Pro and Free Functionality

• The app offers both free and paid (“Pro”) functionalities. Free functionalities can be used without purchasing a license, provided that the user is a non-business user. Pro functionalities require a valid Pro license.
• Our goal is to offer genuinely useful free features that remain fully functional. Non-business users who do not need Pro features—and who choose not to support development by purchasing a license—are welcome to use the app in free mode. The app will not display pop-up purchase requests or intrusive ads.

Trial Period

• The app includes a 14-day trial period designed to allow you to evaluate the full functionality of the app—including Pro features—and to ensure compatibility with your hardware and software environment.
• After the 14-day trial expires, Pro functionalities will be disabled.
• Some Pro-only settings or changes made during the trial period may remain active to ensure a smooth transition from Pro to free mode (for example, custom virtual screens or smooth resolution settings will persist until you perform a reinstall, system upgrade, or hardware change).
• Please use the trial period to confirm that the app meets your needs, as there is no refund option.

Pro License Price and Purchase Process

• The purchase price, currency, and applicable tax levels (Sales Tax or VAT) depend on your purchase location. These are automatically suggested by our third-party payment provider (Paddle Inc.) based on your IP address but can be customized during the checkout process. Any adjustments made during checkout (due to currency, FX rates, or tax differences) are your responsibility, so please ensure you set your location according to applicable regulations.
• You may add business details and a VAT number (required for VAT returns) during or after checkout.
• Paddle Inc. acts as the reseller for KodeON (Kodeon Software Limited, the maker of this app). Paddle provides the in-app and online purchasing experience, handles invoicing, manages payment methods, licenses, activations, and refunds (subject to our refund policy). For any issues regarding these areas, you may consult Paddle’s buyer support.

Pro License Conditions

• Licenses are valid for the current major version of the app. Major version upgrades may require a new license purchase, an upgrade license, or, in some cases, may allow continued use of the previous version.
• The license does not expire for the current major version (i.e., it is not a subscription). When a new major version is released, you are not forced to cease using the previous version.

License Conditions for Business Users

• Businesses that use the app in any capacity (even if only utilizing free functionalities) beyond the trial period are required to purchase a Pro license. Although the app does not enforce this requirement programmatically, businesses are expected and kindly requested to comply with these license terms.
• Businesses may choose to interpret the license as either per user or per machine—whichever is more appropriate for their situation. In both cases, licenses are transferable between users and computers.
• For volume licensing (25+ computers), please contact the developer via the app’s Discord channel or at info@kodeonsoftware.com.
• Non-profit organizations, charities, and similar entities are not considered businesses under these terms and may use the free version of the app.
• If your workplace does not provide BetterDisplay but allows you to install it on your business computer—or if you are a BYOD user, private entrepreneur, or freelancer—you may classify yourself as a non-business user and use the app in either free mode.

Refund Policy and Withdrawal After Purchase

• The developer offers a generous 14-day trial period for you to evaluate the app and decide whether the Pro version meets your needs.
• Because of this trial period, all purchases are final, and refunds are generally not available. By downloading the app and activating your license, you waive the right to withdraw after purchase.
• The EU right of withdrawal does not apply, as the app is available for immediate use.
• In cases of license related technical issues (e.g., not receiving a license number, activation failures, or duplicate billing), you are entitled to a refund if the problem cannot be resolved.

Compatibility Issues

• Due to the vast number of hardware and software configurations, the developer cannot guarantee that the app will work perfectly on every system. We strongly recommend using the trial period to verify compatibility with your specific setup.
• The app is highly dependent on macOS and utilizes undocumented OS features. Consequently, the developer cannot guarantee that the app or any specific functionality will work properly on every new version of macOS. While Apple continually enhances macOS, these changes can occasionally break functionality.
• Compatibility issues generally do not qualify for refunds; however, refunds may be considered on a case-by-case basis if warranted.
• The app leverages less common technologies (such as the DDC/CI protocol for hardware control and EDID override capabilities, which might affect display timings and communication). While properly implemented and thoroughly tested hardware should not be damaged—even by erroneous settings—some devices with inherent firmware issues or substandard design may experience temporary or permanent damage (including becoming “bricked”). The developer cannot accept responsibility for such occurrences. Please use the app and its features with appropriate caution.

Support

• The developer is committed to supporting the user community by responding to GitHub Issues, participating in Discussions, and answering questions on the Discord channel. However, please note that resources are limited and support is provided on a voluntary basis—owning a free or Pro license does not guarantee personalized support.
• While bug fixes and issue resolutions are a priority, they are not guaranteed.
• The app is provided “as-is.” The Pro license does not include dedicated support time, and no service-level agreement (SLA) or guarantee exists regarding bug fixes.
• If you have questions or encounter issues, you may find quicker assistance by searching through Discussions, Issues on GitHub, or browsing the Discord channel.

Privacy Policy and Data Security

• Licensing is handled via the third-party provider Paddle. This means the app communicates with Paddle’s servers to verify licenses, check trial status, and facilitate checkout using Paddle’s SDK. Aside from data required by Paddle’s services, no additional information is transferred over the network. For more details, please see Paddle’s Privacy Policy.
• The app includes automatic crash detection and log collection, managed by Sentry. For details on Sentry’s privacy practices, please refer to Sentry’s Privacy Policy. Crash logs do not contain personal data but may include information about your hardware and software environment.
• The app provides an option to opt out of all network communications.
• The developer does not build any marketing lists (there is no marketing opt-in) or maintain a usage database that collects unique or non-unique identifiers—except for what is collected by Paddle and Sentry for license management and crash analysis.
• Aside from Paddle and Sentry, the only other network communication is performed by the built-in updater (Sparkle), which retrieves update metadata and downloads updates from GitHub.

