We continue to advance public quality standards for plasma-derived medicinal products with the adoption of a new European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) general chapter, 2.6.42 – Test for procoagulant activity in immunoglobulin preparations, which will enter into force on 1 July 2027. Published in Ph. Eur. Issue 13.3 (October 2026), the chapter introduces three methods for the detection of procoagulant activity: a factor XIa-specific chromogenic substrate assay (CSA), alongside thrombin generation (TGA) and NAPTT assays. Together, these methods support the detection of potential procoagulant impurities that may affect product safety. Developed through collaborative scientific studies, this new text reflects our ongoing commitment to standardised, science-based methods that help ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of human immunoglobulin products across Europe. Contamination and deliberate adulteration involving ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) continue to present significant risks to patient safety worldwide. To support the detection and control of these toxic contaminants, a new analytical procedure for the determination of EG and DEG in Macrogols (Ph. Eur. monograph 1444) has been published in Pharmeuropa 38.3 for public consultation. The proposed revision introduces: ✅ A new gas chromatography procedure using an alternative stationary phase; ✅ A derivatisation step and internal standard approach; ✅ Revised specifications with individual limits for EG and DEG. These enhancements aim to strengthen analytical robustness and support the continued quality and safety of pharmaceutical excipients used in medicines. 🔴 Deadline: 30 September 2026 Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQDfGNum #TogetherForBetterHealthForAll 💪

🩸 Human plasma is essential to make life-saving medicines for people with rare, chronic and life-threatening conditions. However plasma collection in Europe remains insufficient to meet growing demand, resulting in a heavy reliance on imports and exposing patients to potential supply vulnerabilities. To support member states in addressing this public health challenge, the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM), Council of Europe has published a meeting report providing a comprehensive overview of the discussions and outcomes of the meeting "Plasma Supply Continuity stakeholder event" in Strasbourg on 26-27 March 2025. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eY7uVFHs
