I have these characters, Vedya Ravenstone and her girlfriend Kohana Sato. They became GFs almost by accident; Vedya was practicing flirting on Kohana, and it worked. Vedya took advantage of this and pursued a relationship with Kohana. It grew from a relationship of convenience to something a lot more. Several years later, they are still dating.

The thing is, I want them to have an amicable breakup. I feel Vedya was very good for Kohana, helped Kohana deal with some of her abandonment issues among other issues, and they will remain friends, but they started dating in what was essentially the 7th and 8th grades, respectively. Relationships in that age range tend to not last very long. More importantly are three things:

1. Vedya is a human and Kohana is a Kitsune; Kohana's true form is a talking fox with hands and a larger head than foxes usually have. And it's been strongly hinted at that Kitsune and humans in romantic relationships with each other are... how to put it... basically doomed to be platonic, because Kitsune and human genitals don't fit together. Which, some people are okay with. But Vedya... she's the kind of person who is going to get more and more frustrated at the lack of sex the older she gets. She's bi, and like her parents she is polyamorous, but she's only been in one relationship so far. It hasn't really come up yet because she's only like 15 as of book 7, and I'm unsure how frank to be about sexuality when it comes to minors. Obviously I am never explicit, but even as far as I do go to heavily imply things can occasionally make me worry I'm going too far for any potential future readers.
And obviously this is less of a concern for a lesbian couple anyway, but there are other concerns. Kitsune give milk, yes, but they don't have breasts like humans do. They have rows of teats, because they evolved from mundane foxes that ended up in Tirffiniol. So any breasts Kohana has on her human disguise are fake and not as sensitive as real ones. Also, because Kitsune are magical foxes, they don't share humanity's constant horniness and ability to have sex whenever. They have a mating season. They go into heat. Aaand also, as an adaptation to their long life-span, they only go into heat once every few decades. To further control their population growth, they have to pay their local lords or ladies for the privilege to have even a single child, often having to pay someone else for semen because... well, Kitsune are all women. A certain percentage of them are intersex women, and can sire children, but those who can generally are capitalizing on that by selling access to their semen. Kohana's mom paid so much to have Kohana that she never financially recovered from it. It is left unclear what her mom's wealth status was before having Kohana, but the various fees left her having to move into a very cheap apartment, and Kohana and her mom are still very poor.

2. Because Kohana is a Kitsune, she is very likely going to outlive Vedya. She's already technically in her 60's (with the same mental and emotional maturity as a human teenager), and is probably going to get to be at least a few hundred years old, maybe even 1000 years old. I haven't quite pinned down Kitsune lifespans yet.

3. Vedya doesn't feel romantic love. She 'plays the game' of romance for Kohana's sake, but yeah, she's aromanic. (But for complicated reasons does not consider herself good representation of an aromantic person. IYKYK.) She keeps this up without the two of them doing much together in terms of physical intimacy, mainly because she likes Kohana and doesn't want to hurt her feelings. But this situation can't possibly last forever. Vedya isn't really getting what she wants out of the relationship, but you'd never know it because so far she acts like it's fine, and nothing in the narration says otherwise. Which is my main problem: I don't know how to foreshadow them having an amicable breakup. I've been through amicable breakups, yet I don't know how to write them. I could easily write a normal breakup where they argue a lot and then break it off dramatically. I have considered having Vedya cheat on Kohana with someone else, but while Vedya can be impulsive at times, I feel like cheating on someone would be out of character for her.

The only thing I can think to do for an amicable breakup is to just have it come out of nowhere. Just, one day they're no longer dating, but they're still friends.

I mean... sure, yes, it occurred to me to just have them talk it out, make the decision together, and then tell their friends. But I don't know what to have them say. But whatever I end up doing, I think they should make the decision during one of the holidays, because they're both so busy with school stuff. Vedya especially, since Vedya is on the school dueling team. (Magical dueling, not the gun kind.)

Not even sure if I'm looking for advice or just venting, but eh, if you have advice, I'll listen to it.

Most folks who hear "dueling club" are going to think "swords" not guns.
