Ellie was born within a government controlled zone after the infection outbreak. She was brought into the army and learning how to kill fireflies at a young age. At the age of 13. Her friend Riely appeared after disappearing for over six months saying that she had joined the fireflies. They pair went out and were both infected choosing to die together as the fungus took hold.

Ellie lived.

She was they given to the fireflies to then been taken to salt lake city so that they could find a cure. She was entrusted to Joel and their long journey fighting the infected and soldiers began. They made it to Salt Lake city and the price for the cure was Ellie's life. Having traveled together for so long Joel needed Ellie and wouldn't let her go. He stole her from the fireflies leaving none alive to chase after her and brought her back to where his brother and family lived in relative safety against the infected and bandits.
