How do I add user to a github team, via email addresses using the GH API?

I can do this via the web ui and it works, but I am struggling to do it via the GH API/CLI.

Does anyone know if its possible to do via the APi ?

Via the UI it works.

Via the API it doesnt seem possible. $username is a variable hoding an email address.

I have tried using the org invite route, but receive an error because the user is already an org member
