2025 Blanket

purplecat: A Crocheted Afghan Square Blanket (General:Crochet)
[personal profile] purplecat

A large blanket on a double bed. The blanket is made from various crochet sqares in predominantly purple and orange colours.

This is the 2025 Mooglycal blanket. I was still attempting to use up the stash which, it transpired, had mostly orange and purple wool in it - not the most auspicious combination but there is now at least a lot less of it than there was and all that really bright orange has gone. The general concept was vertical stripes of red/orange and purple/pink with the darker colours at the top and lighter colours at the bottom. It didn't really work, in part because there was just so much of some colours. Anyway, I have decided to actually have a colour scheme next year since the stash is now under control (well at least that bit of the stash that involves the wool I use for making these blankets).

Annoying side effect of eye goo: I have to maintain a 'correct' sleep hygiene and it's improving my life XD

I'm staying up a little later but I'm falling asleep sooner after I go to bed because distractions are physically less possible.

Last week I was in the middle of reading a fic and just had a little more to go and decided to read in bed, so I put in the goo and then blinked enough to be able to mostly see and read. And I woke up in the early hours with eye pain, and it's the kind of pain that is a significant deterrent, but just an annoyance. I repeated the experiment later and ended up with the same thing. So I can't just 'rub the cream in' and have it work. I can listen to all the podfics podcasts and such, but I will fall asleep to those, where I can stay up reading.

Yes. Memes are indeed fun.

hah my closest book was Nghi Vo's Mammoths at the Gates, which ends at 120 pages.

"I stared down into it, no lights burning at its heart, no voices raised in song, while Rencki tried to call up the shuttle to Kiskol."
Slow Gods by Claire North.

Well, um. That sounds bleak? 2026 really needs to be nicer to me.

Positive note, I do like the writing.

+ I'm going back to work tonight, just to sleep on board so I can get cracking nice and early before everybody else arrives. It'll probably be freezing but hopping in bed wearing wool should sort that out. Right now I am of course procrastinating to the max. I have not packed a single item yet. At least my packages have been collected, the laundry and washing up done, and I've bought the necessities. The plan was to finish early so I could have a nice bath? *sighs at self* Man, you'll love that bath. Make that bath happen!

eta ugh my dad gave me anxiety about whether the key would be there, so now I won't be going on the boat until tomorrow and I'm grumbly about it. I wanted stuff to be ready dammit.

+ One thing I did finish is my holiday quest list in Dreamlight Valley, most important of all lolol. Gotta get those holiday decoration items, so I can boot it back up next December and once again not actually get around to decorating all that much. But it does make Kid Me happy still, wandering around with Belle and Wall-E, the most low stakes gameplay there is, collecting pretty holiday items. (they did actually sneak in an extra holiday thing that started after New Years and I'm cranky about it.)

+ I should also do my big yearly tarot spread, but I may not have the brains. Maybe I'll just lay them out and take pictures for later.

+ Letterboxd's In Memoriam tribute this year really hit me in the feels. We lost some lovely creatives.

+ Discord is hosting a survey to see what you think of them adding AI bullshit here. Feel free to stop by and tell them nope.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. I'd love to see more people share things that bring them joy in their journals, no matter how small. We gotta grab what we can.
2. If you can't quite think of something shiny to share atm: memes are fun!
3. And if anyone has shared something that has brought you joy, please tell them so <3
(sneaky 4. but please do tell Discord to go fuck themselves with their AI bs.)

An image of red demons on a totem poll. A tribe of native Americans with feathered headresses is in the background walking towards an English village.

This is the cover from Lawrence Miles' Christmas on a Rational Planet New Adventure. This was his debut novel. I recall very little about it. I think many people immediately recognised him as someone with an exciting suffeit of ideas, but sadly, I can not claim to have been among them.

The holidays felt like a marathon this year and I'm only now just feeling like I have a chance to stop and breathe. Not bad at all, but I just never had that moment of recharge.

It was a good holiday. Friends got married then we spent a week with my family. Then home for New Years and a little bit of time to chill before back to work. I got the waterfall dress finished well in time for the wedding and was very happy with it. It fit in nicely with the vibe and was very comfortable!

I'm very slowly cutting out my next sewing project - a jumper in black and gray plaid flannel.

Monday was back to work and I took advantage of the boss till being away to catch up on a whack of scanning and filing, and putting away all the items that have ended up at my place to be used as gifts. What was going to be my decorative office shelf now looks like a mini game store XD I'd be more annoyed but I'm getting a home office allowance, so technically they're paying my rent for the room.

Boss was back today and it was nice to get some idea of a rhythm again.

