Edit: I haven't added entries to this page for a long time, but I think it's worth keeping stickied, just as an introduction.
Any blog should start off by introducing its subject, but in theory, Utilitarianism is quite simple. It’s a theory of ethics under which you should take whatever actions will lead to the greatest happiness for everyone involved. There are no other rules or restrictions–just make as many people as happy as you can make them.
So to make this more interesting, let’s go over some of the things Utilitarians DON’T have.( Read more... )

Jan. 16th, 2026 08:47 pmUmineko is hands-down the most fucked-up fantasy story I’ve ever read. I got to the point where Battler refuses to speak to Beatrice anymore, and I sympathize with his position after that last torture-murder. The main reason I’m still reading is the sunk cost fallacy.
I specify “fantasy” because no impossible magical crime will ever be as disturbing as Lolita.

Jan. 16th, 2026 05:31 pmSomewhat caricatured because I’m too annoyed to represent it charitably:
A: [Something about how “TME” is a bad term]
B: You’re transphobic and don’t understand what it’s like to be a trans woman.
A: I’m a trans woman.
B: You’re a transphobic trans woman and that’s why trans women hate you.
There’s a lot more going on there, like B accusing A of being a Gamergater, but I think that’s the thrust of it.
What frustrates me is that it doesn’t seem like there’s a point where you could get B to evaluate A’s statement as an opinion rather than as a weapon of the enemy. You could find other trans women who agree with A, and you could find trans women who agree more with B but think A is just wrong rather than bigoted. But no matter how many you find, B could just keep saying all of them are transphobic and declare victory.

Jan. 14th, 2026 06:44 pmI saw a video arguing that the protagonist of Black Souls is supposed to be a bad person even at 0 sin. He doesn't really care about any of these women; he just thinks they can fill the hole in his life. I disagreed with this take. His relationships are pretty shallow at first, but he bonds with some of them in their endings.
Black Souls 2 makes the protagonist more obviously transactional. He treats women as vending machines--currency goes in, sexual favors come out.
On the one hand, if the point of Black Souls really was supposed to be that the protagonist didn't care, then I clearly missed that. On the other hand, the blatancy of Black Souls 2 feels like it's objectifying women to make a point about how the protagonist objectifies women.

Jan. 12th, 2026 06:32 pmIt looks like my cousin’s ex-boyfriend the Piece-of-Shit Abuser will finally lose the right to unsupervised visitation with his kids. He keeps trying to get my cousin denied custody, alleging everything from drunkenness to child molestation, and this time when the cops showed up, my niece told them about the times he’d held a pillow over her face to shut her up. That took way too fucking long.
My father said CPS might not follow through unless my cousin gets it in writing that POS is dangerous. If I prayed, I’d be begging God that my cousin take action for once in her life instead of just letting things happen around her.

Jan. 8th, 2026 01:37 pmI think guro has a lot of artistic potential that I can't access because I don't share the fetish. So whenever I see an interesting-looking guro game, I recommend it to others to see if I can get it a little more notice. On that note, take a look at Cyan Brain.

Jan. 7th, 2026 03:28 amIt’s kind of wild that while the PC in chapter 5 of Runes of Pandemonium is busy dismantling slavery, she never makes a comment one way or another about the eugenics program that’s also going on. She does comment on the project to kidnap humans and turn them into robots, reluctantly admitting conversions should be voluntary even though turning humans into robots is her fetish, but she has no input on the project to breed smarter humans who’ll make for smarter robots than kidnapping some poor sap.

Jan. 6th, 2026 06:50 pmReading a Pathfinder fic, and it does a good job of establishing how tribalism, religious conflict, and totalitarian governments lead to some races being viewed as “the bad ones” despite none being inherently evil.
Reading the reference materials it links to, and this shit sounds obscenely racist. “This volume offers an indispensable analysis of the most vicious killers of all – orcs. Born and bred for war, they are an awful, brutish, violent species and, despite their constant infighting and backstabbing, their horde armies remain a dire threat to all races.”

Jan. 2nd, 2026 08:16 pmThere’s a type of person who thinks they never need to question what they’ve already decided the truth is. I wrote the Pure as a hypothetical of what would happen if that type fought reality and won, so thoroughly remaking their section of the universe that unwanted concepts like homosexuality can’t exist there. This book presents Terolan as that type, fighting reality and refusing to recognize just how badly he’s losing. The scientific arm of the labor camp seems to be built entirely around finding ways to reassure Terolan he’s winning, because he’ll kill you if you say otherwise.

Jan. 2nd, 2026 11:45 amI realized the reason I’m reluctant to have conversations while my brother is around. No matter what I say, I’m afraid his reply will make me feel like my statement was stupid and I shouldn’t have opened my mouth. It never feels like he’s distorting my statement or even being particularly rude; it just feels like he made an accurate observation that somehow undercut me. But he’s the only person I’ve ever talked to who can consistently do this to me, so I’m clearly not the important factor here.
My mother once told me my brother is sad he can’t reconcile with me. I don’t really give a shit.

Jan. 2nd, 2026 11:31 amI read that post that says Hallmark Christmas movies are like that because they make depressed Christian housewives feel better about their life choices. Anyone have an explanation for why the romance subplot in every modern trad-published fantasy novel is like that? Why does every heroine who thinks of herself as strong and independent need a seemingly cruel but secretly kind dom who makes her feel happy to be submissive? Do Christian housewives read fantasy novels? Do their husbands know about this forbidden Satanic literature?
