I've decided to write up a post for just the Moomin-related parts of my long weekend in Chicago so I can link it to Moomin fandom spaces. If you want to read about all aspects of the trip, read this post instead.

I feel a bit guilty because the end-of-year gift I got from my boss is turning out to be extremely nice for me, but I suspect it's pretty useless for several if not most of my coworkers. It's an annual membership for Madison BCycle, an electric bicycle rental service.

I lucked out in that there's a docking station about a 6-7 min walk from my house, and plenty by the hospital where I work, so I can start riding my bike to work again when the weather is nice. I used to bike to work when I lived with my parents, but my house is tiny and has no garage and there's no good place to store my bike. This solves that issue!

That said, many of my coworkers don't even live in Madison. I suppose they could use it before or after work, or for a weekend ride after driving into town. But this does feel like a gift that has a much narrower niche than is appropriate for a staff-wide gift. I just lucked into being in that small niche.

I'm feeling pretty good fandom-wise at the moment. I'm working on a fic for a prompt fest type thing, and I'm ready to submit two vids to VidUKon. I've got a premiere vid and I've decided which one to send in for Vidder's Choice. I didn't make one for the themed premiere show, but that's fine. I didn't have an idea about which I was excited enough.

Jen and I went to a Matt Nathanson concert in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. I did a writeup at the time but forgot to post it. Here it is now, under the cut:

Well, I meant to post much more in 2024 than I did, so I guess now I’ll post a short recap and try to post more in 2025.

What did I do in 2024?

Jen and I went to Toronto, which I posted about here, but we also went to Las Vegas in February. It was my first time there! We stayed at Planet Hollywood, we went to Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart, saw a Knights hockey game and Beatles LOVE, and we played some blackjack and ate at some fancy restaurants. I made a slideshow of some pictures Jen and I took, which you can see here.

Immediately after Las Vegas I had a hysterectomy, and honestly, A++. They'd found some pre-cancerous cells so the options were this or much more frequent pap smears for monitoring. The surgery went very smoothly; I didn’t even have to stay the night. I got four weeks off from work, and I felt reasonably good most of those four weeks, so it was like a blessedly long vacation. And now I don’t have periods!

Jen, Rachel and I went to a few shows - Postmodern Jukebox, Vienna Teng, and My Brother My Brother and Me. We also saw a performance of an abridged version of the Torch Song Trilogy by a local theater group and it was really good. We also did some escape rooms.

I made 8 fanvids! That’s the most fanvids I’ve ever made in one year, and I doubt I’ll do that again anytime soon. All except two were for virtual cons so I guess virtual cons were also a big part of 2024. I also wrote a fic but I posted it anonymously because I’m shy. Oh, and I wrote a short essay for a vidding zine, which you can read here.

Warnings: Some stuttery cuts, LotR-typical violence, and Gollum
Summary: Gollum's twisted relationship with the One Ring.
Notes: So... at last year's DC-Slash Con, on a panel about the struggle to find songs for vidding, a joke was made about using a song for a Gollum vid. This led to more jokes about everyone sending a Gollum premiere to the next DC-Slash Con. And then the jokes became not-jokes.

This was my contribution to the absurdly high number of Gollum vids at DC-Slash Con's 2024 vidshow. Watching the comments of "ANOTHER ONE??" on Discord was a delight.

Fandom: Fellow Travelers (2023)

Summary: Marcus meets Frankie and falls in love.
Notes: I watched Fellow Travelers and found myself shipping Marcus/Frankie much more than the main couple. I was thinking of what 1950s songs would work for this pairing, remembered my parents' Nat King Cole greatest hits CD. The rest is history! This premiered at Escapade 34.5.
