This is a community for those who are fictosexual, fictoromantic, or somewhere on the spectrum of experiencing attraction to fictional characters. Non-ficto folk are welcome, but please be respectful!

What is the ficto spectrum?

If you experience genuine attraction - romantic, sexual or however you personally define it - to a fictional character, you may be on the ficto spectrum! Ficto refers to attraction to fictional characters; it can exist alongside or without attraction to real people. It is often considered an aspec identity but is not inherently so. Other terminology includes semificto, which refers to attraction to both real life human beings and fictional characters.

Rules
  •  If you are here to judge the real life morality of individuals based on their fictional interests, this is not really the community for you. Be respectful!
  • This community is for those aged 18 and over, due to the nature of this discussion. NSFW is allowed; however, please mark and cut NSFW posts.
  • There may be people who share your fictional partners here. Keep that in mind if you are someone who is uncomfortable with that; this is a community for everyone!
  • Please keep posts on topic of ficto-spec. However, feel free to share anything along those lines - fic of you and your f/o, fanart, whatever you'd like, as long as it is related at least somewhat to fictospec identity.
  • You can post an introduction if you'd like! You can use the following template, edit it or make your own entirely:

Fictosexuality, fictoromance, and fictophilia are terms that have recently become popular in online environments as indicators of strong and lasting feelings of love, infatuation, or desire for one or more fictional characters. This article explores the phenomenon by qualitative thematic analysis of 71 relevant online discussions. Five central themes emerge from the data: (1) fictophilic paradox, (2) fictophilic stigma, (3) fictophilic behaviors, (4) fictophilic asexuality, and (5) fictophilic supernormal stimuli. The findings are further discussed and ultimately compared to the long-term debates on human sexuality in relation to fictional characters in Japanese media psychology. Contexts for future conversation and research are suggested.
This is the abstract of Fictosexuality, Fictoromance, and Fictophilia: A Qualitative Study of Love and Desire for Fictional Characters, an article published in Frontiers in Psychology, a peer reviewed open access journal.

(I haven't read the whole thing because I'm on vacation but I've got it bookmarked to get back to as soon as the new semester starts next week! I wanted to share it with everyone now so I don't forget to later.)

What do y'all do with your fictional others? I've been struggling with feeling happy with how I yumeship (aka barely ^^'). But recently have gotten a spark of inspiration to think up how I'd come into their lives? I guess? It's going in fanfiction terratory. Been making a google doc with stuff about myself & my F/Os (ship-names, relationship type, perhaps tropes our relationship we have once I get it more set up).

Here's some ideas of what I could do with my F/Os. But feel free to add your own activities or ideas!
  • Drawing my sona doing things/being in love with my F/Os.
    • & making sub-sonas for diffrent settings when needed.

  • Making playlists for my F/Os.

  • Making technically self-insert fanfic.
    • & worldbuilding stuff for those fanfics.

  • Make a site about my F/Os.

  • & Fantasize about my F/Os.

Check in!

About your connection to fictospec identity:
We've always been more connected to fiction then we've been to irl people. We've angsted about it & only in recent years made connections again with irl people. But we've come to want to explore our fictional crushes in a less-judgemental approach, even if those relationships would be unhealthy irl (cause its still fiction, we're not actually hurting anyone with it). If we we're to label ourselves, we're semificto with a ficto lean.

Fictional others, if applicable:
Henry's (he/they/it/fae/xe/vi) has two romantic* F/Os; Alma Madrigal from Encanto (in a qpr/pale kinda way) & the hollow knight / pure vessel from Hollow Knight. Meulin Leijon (she/they/kit/mew) also has two; Ryoma Hoshi from DanganRonpa & Calypso from EPIC The Musical. Not sure how to include Nagito Komaede from DanganRonpa in this, but we want to mom the shit outta him.
