Dr. Henrik Sjögren, a Swedish ophthalmologist, discovered Sjögren’s disease in 1933. His birthday is now marked as World Sjögren's Day to raise awareness. Here are some essential facts about Sjögren’s disease, an autoimmune condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Sjögren’s is a systemic autoimmune disease that impacts the entire body, causing dryness, profound fatigue, chronic pain, and potential major‑organ involvement, among other symptoms. It occurs alone in half of the patients, and alongside other autoimmune diseases in the other half. Common overlaps include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and Scleroderma. Sjögren's cannot be diagnosed with a single test, so doctors need to do eye, dental, and blood exams. Key biomarkers are SS-A (Ro) and SS-B (La) antibodies found in 70% and 40% of Sjogren’s patients, respectively. On World Sjögren’s Day, let’s come together to not only raise awareness but also to foster greater understanding, empathy, and support for everyone affected by this disease. #WorldSjögrensDay #SjögrensDisease #Autoimmunity #AutoimmunityAwareness #PoweringPatientCare 1.
