Next up, Sparla. The two wonderfully caustic blondes, the oldest and the youngest in the family. Both are deeply driven by their romantic relationships, giving their heart wholly, and both are incredibly perceptive and witty, as skilled at gutting with a sharp turn of phrase as with a blade. For all that, they’re very different, and in some areas (like the family cult) are diametrically opposed. By the time Spike is Turned, Darla is more than done with her own era of finding excitement in starting chaos with vampire hunters and angry mobs, but Spike will insist on making his own rash mistakes fun. These two mostly exist in negative space. They lived together for at least twenty years, but we barely see them interact on screen, and they don’t have a single conversation or scene together between just the two of them. Of course, this means that they’re ripe fodder for fanworks, to fill out the shape of the relationship between these two deliciously compelling characters.

Rebcake perfectly captures Spike and Drusilla’s voices here, and the playful sensuality and loving affection between them. It’s at turns funny and hot enough to scorch Santa’s bum when he tries to come down the chimney.
