Hello, 2019! I had some really nice, low-key holidays.

My parents got me one of those reversible sequined pillows, with Cap on one side of the sequins and Iron Man on the other. It was flipped completely to Cap when I got it, but I've seen flip sequins products in stores and I know it's been quite the craze, so I suspected what it was and ran my hand down Cap's face, flipping it to Iron Man.

At that point my mom gasped, because she had no idea it could do that. She'd thought she was just buying me a nice Captain America pillow. Somehow the flip sequins craze has managed to pass her by!

I posted a gif set of me flipping the sequins and now it's become my most popular post on tumblr. I mean, I'm only talking about 1,500 notes, but I fly under the radar so that's a lot for me.

In other brushes-with-fandom-fame news, my XMFC Charles/Erik fic "Elpis" was recced on a popular fandom YouTube channel. It's here, about 3:15 into the video. She says really flattering things about my fic (even though I badly rushed the ending because it was an exchange fic and I am a procrastinator) and it has given me a boost in kudos. So I'm pretty happy about it.

So not only did I get a stunning secret_mutant gift this year, I also got TWO mutant madness gifts! I’ve never gotten a mutant madness fic before, so I’m over the moon.

Seriously, THREE lovely stories written for me!

Rise by [personal profile] littledust

This is about Angel surviving DoFP, and all the escapes she’s pulled off in her life. It’s full of gorgeous details and heart-wrenching character growth. It also features a heroic and compassionate Raven.

I am secretly obsessed with Erik’s astroid base as a concept, and this delightful story brings the base into XMFC-verse! Erik kidnaps/invites Charles to his new space station, but things don’t go smoothly. Funny and sweet!

Not to Touch the Earth by [personal profile] lilacsigil

This is a great action story about Angel narrowly escaping capture. Her brains and tenacity really shine here, and there are some great cameos from other Marvel characters.

And I wrote a fic!

Elpis, for [personal profile] lefaym, for their prompt of angry hurt/comfort for Charles and Erik. It features an airplane crash and discussions of greek mythology.

On Thursday I saw that [livejournal.com profile] luninosity was in Chicago for the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (PCA/ACA) conference, so I decided to embrace spontaneity (I so rarely do, after all!) and hop a bus to Chicago. I originally planned to meet her Friday morning, but I wasn't feeling well that day so we moved our plans to Saturday.

It was awesome! First of all, I got great exercize. The walk from my apartment to the Van Galder bus stop was 2.5 miles, and then I walked about 3 miles total in Chicago. The bus ride was fine - I mostly read a novel I picked up from the library called The Night Gwen Stacy Died, which is a romance/psychological thriller. As you can imagine the title caught my eye, and the back cover claimed it had Hitchcockian qualities, which sold me on it. I got about halfway through and it's very engrossing so far.

Anyway, Lunin and I met up, had pizza for lunch, and talked about all sorts of fandom and pop culture things, especially X-Men movie stuff. It was a lot of fun! I thought it would just be lunch, but she mentioned some of the panels that afternoon, so I decided to crash the conference and spend more time with her.

We went to a screening of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which I hadn't seen since it was in theaters. I had forgotten how delightful it was. I had also forgotten that Angelina Jolie plays a genderswapped Nick Fury, complete with eye patch and helicarrier.

Then we went to a panel on complicating ideas of good and evil in comic books. I was excited to see that several of the papers presented were about recent Marvel storylines -- Civil War, AvX, and Thor: The God Butcher. There was also one on the classic 80's Animal Man, which I haven't read but looks very interesting. It was kind of amazing to be at an acedemic conference where a panelist was describing Civil War: The Confession to the audience.

After that I had to leave! But I had so much fun with Luninosity. And I felt that by traveling on short notice I'd unlocked some kind of YOLO achievment or something.

Then on Sunday I went and saw Frozen with my dad and aunt, and celebrated Easter with my parents. A wonderful weekend!

Oh, and I should mention that I'll be in Chicago again on the 25th -27th for C2E2, if anyone wants to meet up.

So a few weeks ago I read an XMFC big bang fic that described itself as a Moomintroll AU. I thought Moomintrolls were some mythological creature of which I was unfamiliar, but wikipedia helpfully informed me that they are creatures in a popular series of books and comic strips, written and illustrated by a Swedish-Finn woman named Tove Jansson, and published from 1945 to 1993. The books have spawned movies, tv shows, music, and even a theme park. The more you know!

The fic (and its art) turned out to be good. Like, really good. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. So the next time I went to the library I searched for some Moomin books. lots of rambling and a few scans under the cut )

So I very much recommend both the fic and Finn Family Moomintroll.

1. I visited a shooting range with a friend who is an ex-marine. He showed me how to load and fire a Smith & Wesson 45 caliber and a Sig Sauer 9mm. I found the experience interesting, if a bit nerve-wracking. The closest thing to a firearm I've used in my adult life is a paintball gun, although I did do a riflery class once at summer camp when I was ten or eleven.

I preferred the Sig Sauer. The Smith & Wesson had a much bigger kick, and I found myself flinching as I pulled the trigger. Also, I actually smelled gun powder after firing the S&W, but didn't smell anything with the Sig.

I have no interest in owning a gun, but I like learning the basic mechanics. A lot of my fandoms have characters who use guns (less so in my superhero fandoms, but repulsor rays and firearms have parallels) and I like being able to write from experience. My friend also owns a revolver, so I might go back to the range to try out that.

2. Heather Dale concert! The venue was Pegasus Games, and they'd set up their gaming room for the event, so Heather was performing in front of posters for D&D and World of Warcraft. It was a very intimate event, as you can imagine; I think they had 50 seats. I brought my dad and aunt, and in addition to the three high school friends I sat with I recognized several people in the audience from the few SCA events I've attended.

The concert was completely lovely. It was part of her Ancient Yule tour, and many of the songs had a Christmas or winter connection. Throughout the show she joked and smiled and really just glowed. Another singer, a woman called S J Tucker was playing with them, and they did one of her songs too. I ended buying a CD of each artist. (I might upload a couple of songs soon.)

3. I finished a fic! The Properties of Pineapple, which was supposed to be some pineapple-flavored fluff/PWP for [livejournal.com profile] luninosity, but morphed into something with angst and a bizarre pineapple-related plot point. As you can probably tell I have mixed feelings about the final result, but I'm happy that I finally finished something, and some of Charles and Erik's dialogue was really fun to write. Now I need to focus on my Secret Mutant fic! Which will have much more action, but will probably be equally bizarre. *sigh*
