You will discover the mysteries and beauty of pristine nature. You will enjoy a climate suitable for your travels, despite its harshness during certain periods. You will have the immense privilege of being among the distinguished guests of the Tuareg tribes, where you will experience and fully appreciate the generosity of the Blue Man.
Given its invaluable heritage, its immense diversity, and its rare characteristics, the Ahaggar is considered, both in Algeria and worldwide, as one of the greatest natural and archaeological museums. In an effort to protect and preserve this invaluable natural and historical wealth, the Algerian National Office established the Ahaggar National Park, by virtue of a presidential decree promulgated in 1987. The Park Office administration aims at the development, evaluation, and protection of the Ahaggar's natural heritage. At the heart of the Ahaggar, reality is inseparable from imagination. A mountain range breathtaking in its formation, where each mountain is artistically shaped. Unique geological formations, caves that awaken curiosity and challenge knowledge. Antiquities, objects of great value, rock sculptures and engravings, a magical natural heritage consisting of hundreds of plant and animal categories. Fountains, water springs, and inexhaustible channels.
Are you passionate about high mountain peaks and dizzyingly high altitudes? The superb and incomparable Assekrem Mountain will surely satisfy your thirst as an unrepentant mountaineer or an unconditional lover of unique mountains. It is located approximately 80 km from the wilaya's headquarters and at an altitude of around 2,800 m above sea level. It will offer you wonderful and splendid panoramic landscapes over the vast Atakor plateau, where you can leisurely admire the immense volcanic vent of Ahren (Ras Labirine).
The Sahara is not merely a desert expanse. Water, the main source of life, stored abundantly within its rocks, eventually gushed out. It gave rise to several water points:
The Mineral Spring
The Assekrem will reward you with the most beautiful sunrise and sunset in the world, according to global tourism classification. Do not miss these moments imbued with great tranquility and intense emotions. The gentle mountain breezes will touch the depths of your soul.
Among the famous monuments of the Assekrem is the monastery of the French monk Charles de Foucauld, which he built in 1910, where he lived. There, he compiled a dictionary related to oral culture, memoirs, and his manuscripts. From its heights, you can also admire the fascinating and stunning landscapes surrounding this monastery.
On the western flank of the Assekrem stands Mount Ilmane (2,760 m). It consists of a conical belt, a section of which is oriented towards the sky. North of this site is Mount Tahat Atakor, which reaches an altitude of over 3,003 m. In addition to these, there are Mounts Akar-Akar and Adrien. You will certainly be dazzled by these astonishing rock and mountain formations. Above all! Remember to hold your breath during this ecstatic moment.
The Ahaggar is referred to by archaeologists as the Geological Eden. It features rock sculptures and engravings characterized by a marvelous form where red clay color and white dyes predominate. These vestiges trace the eras of the Sahara's transformation during the Neolithic period, the prehistoric period, and the drought period. The engravings depict several activities: grazing cows, hunting terrestrial animals
and extinct animals (wild cows, elephants, rhinoceroses, and giraffes). Men in combat, rivers and meadows, and religious ceremonies. You will be initiated into deciphering several enigmas inscribed on these murals, despite the fact that some of them remain ambiguous and mysterious!!

The Mausoleum of Tin Hinan is located within the commune of Abalessa (80 km north of the wilaya). According to the artifacts found near the structure, such as jewelry and utensils related to funerary rites, its history dates back to the 4th and 5th centuries AD. This mausoleum was discovered following excavations carried out by the French and Americans in 1925. The supposed remains of Tin Hinan are currently housed at the Bardo Museum in Algiers.
The Ksour and casbahs represent the main characteristic of urbanization in the Ahaggar. This essential feature is reflected in a Saharan architectural style built using traditional local materials. The most famous include: Ksar Ag Amstan in the city of Tamanrasset, Sourou Tazrouk, which overlooks the Tazrouk Wadi, the Casbah of Silet in the commune of Abalessa (140 km to the west), and the Tit Casbah (40 km).
Within the Ahaggar Park, archaeological sites attest to human existence from the Old Stone Age to the Modern Stone Age. These locations are characterized by a proliferation of funerary sites built from stone and gravel, treated on both sides, in the Ideles region. Fragments of stones used in certain industries, hunting, agriculture, and pottery are also found, particularly in the Amekni region and other areas.
Upon arrival in the Ahaggar, the first impression is the impossibility of identifying and describing the surrounding elements, leading one to believe they are on another planet: indescribable plains, plateaus and difficult-to-access paths, mysterious caves, unparalleled mountains, finely sculpted rocks, wadis and springs generating water in abundance, golden dunes attempting to embrace the purity of the sky, magnificent orchards. Hamadas, ergs, hundreds of plant categories with vibrant and flamboyant colors, subtle and delicious aromas released by gum trees, acacia, and oleanders. Diverse animals: gazelles, cheetahs, mouflons, lizards, fennecs, camels, reptiles, birds, and fish. One only needs to possess a spirit of curiosity to discover all this in the company of an experienced and professional tourist guide.
