Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

My One True Crossover pairing is Rumple from Once Upon a Time and Rowena from Supernatural, so any kind of fic or art for them would be great.

I still love the idea of an iZombie fic where Liv is on romance writer brain right after solving the Zombie High murder case, starts writing Zombie High slash fiction and Ravi has to read it.

Anything post-S2 of The Wilds, which was cancelled way before its time.

CAT icons.

Anything Sayid/Desmond from Lost.

Anything at all from Dark, From, School Spirits or Yellowjackets.

Speaking of, even just having people who know Dark or From and who I can ramble at about them would be great. It's hard to vent about how I've written myself into a corner while trying to rescue Mikkel from 1986 when no one knows the whole complexities of that family tree.

2026 Snowflake Challenge # 7

While we’re busy celebrating fandom, it’s good to remember to celebrate ourselves, too. Fandom is all of us! I know it’s often easier to talk about what we like about other people than it is to talk nicely about ourselves, but challenge yourself here --

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

And please do check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.

And just as a reminder: this is a low pressure, fun challenge. If you aren't comfortable doing a particular challenge, then don't. We aren't keeping track of who does what.

I'm Kind.
I'm Creative (kind of obvious if one is involved in fandom and writing original fiction, as well as creating alternate history maps.)
I'm Resilient. Being neurodivergent has never been easy, but others, especially my family, have been supportive. (And my faith has been a big part of that.)

That Freya had remembered what they had looked at while in the Information Science Section the previous week didn’t surprise Alexia. Once Freya had lead them to the area, she found a shelf of the University blueprints that had been published over the last century. “I hope you’re right,” Alexia said, otherwise we still won’t know where we’re going.”

“That may be the case anyway,” Janara said.

“Surely you don’t go blindly into areas in your games?” Alexia asked.

“More times than you’d expect,” Janara said. “Sometimes that’s the point, especially in early stages of Real Time Strategy and Four X games.”

“I’m not familiar with that latter term,” Alexia said.

“Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate,” Freya explained. “The acronym only makes sense in English of course.”

“But it makes for a good mnemonic,” Janara said.

“Of course,” Freya said.

It didn’t take Alexia long to find a promising book. “Here we are,” she said.

“It’s from the turn of the millennium,” Janara commented.

“Not too recent, but also not too old,” Alexia said. “We want to be certain that it contains the information we’re after.”

shewhostaples: View from above of a set of 'scissor' railway points (railway)
[personal profile] shewhostaples
two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

Top 10 challenge

I'm onna train, so here are 10 railway stations I like. In no particular order, and for various different reasons.

1. Frankfurt Hbf. This was where my international rail travels began. Standing on the concourse, looking at the departure boards (getting slightly earwormed by Stuttgart and Fulda), realising that I could get pretty much anywhere from here...

2. London St Pancras. It's beautiful. It's not actually a terribly pleasant experience getting a train from here (maybe the East Midlands and South Eastern platforms are better) but from the outside it's a fairy tale castle.

3. Stockholm. Rolling in, bleary eyed, off the sleeper from Malta, through dingy orange lights, and then suddenly you're in this marble palace. (I got chugged in Stockholm station. I don't know what I was doing to look like a Swede with disposable income rather than a discombobulated tourist, but there we go.)

4. London King's Cross. Never mind all that wizard nonsense, it has a fully functional platform zero. Also the toilets are free these days.

5. Liège Guillemins. Just glorious.

6. Ryde Pier Head. When it's operational and when you don't just miss the train because the catamaran was thirty seconds late. But there's still something fun about a station in the sea.

7. Dawlish. Train to beach in under a minute (your mileage may vary, as may mine considering I haven't been there in about a decade).

8. York. Never mind a pub in the station, it has one on the platform. Lovely stained glass, too.

9. Norwich. Light, gracious, makes you glad you've arrived.

10. Luxembourg. Stained glass again - and just time for an ice cream before the train.

Top 10 Challenge. The category(ies) you choose are up to you. You can give top 10 Fics you read last year, the top 10 songs to create to, the to 10 guest stars on your favorite show, top 10 characters in your favorite book series, top 10... well, you get the idea.

So, I'm in the UK, and last week two of the UK soap operas did a big crossover episode, with viewers getting the chance to vote for one particular scene to be included. So this has inspired me to think, which characters in my favourite fandoms would I want to have a scene together? Here are my top 10 crossover combinations. (If I've ever tackled these, which I have for some of them, I'm also linking the fic.

1: Rumple (Once Upon a Time) and Rowena Macleod (Supernatural)

Because ever since I first saw Rowena, I thought she and Rumple would have a lot of chemistry if they ever met and she is his true soulmate (Belle who?)

2: Mikkel Nielsen (Dark) and Jacob Landry (The Way Home)

Two characters who have found themselves trapped years in the past, they totally need to set up their own support group.

3: Daniel Faraday (Lost) and Walter Bishop (Fringe)

I might have put these two brilliant scientific minds together anyway, but when I made the connection that the psychiatric ward Walter was on happened to be in the same town where Daniel was living before he was recruited to the freighter, what could have made more sense than them having met at St Claire's?

https://archiveofourown.org/works/1039238

4: Olivia Dunham (Fringe) and Kate Austen (Lost)

Kate killed her abusive "stepfather" after finding out he was her biological father. Olivia shot hers, but he escaped. If Kate crossed Olivia's path, could Olivia bring herself to turn her in?

https://archiveofourown.org/works/44889379

5. Jack Shephard (Lost) and Boyd Stevens (From)

Two leaders, two men determined to fix things, these two have had similar struggles. (And the trope of Jack mistaking Boyd for Michael could also have potential.)