Pro License and App Versions

• Pro access for app version v2.x is a free upgrade for users who purchased v1.x Pro.
• Pro access for app version v3.x is a free upgrade for users who purchased v2.x Pro.
• Users who purchased Pro before the first v2.x preview release date (June 14, 2023) must purchase a new license to use v3.x. (Note: While this requirement is stated, the app currently does not enforce it to simplify the upgrade process and accommodate users who may not be able to immediately support development with a new purchase.)
• Licenses purchased for v2.x and v3.x can be used to activate all older versions (downgrades are supported for compatibility purposes).

No decisions yet. :) Things might mostly stay as it is with some price changes (?) to offset both increase in functionality and the effect of inflation. Or it might be a good idea to introduce a subscription based alternative (as many apps seem to do nowadays) while keeping a higher priced one-off purchase option for the v2.x version. I definitely wouldn't go full subscription as I know many hate subscriptions (honestly - myself included) even though every business guy I talked to says this's what makes most sense for long-term sustainibility. Also, things need to stay reasonable - so if the app now costs $15 it will obviously not cost $150 all of a sudden... :)

I feel the app did not reach its full original vision with v1.x, that is why I decided to give v2.x version as a free update to those who already got v1.x.

Just to let you know, various countries, like Germany, give every citizen the right to receive a refund within 14 (might differ for other countries) days after purchase. This law overrides anything else. So your section saying that all purchases are final might apply to some countries, but definetly not all.

Right, thanks for the info! I think the app's policy is more relaxed than this regulation since you do not even have to purchase the app at all to use it for the first 14 days (without limitations or any annoying nag screens). Users are actively encouraged to utilize the trial and try the app before buying it. Regarding the EU regulation afaik it is explicitly stated that online goods and computer software is except if the downloaded content was put to any use. In practice if somebody (despite the very generous trial opportunity and the license terms) asks for a refund especially when the app was not activated or it is obvious that there was a mistake on the buyer's part, the refund requests are never denied.

But: since managing refunds is a resource intensive manual process and not really the most optimal use of the sole developer's time behind this app, I really recommend everybody to utilize of the lengthy trial to make sure the app is worthy of purchasing (or its developer for support). :)

You are right, but the business is supposed to clarify to the user that the regular withdrawal right does not apply since the purchase can be enjoyed immediately. I am not sure if Paddle does this as part of the checkout.

In my online bank it says that I "may" have a subscription for this app, marked to paid "monthly"(!!!) with the next payment marked as due three days ago, but not actually paid, although the bank can't seem to tell for sure whether it is a subscription or a one-off payment, and asked me to confirm whether it is one or the other. Somewhat nervously I clicked the "this was a one-off payment" button.

This is extremely confusing, and it is rather alarming that the bank was not given clearer information from paddle.net

Can you somehow get paddle to fix this? Surely they can make this less ambiguous somehow.

The app is not subscription based so it's rather difficult to have a subscription for this app. 😉 I think it's probably a bank specific issue - they are trying to be proactive I guess and give users some guidance (or add a degree of confusion...) - since Paddle sells subscription based apps as well, they flag all Paddle charges as potentially subscription things maybe? Not sure.

If you migrated your Mac, then you might simply need to hit deactivate anyway and activate again. Migration will leave the license code field filled and make it look like the app is activated but since the machine identifier was changed, in reality it is not. This is a minor bug in the Paddle SDK.

For a home Mac, with several people each having their own account on it, is one license enough so that everyone can use it?

Hi there, activations are tied to hardware identifiers, so multiple users on a single Mac should be able to activate the app (except for some special technical circumstances). Let me know if you have a trouble with this.

Previously, the license terms allowed multiple activations for personal use. However, due to misuse by unauthorized resellers (scalpers), this was revised a while ago. Unfortunately, some individuals exploited the licensing flexibility by purchasing keys, often with academic or student discounts, dividing up the single personal license into multiple fake "sublicenses" exploiting the multiple activation availability, then reselling them to unsuspecting users for a profit. In some regions, this practice became so widespread that it rivaled legitimate purchases.

Our data shows that most users require only one activation, a smaller group occasionally needed two, while about 1% (+ scalpers) 3 or more. But many of these extra activations typically happened when upgrading to a new Mac and forgetting to deactivate the license on the old one. To accommodate this, we introduced a “rolling activation” feature in newer app versions, which automatically deactivates the oldest activation when a new one is initiated. This eliminates the need for manual deactivation during device migration and further decreases the need for multiple activations.

Currently, although the license terms does not specify (implying 1 activation for personal use), the system silently does allow up to two activations per license for personal use. This is not publicly stated and is not guaranteed to work because we have implemented a monitoring system to detect and prevent unauthorized reselling. In rare cases, this system may mistakenly flag legitimate users, limiting the max activation count to 1. However, most users will experience no issues when activating the license on two devices.

Please note that no licenses are fully deactivated even by the monitoring system, even in cases of suspected reselling, however activation for these keys are limited to 1. Multiple-times resold (or leaked) keys may encounter activation issues because of this limit and also activation conflicts due to the rolling activation mechanism, which unintentionally deactivates installations as multiple users compete for the same license slots. This makes using resold or otherwise leaked keys unreliable in practice.
