The conversation around in-ovo sexing is changing. Not long ago, the focus was on whether these technologies could work at commercial scale. Today, the conversation is increasingly about how quickly they can be adopted. That's one of the reasons we're so happy to see AgFunder News covering the growing momentum behind MRI-based in-ovo sexing and what it means for the U.S. poultry industry. As producers, retailers, and consumers continue pushing toward higher animal welfare standards, the industry needs solutions that are not only scientifically validated, but operationally proven and capable of meeting commercial demand. As a fruit producer, you can inspect fruit from the outside all day long.  What it really looks like inside though (e.g. if there’s browning, a hollow core, or other defects) goes unseen until the shipment gets rejected. So how deep do you need to see? This question decides which quality control technology belongs on your line.  Ben Danzer, one of Orbem's MRI scientists, compared available technologies, including Orbem’s AI-powered MRI. He assessed their primary use case, how far they see into the fruit, the spatial resolution they deliver, and how hard they are to integrate into an existing production line.  The blog article he wrote details where each technology earns its place and where it falls short. Last week, the EU Commission committed to revising animal welfare rules for laying hens and broilers by the end of 2026, to end male chick culling across the EU. Hatcheries are already installing the technology that makes this possible. And it's proven at scale. Our Genus Focus for non-invasive in-ovo sexing is live in 5 European countries. This is one part of the Commission's new Livestock Strategy, a plan to protect Europe's food security and cut import dependence across a sector that employs 7 million people and turns over €400 billion a year. Another part that matters just as much for poultry is: the promise to simplify the rules around circular bioeconomy and biomass valorization. Every year, up to 10 billion unfertilized eggs go into incubators worldwide and take up space while producing nothing. The Genus Scale sorts fertilized from unfertilized eggs before incubation begins. The unfertilized ones can be sold as table eggs. An egg that would have been binned becomes an egg someone can eat. On Tuesday, we celebrated the third edition of our Empowered Lab - an initiative created to empower, support, and connect the women at Orbem. This time, Karla Mieses spoke about the invisible beliefs women inherit - the stories that shape what we believe we can be, ask for, and deserve. She invited us to question what holds us back and ask: What could change if we chose to believe differently? This is a safe space where we were able to share our experiences and reflect on the invisible beliefs we all carry. We supported each other, shared our stories, and talked about how we have learned to navigate these challenges.