6. Jack Shephard (Lost) and August Booth (Once Upon a Time)

This one started out for a crossover exchange where August summoned Jack, a friend he made travelling in Phuket, to try and help break the curse. As I was writing it, I realised these two could bond over trying to meet the expectations of their fathers. (And hey, someone had to fix Stranger in a Strange Land, right?)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/685943

7. Charlie Pace (Lost) and John Mitchell (Being Human UK)

Both have gone through cold turkey, both have been the subject of a death prophecy. They need to bond.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/1250551

8. Lottie Matthews (Yellowjackets) and John Locke (Lost)

Both feeling a connection with the wilderness/jungle, both not wanting to leave - these two have common ground.

9. Dani Acosta (From) and Ana Lucia Cortez (Lost)

Both police officers who make rash decisions in the moment, both end up isolated in the community following an incident of shooting an innocent party believing them to be a villain. Acosta IS Ana Lucia 2:0.

10: Bobby Singer (Supernatural) and Donna Raines (From)

Before becoming trapped in the town, Donna was supposedly on a hunting trip. Ever since seeing some joking somewhere online that it was in fact demon hunting, I've kind of liked the idea of putting her with Bobby.

Scarab

Sarah was not long back from handing off the latest wished away to be assessed by the infirmary. The child was small for his age, exhibited signs of ongoing malnutrition and he had a long list of healed injuries to go with the fresh bruises he was sporting. An older sister had made the wish and, unlike Sarah’s instant regret, she was a budding narcissist who wanted her parents undivided attention.

The summons had interrupted Sarah’s dinner, so once she was done with the handover, she headed to the dining hall. It was between designated meal times, but there were pastries, fruit and cold cuts available at all hours. Sarah filled her plate and, spotting Bishop reading at one of the few occupied tables, she joined him.

“You just came in from Above?” Bishop noted that Sarah was still wearing her Goblin Queen armour.

Sarah snorted and, pulling a pastry apart, popped a small piece into her mouth. “She was a little snot.” She had been called over a toy dispute and had appeared in a child’s bedroom looking suitably regal and terrifying.

What she didn’t expect were the bugs. She’d seen many neglected homes that were crawling with cockroaches, but these were different. They didn’t scuttle as much as amble.

Sarah may not have even noticed them if one hadn’t flown in the open window and the sheer size of the thing nearly broke her composure. Fortunately, one of the goblins, in possession of both a chameleonesque tongue and a taste for bugs, eliminated the problem.

“Do you have any idea what a big scarab that looks like it’s made of bamboo is?” Sarah shuddered at the size of the things. They were large enough walking around, but flying made them seem enormous.

“Sounds like Christmas Beetles, they’re seasonal and harmless,” Bishop answered as he sipped his tea.

Sarah looked up in confusion. “Why would they be called that when beetles are only active in the warmer months?”

Bishop raised an eyebrow. “The wish was in the southern hemisphere, wasn’t it?”

Sarah groaned in annoyance. “Christmas in Summer is so alien.”

“Didn’t you work for NGOs?” Bishop asked.

“Yeah, but I was working in administration. The roles were office based and they were all in the northern hemisphere.” Sarah shrugged. “I’ve been to a lot of places in the southern hemisphere both with Jareth and as Goblin Queen, but they were brief visits. I’ve certainly never experienced the disconnect of a southern Christmas.”

The thought of having a barbecue lunch on a beach for Christmas was equal parts fascinating and disturbing. Sarah’s expectations of a white Christmas did not gel with sand.

The Christmas season always brought a flurry of wishes and when Sarah offered her dreams, the girl couldn’t grab the crystal quickly enough. Alas, she would soon find her dream of being an only child soon shattered by the reality of her parents, so self obsessed they hadn’t noticed their daughter had been torturing her little brother.

Top 10 novels on my shelves I recommend in no particular order.

The Lord of the Rings (The trilogy as an omnibus) JRR Tolkien at his best.
The Hunt for Red October. Tom Clancy hitting the ground running.
Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen holds up.
Great Expectations
Little Dorrit. Both are Charles Dickens near his best.

Ringworld. Larry Niven introducing the concept very successfully.
Master and Commander. Patrick O'Brien started the Aubrey and Maturin series very well.
Treasure Island. Robert Lewis Stevenson. A classic for a reason.
Rebecca. Daphne de Maurier. An excellent example of gothic fiction.
Bridge to Terebithia. Katherine Patterson.

Now and Forever?

I certainly hope not. And yet, when I got up this morning and started to clean the kitchen, I found mouse droppings. Yay. We figure we have to pull out the stove's lower drawer to access the floor and the wall behind it, since we're pretty sure the mice are getting into our place from the outside somewhere in that area.

I'd bet Bob that we'll find no baseboards behind the stove, but it's too obviously a bad bet. We're going to keep an eye on the kitchen counters near the stove for a day or so to see how bold the little buggers are. If it's little to no action, then we'll wait. But if we spot their leavings, then it's time to do the inspection. Which, of course, I'm not looking forward to, especially since we can't really use the foam barrier spray near the stove. Oven heat could end up releasing toxic or potentially toxic fumes, and so we're going to have to buy a whole lot more steel wool. It's going to be a mess.

It is secure because it is from God, not from David's own efforts.

vs 7
God is your Rock or Fortress