We watched the first three episodes of Heated Rivalry before the Holidays break. My government funded hockey yaoi ^_^ (I do somewhat twitch at the use of the word yaoi, as to me that means anime, but I acknowledge that if you start calling it hockey slash there is some ambiguity XD )

We came back after the holidays to finish the last three episodes. It was lovely. I see why everyone is so ridiculous about it. I then spent a bunch of time watching straight-dude youtube channels do reviews and they were lovely. There were tears. It was really positive and encouraging and it's fun to feel shiny new fannish about something that is shiny new for everyone (I'm having shiny new moments with DC, but that's not a shiny new fandom in any way).

In the way that faandom exists to fill in the gaps, I find I'm not looking for the smutty fics there, but rather the post-show found family fics, and the team moments. And stuff that actually focuses on the hockey :D

The Gentleman Caller also got me a "Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird" shirt XD

--

On the DC front I'm enjoying my comics and went to the shop to pick up this week's comics before we went off to dinner to celebrate the Gentleman Caller's birthday. One of the things I was looking for wasn't on the shelf, and it turns out it had an unexpected number of people in for it so they had sold out. BUT! the owner had a stash and let me have one from there. He said when he sees something selling quick, he'll put some aside so good customers who aren't able to show up immediately still have a chance. I was perfectly willing to wait until they could order me in a copy but it was nice. I got a good grade in buying comics, which is normal to want and possible to achieve XD
(I feel like it's a bit of a reward for the time when I impulsively bought a comic for a kid clearly trying to decide on which comics in his box to buy and which ones would have to wait for his next allowance)

Dinner was at a restored art deco department store restaurant, from back when high end department stores had fancy dining options. It was a lovely meal and excellent atmosphere.

--

And now the Gentleman Caller is cooking dinner and I'm finally getting groceries ordered and have high hopes of actually doing the December HouseHold Math tonight. And then maybe I'll feel ready for the new year :D

A note for participants - I am very behind on reading and commenting other people's responses, and I feel bad about it. I have deep seated anxiety around interacting with people I don't know, and I need to be able spend time and focus to read properly - which I will have over the weekend, and I plan to dedicate some time to enjoying and commenting posts then. Sorry if I come to conversations later than everyone else.

Reading, Listening, Watching

Jan. 7th, 2026 03:12 pm
purplecat: Books. (General:Books)
[personal profile] purplecat
Reading: I just finished the Doctor Who Reader. The later essays were a lot more accessible, but more by the way of personal accounts and more in the mode of fan writing than the earlier chapters. They feel more like things that could be/would be/are intended to be primary sources collated together for future academics than secondary sources. The whole is interesting and, hopefully, useful. I get quoted in one chapter though my identity is obfuscated as I was one of the interviewees.

Listening: Not much running this week, I do not like slippery surfaces for running, so not much listening. Currently I have Toby Hadoke in Indefinable Magic musing on the various actors in Doctor Who have been awarded M/O/CBEs or knighthoods etc. Toby is always entertaining but, it has to be said, this is not a subject that particularly grabs me.

Watching: B and I are currently feeling very listless about the vast choice of watching material available. We spend much time scrolling aimlessly through the listings. We started The Acolyte but found it too grim. We've discussed watching Midsomer Murders which seem like our kind of easy evening watching, but these start at season 22 on Disney so we will clearly need to investigate where earlier seasons can be found. We keep falling back on watching NCIS and miscellaneous food programmes on the BBC.

[personal profile] senmut's post at [community profile] cultivativity about considering why you make what you make and what you enjoy about it, made me think of icons and text. The more icons I made, the less text they had, because I'm straight up terrible at text. Best outcome to hope for is it doesn't actively make the icon look like crap. But text is fun though! I'd really really like to make a return to being a bit more of a smartass in my iconning. And get some more quotes in there! Maybe that'll be my iconning resolution for the year?

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Working at sea, I can't have any pets and that is the saddest thing, woe me. However, in delightful news, my dad has turned into a complete dog dad. He's wheeling them around in a stroller when they go to the mall!

Here's their official 2025 Christmas pic!
two small dogs with their tongues out, wearing scarves and santa hats.

And then my brother has two big floofs, but I could only find a picture of one. This is Luke (Leia is missing in action):
an orange cat is laying on the table in front of a Christmas tree and next to a holiday themed metal popcorn bucket.

+ My new memory foam pillow felt way too hard and high when I went to bed last night, but this morning I woke up to a soft, fluffy cloud. I may just have to wedge it under my back for a couple of minutes to warm it up in the evening (my bedroom is an icebox and I like it that way).

+ Did my Mystery Box challenge for [community profile] retro_icontest, the color being orange, and obviously that means Scully and her royal mantle of hair!
