferred pairings if you go for romance (and the subtext is thick on the ground in all directions, here).
